Cortisone Steroids and Osteoporosis

Saturday, 9 May 2026

Long-term treatment of rheumatic illnesses like arthritis using cortisone (a type of glucocorticoids) can cause osteoporosis. Cortisone is a steroid hormone and reduces allergic-like reactions. According to the German Society for Rheumatology (DGRh), as a preventive measure, you should accompany it with calcium and vitamin D

What is a good source of calcium and vitamin D?

Yung Kien Bee Pollen
. Because it is Natural, there is no Preservatives, it doesn't contain Antibiotics and it is Complete with Enzymes and Coenzymes which aids in better digestion and absorption of the calcium and vitamin D.

Click on this link to find out what other types of vitamins and minerals are in a grain of pollen:

http://www.pingofhealth.com/2012/07/what-is-deal-with-bee-pollen.html

Experts say cortisone drugs are usually well tolerated when used for short periods. But if used for more than 3 months, there may be side effects like decrease in bone density, which lead to osteoporosis. In 30-40% of patients treated with cortisone over a period of 4.5 years, recent or older bone fractures could be detected, DGRh estimates.

The problem is that many patients don't notice the small bone fractures precisely because of the medicine they are taking. Therefore, the bone problems are frequently overlooked and not treated. As a result, the skeleton becomes more fragile, thus promoting further fractures. In the first 3-6 months of glucocorticoid therapy, bone density decreases by up to 12%.

After the end of treatment, the fracture risk declines again, as it is directly related to cortisone intake. Therefore, DGRh recommends taking as much cortisone as necessary, but as little as possible, in combination with preventive measures against possible bone loss.

In other words, a rheumatoid arthritis patient is faced with a serious challenge - they take cortisone to treat their arthritis. But long-term consumption may lead to brittle bones and osteoporosis.

What is a preferred alternative to cortisone?

Yung Kien Ganoderma. Because research found that Ganoderma possess immune-modulating and anti-allergic capabilities and can inhibit the development of chronic inflammation like rheumatoid arthritis. Ganoderma Research: Combined effects of Lingzhi and Gefitinib (Iressa) improves Lung Cancer

Sunday, 7 April 2024

This article is sourced and translated from Ganoderma Magazine (Issue 88). It is a report of a scientific study concluding that the combined therapy of Lingzhi triterpenoids and Gefitinib (sold under the brand name Iressa) improves lung cancer and reduces toxicity.

Lung cancer ranks among the most common primary cancer worldwide and is a leading cause of deaths amongst men and second amongst women.

There are 2 types of lung cancer:

(i) Small cell lung cancer

(ii) Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Advances in medical discoveries and technologies have improved the therapeutic methods for lung cancer. Gefitinib (trade name: Iressa) is a targeted drug commonly used to treat late-stage metastasis NSCLC and other cancer, like breast cancer. However, after 10 to 16 months of therapy, patients normally develop resistance to the drug thereby frustrating the treatment process.

Therefore, seizing the effective curative period of Gefitinib is crucial to the control of the metastatic cancer cells. At the same time, reducing the side effects of the drugs would enable the patients to be in a better state to fight the illness and reverse the situation. A joint study by the Dept of Oncology, Yantai Hospital of TCM and School of Medicine, Tibet University, found that the combination of Lingzhi triterpenoid and Gefitinib therapy increases efficacy and reduces toxicity. The study, which was headed by Wei Liu, is titled Ganoderma Triterpenoids attenuate tumour angiogenesis in lung cancer tumour-bearing nude mice, and was published in Pharmaceutical Biology in 2020.

The Experiment

Human lung cancer cells (A549) were cultured and then injected into immune-deficient mice (BALB/c). When the tumor grew to around 6-8 mm in diameter, the mice were randomly divided into 4 groups and administered for 14 days in the following manner:

(i) Saline group (control) - intragastric injection with saline daily.

(ii) GLT group - intragastric injection with Lingzhi triterpenoids (1g/kg daily).

(iii) GEF group - intraperitoneal injection with gefitinib (15mg/kg daily).

(iv) GLT + GEF group - combination of (ii) and (iii).

The mice were sacrificed and analysed on the 15th day.

The Results

It was found that the tumor volume of GLT, GEF and GLT+GEF groups were significantly lower than the Saline (Control) group. The inhibition rates of the tumors were GLT 37%, GEF 43% and GLT+GEF 52%. This suggested that although GLT and GEF may inhibit the rate of tumor growth individually, the combined effect is higher. The inhibition was due to the accelerated apoptosis of cancer cells and at the same time inhibiting tumor angiogenesis.

What is Angiogenesis?

Angiogenesis is the process through which new blood vessels grow from existing blood vessels. In order to survive, tumors need to continuously grow new blood vessels to link to existing blood vessels for oxygen and nutrients. This also explains how cancer cells tend to spread (metastasize) to the surrounding tissues and other parts of the body. Therefore, the density of micro-vessels (microvascular) in the tumor tissues will be key to the continuous growth of tumors.

The study made a histological (immunohistochemical) analysis of the tumor tissues of the various group. Quantifying the analysis showed that GLT and GEF groups had lower microvascular density (MVD) than the control group, indicating inhibition of tumor angiogenesis. However, the efficacy was much better when GLT was combined with GEF.

