Probiotics and Gut Health, Immune Health & Mental Health

Saturday, 21 March 2026

What is a microbiome?

Micro means small and Biome means a community of living beings. Together, the word Microbiome means a community of microorganisms that live in all regions of our body. This post focuses on the community of microbiome that resides in our guts, also known as Probiotics.

These probiotics which inhabit our digestive tract are commonly called the "good" bacteria. They play a significant role in digestion, immune function, brain health and the ageing process.

Health benefits of probiotics

1. Gut health

> Probiotics optimises gut function by restoring the natural balance of gut bacteria. This is especially important because when we fall sick, the bad microorganisms usually outnumber the good bacteria.

> Prevents and treats diarrhoea eg. from food poisoning or antibiotics.

> Reduces symptoms of certain digestive disorders eg. IBS.

2. Immune system

> Protect against colds and flu (as 70-80% of our immune system are present in the gut).

> Prevent UTIs.

> Reduce severity of certain allergies and eczema.

3. Mind and brain

We usually hear the term Physical Health ~ we should do more exercise and be more physically active. Nowadays, the word Mental Health is the centre of attention. It comprises of 3 aspects: Psychological, Emotional and Social wellbeing. It affects how we think, feel and act. It also determines how we handle stress, relate to others and make healthy choices.

The National Health and Morbidity Survey reported some pretty scary statistics - the number of mental health cases among Malaysians above 16 years old has increased from 10.7% (1996), to 11.2% (2006), and 29.2% (2015). This means approximately 1 in 3 Malaysians had mental health problems in 2015.

Have you heard of the phrase "gut-wrenching experience" or have you ever suffer from the feeling of "butterflies in your stomach"? This is because our gut and brain are connected. The Gut-Brain Axis is a 2-way communication system between our gut (digestive system) and brain (central nervous system). It plays a significant role in our emotions and stress response. The enteric nervous system that regulates our gut is often called the body's Second Brain. It's like a mini-brain that lives in the intestines and helps manage digestion. This Second Brain also sends messages to the big brain; that's why the Gut-Brain Axis is so important. In other words, probiotics play a part in our mental health.

Studies show that taking probiotics can:

> Improve your mood and reduce stress.

> Help with certain mental disorders like depression or anxiety.

4. Other health benefits

> Helps in weight loss as probiotics can help utilise the energy in our food.

> Keeps your heart healthy by maintaining healthier cholesterol levels.

> Promote oral health (reduction of gum disease and prevent caries).

Probiotics v. Prebiotics

Probiotics are food or supplement that contain live microorganisms.

Prebiotics are non digestible food components that selectively stimulate the growth or activity of probiotics.

In order to reach our intestines alive, the probiotics must be able to endure the harsh conditions in the stomach such as strong acid and digestive enzymes, which kill many microorganisms.

Manufacturers overcome this problem by using special production processes and formulation to enhance the tolerance of probiotics to acidic conditions. Some bacterial strains have a naturally inbuilt level of tolerance to acidic conditions. In other words, it all depends on the type and manufacturing process of the probiotic you take.

Key traits of Lactoberry probiotics

The probiotics used in Lactoberry is multicoated with Oligosaccharides (food supply of probiotics) thus giving the probiotics more energy and enhanced potency. This coating increases the probiotic's tolerance against gastric acid and bile salt. Further, the probiotics also can stay in the GI tract for a longer time.

6 Ingredients & Benefits of Lactoberry

1. Bifidobacterium lactis

> Improves digestive conditions in the body eg. lactose intolerance and gluten toxicity as well as improves constipation by reducing gut-transit time.

> Assists digestion and utilisation of nutrients eg. sugar, fibre and macronutrients. It's also partially responsible for the absorption and utilisation of certain vitamins and minerals.

> As about 70% of probiotics are present in our gut, they have an immuno-modulating effects, especially for upper respiratory tract infections eg. common flu and cold.

2. Bifidobacterium longum

> Alleviates GI disorders eg. constipation and antibiotic associated diarrhoea.

> Immuno-modulation eg. improves symptoms of allergy and infections.

> Improvement and homeostasis of intestinal microenvironment. Studies have shown that with decreased micro-biodiversity, we are more prone to have diseases especially metabolic disorders like diabetes.

3. Isomalt

> Sugar substitute. Hence, Lactoberry can be ingested by diabetics.

> Prebiotics, therefore it's a food source for probiotics.

> Stimulates peristalsis, softens stools and alleviates constipation.

4. Berries

> Cranberry powder prevents UTIs due to it containing an abundance of phytonutrients A-type proanthocyanidins or condensed tannins. It prevents the E.Coli bacteria from attaching to the lining of the bladder and urinary tract.

> Raspberry powder, which has one of the richest sources of fibre amongst fruits and tannin content. It prevents constipation by increasing the bulk and letting the stools come out more easily, as well as benefits blood sugar control by improving insulin resistance.

> Blueberry powder is high in antioxidant flavonoids such as anthocyanin, which neutralises free radicals and enhances metabolic waste excretion.

Who needs it?

> Children, teenagers, adults and elderlies.