The Side Effects

The mice were weighed on the 1st, 8th and 15th day of the study. The results showed, after the 8th day, the weight of:

- The GEF group dropped significantly.

- The GLT group was stable.

- The GLT+GEF group maintained closer to that of normal healthy mice.

This indicated that the combined therapy of GLT+GEF reduces the side effects of GEF as weight is normally an indicator of well being.

In their observation of the mice, the study found that:

- The GEF group showed signs of agitation and drowsiness, reduced physical activity, decreased feeding and dull skin colour. This could be due to the effects of administrating GEF.

- The GLT+GEF group showed no obvious agitation and drowsiness, accessed water and food without difficulty, and exhibited improved skin color compared to the GEF group.

The results indicated that GLT played a role in alleviating the effects caused by GEF.

Conclusion

The study showed that Lingzhi triterpenoids do not affect the efficacy of Gefitinib but enhanced it.

Note: The study did not dwell into the details of the Lingzhi triterpenoids being used and what was the effective content. The dosage of 1g/kg used in the study was high, but one should note that the study is for a short duration and the researchers would like to know the results within a short span of time. A reasonable dosage is necessary for Lingzhi to take effect in this kind of situation

Ganoderma Research: Lingzhi Reduces Risks of Obesity Complications in High Fat Diet

Saturday, 7 October 2023

This article is translated from Ganoderma Magazine Issue 89. It is a report of a scientific study concluding that Lingzhi / Ganoderma promotes metabolism and reduces the risks of obesity complications in high fat diet.

Obesity is a metabolic disease associated with excess fat deposit that can increase the adipose tissues (fats) mass by increasing the number and enlargement of adipocytes (fat cells). Enlargement of fat cells causes dysregulation in hormone signaling and increases the secretion of inflammatory cytokines, leading to insulin resistance and chronic low-grade inflammation. As obesity disrupts metabolism, it is a major risk factor for multiple metabolic disorders, such as Type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis (thickening and hardening of arteries), fatty liver and cancer. Many therapeutic methods have been developed to inhibit obesity and some researchers are targeting the potential of AMPK signaling pathway.

Lingzhi has been used for centuries to improve health and longevity, and to treat diseases like hypertension, diabetes and cancer.

Researchers from Korea's Chungbuk National University and the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Studies verified researches on Lingzhi's anti-obesity effects and its prevention of metabolic diseases via the AMPK Pathway. The study, which was headed by Hyeon A. Lee, is titled Ganoderma lucidum extract reduces insulin resistance by enhancing AMPK activation in high-fat diet-induced obese mice, and was published in the Nov 2020 issue of Nutrients.

What is AMPK Pathway?

AMPK (5' AMP-activated protein kinase) is an enzyme that plays a role in regulating energy metabolism. AMPK activation will set off downstream enzymes that:

(a) Increases glucose uptake and utilization, fatty acid oxidation and autophagy (breakdown and cleaning out of damaged body cells).
(b) Decreases the synthesis of glycogen (glucose storage), fatty acid, protein and cholesterol (in general, lipid metabolism).

AMPK can be activated through exercise, by liver enzyme LKB1 (liver kinase B1) and adipose tissues.

The Experiment

Lingzhi extracts (GEP), containing 53% triterpenoids and 27% polysaccharides, were used in the experiment. Young C57BL/6 mice were divided into 5 groups and fed (ad libitum) as follows:

(i) ND (Normal Diet) group fed with normal diet containing 10% fat.
(ii) HFD (High Fat Diet) group fed with high fat diet containing 45% fat.
(iii) HFD + 1% - group fed as (ii) but contains 1% Lingzhi extract.
(iv) HFD + 3% - group fed as (ii) but contains 3% Lingzhi extract.
(v) HFD + 5% - group fed as (ii) but contains 5% Lingzhi extract.

Duration of experiment was 12 weeks.
Food intake was measured every other day.
The mice were weighed once a week.

The Results

As expected HFD increased the final size and weight of the mice, which was also displayed in their appearance. However, the final increase in size and weight of the Lingzhi group were much lower, indicating that Lingzhi may have played a role in suppressing the increase in weight.

Further analysis of the data showed that:

Left diagram: HFD increased weight gain but was suppressed by GEP (Lingzhi).
Mid diagram: Food intake was constant amongst groups, indicating that the effect of GEP (Lingzhi) on weight gain may be attributed to metabolic changes.
Right diagram: The feeding efficiency ratio (body weight gain / food intake) suggested that GEP (Lingzhi) treatment reduced the body mass gained per calorie eaten.

Compared to ND, HFD increased the weight of liver and epididymal white adipose tissues (WAT) (these are obesity parameters), whereas GEP (Lingzhi) reduced these weight gain.

A = Liver cells.
B = WAT (white adipose tissues).

There was greater fat accumulation in both A and B for mice consuming HFD than ND.
But with GEP (Lingzhi) supplementation, the accumulation were lesser and the size of adipocytes smaller, especially in the 3% and 5% group.

HFD increased all parameters on obesity that were analyzed, but with GEP (Lingzhi), they were reduced, suggesting that GEP is able to reduce the higher concentration of cholesterol and lipid in the blood from the HFD.

HFD increased glucose and insulin levels compared to ND, but GEP (Lingzhi) significantly reduced their levels, especially insulin, suggesting better utilization of glucose.

The Mechanism of Action

Without any change in the amount of high fat food intake, why was GEP (Lingzhi) able to reduce fat accumulation and the possible risks of complications from the resulting obesity?

The researchers analysed the liver tissues and WAT of the mice and found that the enzymes responsible for regulating energy (AMPK) were greatly increased in both tissues of the mice fed with GEP (Lingzhi). AMPK activation reduces the enzymes responsible for lipogenesis (formation of fat) and thus inhibiting fat formation and the resulting obesity.

When fatty tissues declined, the hormones responsible for reducing insulin sensitivity declined, resulting in increasing insulin sensitivity for the GEP (Lingzhi) group and increases glucose utilisation.

Conclusion

The study showed that Lingzhi supplementation can prevent obesity and insulin resistance by enhancing lipid metabolism. Lingzhi helps to increase the utilisation of glucose from excess calories consumed and not store it, thereby reducing the risks of obesity and its related complications. Lingzhi, by being able to activate AMPK, is similar to Metformin (the drug commonly used to lower blood glucose), where part of the mechanism works through the same pathway.

** In other words, with regular Lingzhi supplement, we can enjoy our food and not worry too much that it will make us fat.**

Exclusive: Lingzhi helps modulate and balance 3 major systems

Sunday, 9 April 2023

In March 2023, Ms Yu-Chi Cheng presented on how Lingzhi helps modulate and balance the 3 major systems in our body, namely the Immune system (免疫系统), Hormonal system (荷尔蒙系统) and Nervous system (神经系统).

Below are the credentials of this highly qualified lady, Ms Yu-Chi Cheng.

  • Senior Assistant to Double Crane Group CEO
  • Head of Dietitian of Double Crane Group
  • China Medical University Department of Nutrition, Taiwan
  • Master of Science, Taipei Medical University, School of Nutrition and Health Sciences
  • Specialist Dietitian of Renal Nutrition Obesity Dietitian
  • Professional Health Food Engineer
  • Senior Professional and Technical Certified Dietitian.
As we gradually return back to life post-pandemic, people tend to pay more attention to taking care of their health. That's why Ms Cheng finds it timely to share with us how Lingzhi helps modulate and balance (调节平衡) the health of the 3 major physical systems in our body, namely the Immune, Hormonal and Nervous systems (3 Systems).

Why emphasise on these 3 Systems?

1) Any disorders in the 3 Systems will affect the overall functions of the body organs. The 3 Systems coordinate with each other so when 1 of them is imbalanced, then like a domino effect, the other 2 will become chaotic.

2) It is hard for the body to modulate and balance the 3 Systems. The mechanism of medicine in alleviating an illness is by way of suppressing over-reactions or boosting insufficient physical condition unilaterally. After taking medicine for a period of time, the side effects of medicine will start appearing and patients get weaker.

3) By understanding how the 3 Systems work together, you will know how they affect your entire body. Then you can comprehend why taking Lingzhi regularly, and at a fixed dosage and fixed time everyday will help you maintain your health. This is proven by numerous scientific evidences which support the Chinese ancestors' saying i.e. Treat Different Diseases with the Same Treatment (异病同治). Reason being different diseases can be cured using the same Core Method (target root cause (根本) instead of symptomatic treatment (对症治疗)).

Ms Cheng then proceeded to explain in a clear and easy-to-understand manner each of the 3 Systems, what are the symptoms and what are the common diseases associated when there is excess or deficiency, over-reaction or repressed performance. She also used the analogy of an Iceberg - we are usually treated on the 10% of the problems that we can see. But the issues can only be fully resolved when we become aware of the 90% that is hidden. This was how she found a solution to her dry eyes problem.

She also highlights various professors' and experts' perspectives, wherein their scientific research results are published in Taiwan's Ganoderma Magazine, which demonstrates clearly that Lingzhi can be effectively used to handle diseases stemming from all the 3 Systems.

Finally she recommended the ideal combination of Lingzhi to take, regardless whether you want to maintain your health or trying to improve your health problems.

Sunday, 30 October 2022

This article is sourced from a talk by Taiwan nutritionist Ms Yu-Chi Cheng, in conjunction with the launch of Yung Kien C Ganoderma Tablet (YKC) in Malaysia in July 2022.

Shuang Hor has a series of products called Target Lingzhi, 4 of which were launched in Malaysia and Singapore since 2020:

(i) Yung Kien B which is mainly for Bones.

(iv) Yung Kien I which is mainly for Immune.

Click here for details: http://www.pingofhealth.com/2020/05/exclusive-target-lingzhi-yki-immune.html

In July 2022, Shuang Hor launched the most cutting-edge product of the series, YKC, which is designed for cancer diseases.

This article focuses on the technical proof of how YKC complements conventional cancer treatments and how YKC protects the brain neurons.

Background - Process Flow of Basic Lingzhi

Prior to the launch of Target Lingzhi, Shuang Hor has in its stable a series of products called Basic Lingzhi, which are produced using Lingzhi fruit bodies. The fruit bodies are harvested and then put through these processes in the factory:

- Drying - Crushing - Extraction - Concentration

- Purification (for Yung Kien Ganoderma 2)

- Rapid vacuum freeze-drying - Capsuling and packaging.