> Pregnant ladies.

> Patients after medical treatments.

Recommended consumption

> 1-2 sachets for daily maintenance before or after meals. To ensure the benefits of probiotics are reaped, it's important to take Lactoberry on a daily and on-going basis.

> Under special condition such as food poisoning or constipation, increase dosage as needed.

What Are Antioxidants?

Sunday, 5 February 2023

Antioxidants
are good for us because they help combat free radicals in our body (which are produced during oxidation reactions).

Some examples of oxidation include:

  • A peeled apple that is exposed to the air turning brown.
  • For humans, factors that increase free radicals in our body include air pollution, contaminants, alcohol, tobacco and high blood sugar levels. Free radicals lead to hardening of the arteries, cancer, ageing and suppression of immune system.
A balance of free radicals and antioxidants in the body is crucial to prevent oxidative stress and maintain our health. It is important to know that antioxidants are not a group of similar substances. Each antioxidant has different mechanisms of action, serves different physiological functions and has unique chemical behaviours and biological properties. Hence, they are not inter-changeable.

Some of the most important antioxidants

1) Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)

It is water-soluble and helps in the absorption of iron.
Essential for formation of collagen and maintenance of capillaries, muscles and teeth.
Sources: guava, mango, papaya, cabbage, mustard leaves and spinach.

2) Vitamin E

It is a fat-soluble vitamin.
Prevents clots from forming in heart arteries and enhances immune function.
Sources: vege oils, seeds, nuts and cereal grains.

3) Selenium

Plays a key role in the function of various proteins.
Sources: walnuts, grains and seeds, tuna, cod, red snapper, organ meat, poultry, eggs, milk and shellfish.

4) Carotenoids (beta carotene)

Reduces risk of cancer and eye diseases, and boosts immune system.
Sources: carrot, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, kailan, spinach, mango, papaya and watermelon.

5) Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA)

A vitamin-like compound which is soluble in both water and fat.
Lowers blood sugar levels and improves insulin sensitivity.
Sources: red meat, liver, spinach and broccoli.

6) Others

Glutathione, coenzyme Q10, lipoic acid, flavonoids, phenols, polyphenols, phytoestrogens etc.

Food or supplements?

Food. Consuming antioxidants derived from whole foods are more beneficial:

- Because a variety of different antioxidants can be obtained.
- Antioxidants tend to work better in combination with other nutrients in foods.

Supplements. If you are unable to have a healthy diet, then supplements is needed.

Some tips to increase your antioxidant intake

a) Consume at least 5 servings of a variety of colourful fruits and veges everyday.

b) Include nuts, seeds and dried fruits as your snack choice.

c) Spice up your recipes with herbs and spices eg turmeric, cumin, oregano, ginger, clove and cinnamon.

d) Choose tea or coffee, instead of sugary drinks.

Endocrine System Diseases: Application of SH Products

Sunday, 6 February 2022

When we talk about the metabolic and endocrine system, we need to touch on hormones, as they are related. Diseases in this system may not be fatal, but they can make you feel very uncomfortable.

The endocrine / hormonal system has various glands which produce and release hormones into the bloodstream, including pituitary gland, thyroid gland etc. Hormones control our daily activities, including our heartbeat, digestion, sugar level, stress level etc.

Kidney secretes a variety of hormones including erythropoietin, calcitriol and renin. People with kidney diseases will also have hormone imbalance. Because of that, people with kidney problem are more prone to have diabetes and vice versa, people with diabetes will have poor kidney function, as both are inter-related.

Liver also secretes many hormones (e.g. hormones that promote cell growth) and has many key functions associated with hormones in the body (e.g. regulating blood pressure or eliminating unneeded hormones). Liver malfunction affects hormone production. One of the raw materials of hormone is amino acid. Liver plays a function in converting protein into amino acid. If it's not functioning properly, it affects the conversion process.

Diseases are the end result. They are the manifestations of poor organ functions. Let's talk about the 3 main endocrine-related diseases, namely diabetes, ageing and kidney lesion.

1. Diabetes

What do the measurements of sugar level in blood (on empty stomach) mean?

- Less than 5.6 mmol/L (healthy)
- Between 5.6 - 6.9 mmol/L (pre-diabetic)
- More than 7.0 mmol/L (diabetic)

The conventional method of measuring one's sugar level is less accurate as it reflects reading at a particular point in time.

A more accurate measurement is HbA1c (in %), which is something that’s made when glucose (sugar) in your body enters RBC and binds to hemoglobin. Blood HbA1c levels are reflective of how well diabetes is controlled. It’s reflective of blood glucose levels over past 3 months and not daily ups and downs of blood glucose. However, note that the test may give misleading results in certain situations.

How do you interpret the readings?
- 4 - 5.6% (normal)
- 5.7 - 6.4% (pre-diabetic - higher chance of getting diabetes)
- More than 6.5% (diabetic)

RBC flow in our bloodstream. Carbo that is consumed will be converted into glucose, which also enters and moves in our bloodstream. Glucose (being a source of energy) needs to enter RBC so they can be carried into every cell in the body as nutrients for them.