From this process, Shuang Hor is already able to obtain many active constituents, including over 300 types of ganoderic acids (under the umbrella of Triterpenoids) and over 100 types of high-molecular Polysaccharides. The Basic Lingzhi is already able to do an excellent job to protect our health.

Process Flow of Target Lingzhi

Now, Target Lingzhi is even more advanced, as compared to Basic Lingzhi.

Target Lingzhi is also produced using Lingzhi fruit bodies; but the breakthrough of the process is the addition of another component done using a technique called mycelium fermentation. This gives Target Lingzhi a higher concentration and purification of Ganoderic Acid.

In the past, only Polysaccharide could be extracted from mycelium. It is only with this fermentation technique that Shuang Hor is now able to extract a high concentration of Ganoderic Acid (a sub-constituent of Triterpenoid).

So, the processes in the factory are slightly different:

- Fruit body plus mycelium fermentation

- Drying - Extraction - Concentration

- Separation and Purification

- Rapid vacuum freeze-drying - Packaging.

In other words, Shuang Hor is able to produce this high efficacy product to be used as supplementary treatment for cancer due to:

(a) the technique of doing mycelium fermentation.

(b) the technology of obtaining high quantity of anti-cancer substances through a concentration and purification process to get Ganoderic acid T, S and Ganodermic acid S. If you refer to technical papers in PubMed, you will know these components are very important in cancer treatments.

What is the Difference in the quantity of Ganoderic Acid in Basic Lingzhi as compared to YKC?

(a) Basic Lingzhi products contain about 1% Ganoderic Acid T + 99% other active components.

(b) YKC contains 95-98% Ganoderic Acid T + up to 5% other active components.

In other words,

(i) The high concentration and purification process results in YKC having higher quantity of active constituents targeted for cancer treatment.

(ii) Cancer patients only need to consume a smaller dose but achieve greater efficacy and better results.

Functions of YKC

1. YKC is used for cancer treatment:

> Effective against all kinds of cancer.

> Taken together with chemo treatments to ease the side effects.

> Facilitates the effectiveness of medication.

2. YKC modulates and balances brain neurons which helps people to have better sleep.

3. YKC is effective for brain diseases. This is achievable because the ganoderic acid have very small molecular structure which can pass through the Blood Brain Barrier (BBB), into the brain tissues.

What is Blood Brain Barrier (BBB)?

Our body can be easily infected by bacteria or virus. But because of the importance of our brain, there is a special system called BBB that shields the brain from harmful substances in the blood. Thus, the bacteria and virus are filtered by BBB from affecting the brain cells. The is a very good function, but unfortunately, it also prevents drugs from entering the brain. That's why certain chemo treatments are not effective to treat brain cancer.

The good news is, as the molecules of YKC's ganoderic acid are very small, they are able to pass through the BBB and have a good effect on brain diseases.

How Cancer Starts, Grows and Spreads

Cancer cells are mutation of normal body cells. After mutation, our body can't control them anymore. They multiply haphazardly, up to the stage where they affect our major organs, form tumours and kill us.

Stage 1 - A normal cell mutates into a cancer cell. It develops rapidly and grows into our body tissues. Eg. if we talk about lung cancer, it's the lung tissues. If we talk about gastric cancer, it's the stomach tissues. Prostate cancer starts in the prostate tissues.

Stage 2 - To grow faster, the cancer cells start to grow new blood vessels, so that they can get nutrients from nearby cells and grow bigger. The cancer cells are still contained in the same area but take up more space now.

Stage 3 - When the cancer cells grow even more, the next step is to migrate and invade nearby body organs. They do this via the lymphatic system - finding then getting onto the "highway". Eg. breast cancer cells would move to nearby lymph nodes (under the armpits) in order to move to other parts of the body.

Stage 4 - Once the cancer cells get onto the highway (blood or lymphatic system), they can easily spread to nearby organs or organs further from the origin (metastasis). Eg. a breast cancer can go to the lymph nodes and then spread up to the brain or down to the bones.

YKC is a Multi-Target Treatment, meaning it works on all 4 stages of cancer. Below are the results of the experiments conducted by Trineo Biotech Lab in Taiwan, which is a GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) certified lab.

Common Misconceptions on Psoriasis and Treatment Options

Sunday, 18 September 2022

Psoriasis is a skin condition that causes red, crusty patches of skin covered with silvery scales called plaques to appear on one's body. It is caused by dysfunction of the immune system. When the immune system becomes overactive, it speeds up skin cell growth. Normal skin cells completely grow and shed in a month, but this process is accelerated with psoriasis and takes just 3 or 4 days. And instead of shedding, the skin cells pile up.

Compared with other types of rashes like eczema, the colour and scales of psoriasis are different. The classic symptoms are a rash that is usually salmon pink in colour and well-demarcated, and patches of skin that are thickened and have silvery scales. Common affected sites are the elbows, knees, belly button, scalp, nails and joints.

Some Common Misconceptions

(a) Psoriasis is infectious. In fact, it is a wrong perception.

(b) Psoriasis is only skin deep. In reality, psoriasis sufferers have a higher risk of developing conditions like diabetes, stroke and heart disease.

(c) There is dietary restrictions, but that is not the case, except for alcohol. However, psoriasis is strongly associated with metabolic syndrome, which includes obesity, cholesterol, diabetes and hypertension. And when there is increased risk of these illnesses, your diet would naturally have to take into account these issues.

(d) Seafood or beef is bad for the skin. On the contrary, that is not true.

Remember TIMES to help you narrow down what could be causing your condition to flare up:

> T for trauma - injury to your skin eg. a cut, scrape, insect bite or sunburn.

> I for infection.

> M for medication eg. beta blockers.

> E for endocrine - high or low thyroid levels can worsen psoriasis.

> S for stress, smoke and spirits.

Medical Treatment

To-date, doctors have not found any cure for psoriasis. Medications can control the condition, but beware of the side effects:

(a) Topical treatment like steroid creams can be very strong and cause permanent thinning of the skin.

(b) Phototherapy ie exposing patients to controlled but consistent doses of UV light under a dermatologist's care. However, it can be logistically inconvenient.

(c) Systemic treatment, where steroids are ingested orally or through injections, may cause obesity.

Methotrexate may damage the liver and cause white blood cells to drop.

Cyclosporine may damage the kidney and affect blood pressure.

(d) Biologics is relatively new and may offer an effective treatment in future. However, it is expensive and the long-term side effects are still unclear.

Antibiotic Resistance - A Serious Danger

Sunday, 20 December 2020

The germ theory of diseases links bacteria to the causation of diseases. As a result, scientists started to search for drugs that would kill these bacteria. In 1942, the term "antibiotic" was first used and now, antibiotics means any medication that kills bacteria or inhibits their growth.

Antibiotic resistance refers to the ability of bacteria to resist the effects of medication that could once successfully treat them. It is one of the biggest threat to global health, food security and economic development.

Resistant bacteria:
- are more difficult to treat as the antibiotics become less effective.
- require alternative medication.
- require higher doses of antibiotics.

As a result, treatments can become:
- more expensive with longer hospital stay and higher medical costs
- more toxic with increased rates of death.

What cause antibiotic resistance?

(a) Lack of target

Antibiotics normally bind onto specific proteins on the bacteria's cell wall. Some bacteria have no cell wall, giving the antibiotic no place to latch onto and rendering it useless. This gives these bacteria an innate resistance to penicillin.

(b) Lack of entry

After binding to the cell wall proteins, the antibiotic normally enters the bacterial cells via porin channels in the cell wall. The loss of these specific porin channels or the creation of new porin channels in the bacterial cell wall block antibiotics from entering the cells.

(c) Blocked entry or increased excretion

This means that the drug is either blocked from entering the cell or there is a mechanism that caused the drug to be excreted from the cell too quickly to be of much use.

(d) Enzyme inactivation

Certain enzymes can either destroy antibiotics or prevent them from binding to target sites.

(e) Altered target

The specific binding proteins on the bacterial cell surface can be altered due to genetic mutations as the cells replicate, resulting in the antibiotic being unable to bind to them anymore.

(f) Alternative pathway

An alternative pathway that bypasses the reaction inhibited by the antibiotic allows for the bacteria to avoid the antibiotic's harmful effect.

(g) Genetic mutations

This refers to the random change in the DNA structure of genes, which occurs at a frequency of 1 per 10 million cells. Mutations can randomly confer the ability to resist antibiotics on bacteria through a few methods, including those listed above.

The Human Factor

We humans also promote antibiotic resistance through various ways:

(a) Patients

- Forgetting to take medication.
- Stopping medication when they begin to feel better.
- Unable to afford the full course of medication.
- Misuse of antibiotics.
- Self-medication, which may be unnecessary or taken in the wrong doses.

(b) Doctors

- Overprescribing broad spectrum drugs when a narrow spectrum drug is appropriate.
- Prescribing wrongly.
- Prescribing unnecessarily.
- Inadequate surveillance and susceptibility testing, leading to use of broad-spectrum drugs, rather than a narrow spectrum now.

(c) Hospitals

- Poor infection control practices e.g. inadequate hand washing, not changing gloves between patients etc.

(d) Antibiotics

- Using expired or counterfeit antibiotics.
- Lack of quality compliance and monitoring.

(e) Animal use

- Used for growth and disease control in poultry, cattle, pigs etc. Humans are indirectly taking these antibiotics when eating the meat.

(f) Overcrowding

- Residents of developing countries often carry antibiotic-resistant faecal commensal organisms due to close living quarters.
- Visitors to developing countries passively acquire antibiotic-resistant E. coli.

(Source: A major threat by Assoc Prof Dr Mohammad Nazmul Hasan Maziz, Starhealth, 1 Dec 2019)

As you can see above, it is so easy for antibiotic-resistance to happen. There are too many uncontrollable factors. Even if we do everything we can, there's nothing we can do when the bacteria mutate.

This means that taking antibiotics for long-term is Not a sustainable solution.
How can you boost up your immune system then? Is there anything that can replace antibiotics?

A Better Solution

Have you heard of Lingzhi / Ganoderma?

Shen Nong's Herbal Classic identifies it as a  top superior herb, that if consumed for an extended period of time may lighten the body, prevent ageing and thus sublimate to Godly longevity.

"Let Food by thy Medicine, and Medicine be thy Food" - Hippocrates.
Lingzhi falls in the overlapping section between food and medicine.

Lingzhi performs many Functions, including:

- Protect our liver
- Regulate our immune system
- Cleanse and detoxify our blood
- Promote regeneration of cells and metabolism
- Prevent the occurrence of diseases
- Delay ageing.

This means that Lingzhi is able strengthen your immune soldiers so they are capable of fighting the bacteria and virus. When you are attacked by bacteria, take Lingzhi instead of antibiotics. That is what I have been doing over the last 12 years. I have never taken any antibiotic for 12 years. Whenever I fall sick, I just take high dose of Shuang Hor Lingzhi. My problem is solved.

Exclusive: Statins: How They Work on Cholesterol and Side Effects

Sunday, 9 June 2019

About 75-80% of the cholesterol in our body is produced by our own liver. Only 20-25% come from our food intake. The liver also produces triglycerides. If these readings are high, doctors will prescribe medicine. But if having high cholesterol level is such a bad thing, why does your body produce it in the first place?

Why does your liver produce so much cholesterol?

Because cholesterol is needed for many important functions in our body.

(i) It is an important building block for body tissues and cell membranes. It helps form the outer layer of cells.

(ii) It is needed to synthesise vitamin D. We need cholesterol in our skin cells to make vitamin D from sunlight. If you don't have sufficient vitamin D, the calcium consumed will not be absorbed and utilised by the body. Calcium may also become calcified, and arteries around the heart will be hardened.

(iii) It is needed for endocrine system (hormone production system). The ingredient to manufacture hormones is cholesterol. Imbalance of oestrogen and progesterone can cause cysts, fibroids and endometriosis. Cortisol hormones are produced by adrenal glands when one is stressed, to help relieve the stress. But over-production of cortisol create disruption to body eg. increased blood sugar level and digestive problems.

(iv) It is needed for nervous system. The brain stores up to 20% of total body cholesterol because it's needed to transmit messages. If you don't have sufficient cholesterol, the message transmission process slows down, leading to Alzheimer and Parkinson disease. Excess cholesterol blocks blood vessels and can increase the risk of stroke.

Exclusive: Anti-Diabetic Drugs: How They Work & Side Effects

Sunday, 2 June 2019

Many of us obediently swallow whatever medications that doctors prescribe - some do it out of ignorance and some out of great faith in their doctors. Most times, doctors do not explain the mechanisms behind the drugs they prescribe nor give solutions on how to prevent the side effects that always come with long-term consumption of medication.

In this post, we learn about drugs taken to treat high blood sugar problem. We learn how the drugs work, what are the categories, what are the mechanisms and what are the side effects.

The red blood cells in our body carry oxygen and nutrients to the whole body, including glucose, which is a source of energy. Carbohydrates are converted into glucose, which then flow in the bloodstream. Glucose needs to enter the RBC first before it can be utilised. For glucose to enter body cells, it needs a key, which is the insulin hormone produced by pancreas.

If the pancreas cannot produce sufficient insulin, there will be excessive glucose flowing in the bloodstream, resulting in high blood sugar reading. When the cells cannot receive glucose, they will starve.

Another reason for high blood sugar is the RBC receptor is not functioning well; it cannot recognise the insulin to open the door to welcome glucose to enter.

The normal fasting blood glucose level should not exceed 5.6 mmol/L.
Pre-diabetes level is in the range of 5.6 - 6.9 mmol/L.
A person is confirmed to be a diabetic if he has a reading in excess of 7 mmol/L.

Diabetes Complications

Diabetes itself is not life-threatening. It's the complications of high blood sugar that can be fatal.

1) Blindness
High blood sugar damages the retina and in the long run, can lead to blindness.

2) Dialysis / Kidney Failure
Excessive sugar in the blood over burdens the kidney.
Diabetics need the help of a machine to cleanse their blood because their kidney can no longer perform this function. When your eGFR reading is less than 15 mL/min/1.73m2, it means your kidney function has deteriorated substantially and doctors will advise you to do dialysis.

3) Liver Failure
Excessive sugar attracts a lot of bad bacteria. The liver has to work harder to perform the detox function and in the long-term, it becomes damaged.

4) Heart failure
When your blood is full of glucose, it would be very sticky and muddy. Your heart has to work extra hard to pump such blood and will lose its strength and ability in the long term.

5) Gangrene / Amputation
You can tell a lot about how healthy you are by looking at the condition of your legs. If your legs are strong, you can walk at a fast pace, there is no pain, your feet feel warm (good blood circulation) and you are able to stand for long periods without feeling tired - you are healthy and your kidney is healthy.

The blood of diabetic patients is very dirty. The feet are the furthest points from the heart. It is harder for the heart to pump blood to such a distance. As blood cannot reach there, their feet always feel cold. Less blood also means there are less RBCs and WBCs circulating there. When the virus / bacteria attack the cells and tissues in your feet, there would be fewer soldiers to fight them. As such, the infections are harder to heal. The wounds grow bigger when there are more and more virus / bacteria accumulating in the area, resulting in gangrene and eventually amputation.

Exclusive: Brain and Nervous System - Pain, Painkillers & Sleeping Pills

Sunday, 28 April 2019

The human brain contains more than 100 billion nerve cells (called neurons). These neurons receive electro-chemical impulses from everywhere in the body, interpret the impulses and then send the relevant signals back to various glands and muscles.

From the brain is attached the brain stem and the spinal cord, all of which make up the central nervous system. The spinal cord is cushioned by the cerebrospinal fluid in the centre of the bones of the spine.

From the Central Nervous System, the signals are transmitted to the Peripheral Nervous System, which comprise:

(a) Skin and muscle (eg. feel itchiness from mosquito bites, feel pain)
(b) Head, brain, eyes, ears, nose and tastebuds (eg. migraine)
(c) Automatic nervous system, which controls the unconscious body functions (eg. breathing, digestion, glandular activities such as insulin production, T3, T4 production).

Cause of Pain

Pain is caused when there is damage to the tissues due to injury or infection. It leads to a chemical reaction, which produces prostaglandins (which is a hormone-like substance released by damaged cells).

Prostaglandins act on the nerve endings so that the signal is passed along a series of nerve cells to the brain where the signal is interpreted as pain by the brain cells. This is a chemical reaction. The source of the pain will transmit the pain through the nerve cells (neurons), to the spinal cord, which pass the pain to the brainstem, which highlights to our conscious mind which area of the body is injured, damaged, wounded or infected.

With this knowledge, we can now understand better how painkillers work to subside the pain.

Drugs for Nervous System Disorders

Drugs commonly prescribed for nervous system disorders include:

- Analgesics (painkiller)
- Sleeping drugs for insomnia
- Anti-anxiety drugs for spleen problems
- Anti-depression drugs
- Anti-convulsant drugs for epilepsy
- Drugs for Parkinson disease
- Drugs for dementia
- Drugs for migraine
- Antiemetics drugs to prevent vomiting and nausea.

A. Analgesics

Its function is to relieve pain.
However that pain is actually not a disease, but a symptom that something is wrong with your body.
Pain is worsened by anxiety and fear. Educate yourself to take wise actions. Don't worry incessantly and trust your decision.

There are 2 types of painkillers:

(a) Opioids eg. morphine, to relieve very severe pain.

(b) Non-Opioids are used to treat moderate, acute or chronic pain.
It includes Paracetamol (eg. Panadol and Nefopam) and NSAIDs (eg. Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen).
Children below the age of 16 should avoid taking aspirin as it is associated with Reye's Syndrome in children (a disorder that causes brain and liver damage).

Paracetamol only works for certain pains - it is good for aches, headache, toothache, joint pain and menstrual pain.

How do the Drugs work to subside the pain?

Exclusive: Lingzhi & Anti-Inflammation - CRP and ESR

Sunday, 4 November 2018

Inflammation in the body can be seen from medical test results. If these 2 readings are high, you will feel quite uncomfortable. However, the readings are not specific - they only indicate there is inflammation in the body, but is not able to identify which part exactly.

1) CRP (C-Reactive Protein)
CRP is a blood test marker for testing if there is acute inflammation in the body. CRP is produced in the liver. Normal CRP level is below 3.0 mg/dL. A high CRP means there is inflammation your arteries. It is the initial response of the body to harmful stimuli. It serves to protect and repair the body against something damaging.

2) ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate)
This is a common haematology test to measure chronic inflammation. The normal range is 0-22 mm/hr for men and 0-29 mm/hr for women. Chronic inflammation include those diseases in the "itis" category and conditions caused by over-active immune system.
ESR means the blood flow to a certain area becomes more because when there's inflammation, blood will send platelets, RBC and WBC there.

Some comparison between Chinese and Western treatments

Traditional Chinese medicine may be able to help you but there are 2 disadvantages.

(i) It is very difficult to identify a good supplier because they come from many sources and not all of their efficacy and safety can be independently verified. Depending on preparation, some contain heavy metals or sulphur. However, the advantage of TCM meds is they do not have so much side effects.

(ii) Unlike Western treatment, the nature of TCM treatment is that it does not have the ability to give you an accurate reading of your condition.

On the other hand, Western doctors can tell you exactly what problem you have. However, the consultation charges are expensive. Further, the drugs prescribed can only help with symptomatic treatment and create more problem after long-term consumption.

Some symptoms are easier to be explained from TCM way. By looking at the condition of the face, skin, nails, hair etc, we can quite accurately tell which body organ is damaged.
But other symptoms are clearer to be explained based on medical reports.

---------------------------------

It is common for doctors to advice their patients not to take their medicines together with supplements, because they don't want the patients to blame their drugs for being not effective. Those who are educated and knowledgeable, will know what to do. But for consumers who refuse to learn or seek advice, it is their choice. They can decide not to take.

--------------------------------

An Alternative Solution

Getting a reading of your CRP and ESR can give you information on the level of inflammation in your body. Unfortunately it won't be able to identify exactly which area it is. So how do you address the problem when the figure is high?

Exclusive: What You Should Know About How Doctors Treat Allergy

Sunday, 7 October 2018

Allergy is an auto-immune system disorder. It is the body's hypersensitivity to certain substances. In other words, it is the extreme reaction of the body's immune system to certain allergens e.g. dust mites, animal fur, feather, wind-pollinated pollen, seafood etc.

Why does it happen?

1st stage
A foreign substance enters into the human body for the first time. Lymphocytes (a type of white blood cells) produce antibody which then attach to mast cells (another type of WBC). Together, they create a "memory" that the foreign substance is an allergen.

2nd stage
The same allergen enters the body for the second time. The mast cells release histamines in response to the injury / presence of allergens (to protect body from the allergens). Histamines react and bind with the H1 or H2 receptors.

What You Need to Know About Cholesterol

Sunday, 23 September 2018

Here's a quick refresher on what is cholesterol, why is it important for our body, how medicines work and what are their side effects, and the role Lingzhi plays.

About 75-80% of the cholesterol in our body is produced by our own liver. Only 20-25% come from our food intake. The LDL is "bad" cholesterol because it sticks to the blood vessels, resulting in Hardening and Blockage of arteries. However, if LDL is balanced by a healthy level of HDL, the "good" cholesterol, then it is of no concern, because HDL brings excess LDL back to the liver.

Other causes of blockages in the arteries include:

(i) calcification, where calcium build up in places where it doesn't usually appear.
(ii) thrombus caused by the aggregation and clotting of too much platelets, thereby creating blood clots.

The common Western medication prescribed for blocked blood vessels are Aspirin and Statin drugs:

(a) Aspirin stops platelets from sticking together to form blood clots. Some side effects include stomach pain and internal bleeding.

(b) Statin blocks the enzyme called HMG-CoA Reductase (which is a substance the body needs to make cholesterol) and thus stops the liver from producing too much cholesterol. It acts as a Blood Thinner, by diluting and reducing the viscosity of the blood.

One of the best selling statins is atovarstatin, marketed under the trade name Lipitor. Apart from cholesterol, it is also prescribed by doctors for people with blood circulatory system problems, including HBP (caused by blockage of arteries) and diabetes (which can cause heart attacks and strokes).

Statins are used to lower blood lipids and treat hypercholesterolemia, and should only be used for people who have not responded to lifestyle changes (sleeping early, consuming less alcohol and stop smoking) and special diet (less red meat, no fried food etc) over a period of 4 months. Your doctor should not immediately prescribe you drugs without first advising you to reduce your cholesterol level the natural way.

Note: Statins only block the enzyme from producing new cholesterol but the excess old cholesterols are still circulating in the bloodstream, not cleared.

Side effects of Statins

- Damage muscles, create muscle pain and cause inflammation. This happens gradually and after 5-7 years of consumption, patients will find that their legs have no strength, becoming weaker and weaker.
- Nausea.
- Loss of memory. Under TCM theory, the liver transport blood to the brain. Due to the blockage, less blood flows to the brain, resulting in death of brain cells and hence memory loss over long-term consumption.
- Insomnia.
- Joint pain and back pain.

How does Lingzhi Work?

On the contrary, a Blood Cleanser (such as Lingzhi) works differently.
This is what it does:

(i) Removes excess LDL from the blood vessels.
(ii) Removes excess calcium deposit from the blood vessels.
(iii) Cleanses the blood from blockages like thrombi.
(iv) Regulates the functions of macrophage and endothelial cells. An auto-immune disorder will cause them to behave abnormally. When there is too much fats in the blood vessels, the macrophages would swallow them. But due to the disorder, the macrophages are unable to stop and continue to swallow until they explode. The waste then remains at the site, causing inflammation in the area. Endothelial cells sense the damage and go to rectify it. However, such actions cause blockage when they release too much tissues in their effort to repair, narrowing the vessel passage more and more, potentially causing strokes or heart attacks.

If cholesterol is so bad, why do we need cholesterol?

It is an important building block for body tissues and cell membranes.
It is a source of energy.
It helps in the production of hormones, like oestrogen, testosterone and adrenal hormones.
It assists in bile production in the liver.

If the liver sees that the body's energy and hormone level are low, it will keep producing more cholesterol. For example, according to TCM theory, the gallbladder detox and rests at 11pm-1am and the liver detox at 1am-3am. We should be in deep sleep during these hours for the liver to do its job. People who always sleep late will easily get gout (excess uric acid cannot be excreted by the liver) and are at higher risk of getting gallstones (excess calcium buildup which leads to calcification and stones).

If a person's heart always beat very fast, it utilises a lot of energy, so the liver keeps producing cholesterol to replace the energy used. Likewise, smoking and alcohol also use a lot of energy thus induce the liver to over-produce cholesterol.

Taking Lingzhi help you regulate your cholesterol level. The active component that works on choelsterol is Triterpenoid, which triggers the liver to reduce production of cholesterol. Choose Yung Kien Ganoderma as it contains 12.6% Triterpenoid.

What is the difference between Drugs and Lingzhi?

Statin drug can only block the liver from producing cholesterol.
Lingzhi works to reduce the LDL cholesterol. Lingzhi also help regenerate new liver cells.
Note that should a person have a lot of blockages in his blood vessels, he may feel a lot of ache in his body during the period of healing reaction.

What else must you take at the same time?

(i) Jia Hor Soya Protein - the lecithin also works to cleanse blockages of the blood vessels.
(ii) Jia Hor Fiber - the maltodextrin is helpful in absorbing the free fatty acids from our food to reduce the assimilation of cholesterol into the blood.

Take these together with 12 capsules Yung Kien Ganoderma a day, over a period of 6 months, as recommended by Dr Chen. Click here for details..