(i) For glucose to enter RBC, it requires insulin. Pancreas is a gland that secretes insulin hormones to control blood sugar level in the body. Insulin acts like a key to bring glucose into RBC. If one does not have sufficient insulin, glucose is unable to go into RBC. Diabetes is a disease that happens when glucose cannot enter RBC i.e. excessive glucose is flowing in the bloodstream.

There are 3 types of diabetes. If you like to learn more, click on this link..
http://www.pingofhealth.com/2012/02/effects-of-ganoderma-lingzhi-on.html

(ii) RBC receptors (which receive insulin) is defective or less sensitive. In such cases, although you have sufficient insulin, but due to poor receptor function, RBC is unable to allow insulin to enter.

Being diabetic is not fatal. It is the complications arising from diabetes that make it life-threatening, such as:
- heart failure or heart attack
- kidney failure
- stroke
- blindness
- amputation.

How Western Drugs Treat Diabetes

There are 5 common types of anti-diabetic drugs. Click here to find out how they work and the long-term side effects:
http://www.pingofhealth.com/2019/06/exclusive-anti-diabetic-drugs-how-they.html

In general, the mechanisms of the drugs either:
(i) Stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin. The side effect is the pancreas may be destroyed in the long-term.
(ii) Stimulate the sensitivity of the receptors so that RBC can receive more glucose.
(iii) Stop the function of liver to convert carbo to glucose. The carbo which cannot be converted ends up in the intestines. Side effects include diarrhoea and bloating.

Insulin is produced by pancreas.  What cause pancreas to malfunction?
(i) Bacterial / viral infections, causing pancreas cells to die.
(ii) Free radicals oxidise pancreas cells, thereby leading to malfunction of pancreas cells.

Western drugs are not able to revive or protect pancreas cells.

How SH Products Work

(a) Lingzhi

How does Lingzhi work?
(i) Lingzhi is effective in strengthening immunity, therefore prevent pancreas from bacterial / viral infections.
Lingzhi being an anti-oxidant has powerful anti-free radical effect.
In other words, Lingzhi has the ability to protect the functions of pancreas and prevent the above-mentioned harm.
(ii) Lingzhi stimulates pancreas to regenerate more new cells.
(iii) Long-term consumption of Lingzhi helps produce healthier bone marrow, which produce better quality RBC, which reduce the problem of insulin resistance etc.

(b) Fiber

Jia Hor Fiber contains Digestion Resistant Maltodextrin. It has been awarded with 4 accreditations.
Click here for details of its benefits..
http://www.pingofhealth.com/2011/12/what-makes-new-generation-jia-hor-fibre.html

Combining Lingzhi with Jia Hor Fiber have the ability to delay conversion of starch to glucose and reduce the burden on the pancreas (as it is not being pressured to suddenly produce more insulin to handle the glucose). The glucose is converted gradually.

For patients with blood sugar reading of persistently above 10 mmol/L, it is recommended to take 2 sachets Fiber before each meal. This can help control the blood sugar level very well.

(c) Pollen

Even though Yung Kien Pollen is sweet, do not be concerned as it is the natural sweetness and not an added ingredient which would increase your blood sugar level. Pollen is good for the spleen. From TCM perspective, spleen helps to regulate the endocrine system and thus is good for your hormones, which help manage your diabetes.

Long-term injection of insulin is not good. The dose would get higher over time. Further, the insulin is sourced from pigs or cows and there's a risk of patients developing a reaction towards it.

Bottom line is, Western drugs do not cleanse our blood; the viscosity still remains high and full of toxins. Because of that, the kidneys have to work harder to filter the blood and the liver has to work harder to detoxify the body, thereby damaging both these organs in the long run. This explains why Lingzhi is so popular today because of its unique ability to do both the above functions.

2. Ageing

Ageing is due to free radicals (FR). Every metabolic activity in our body, including breathing, creates free radicals. The more FR you have, the older you look. The reason is FR oxidise body cells and kill them, and so make you look older. FR is an unstable molecule. In order to stabilise itself, it needs to rob an electron from a body cell. The more FR there are, the more injuries to body cells.

Lingzhi is a powerful anti-oxidant and thus is able to address the FR issue. Experiments have shown that taking Yung Kien Lingzhi for long-term keeps you youthful i.e. delays ageing.

To find out more on the 4 ways how Lingzhi eliminates free radicals, click on this link..
http://www.pingofhealth.com/2012/02/how-lingzhi-ganoderma-eliminates-free.html

3. Kidney Lesion

Kidney cells are easily affected by virus, bacteria and free radicals. We are born with approximately 1 million glomeruli in each kidney. It's not easy to regenerate new glomeruli if the damage is too severe. Kidney failure destroy patients' self-esteem and results in them having a low quality of life. That's why it's important to know how to take care of our kidney.

Lingzhi has the ability to prevent inflammation and death of glomeruli. Lingzhi also helps to regenerate more new kidney cells and has anti-free radical effect.

Exclusive: Yung Kien I Plus for Healthy and Beautiful Eyes

Sunday, 11 October 2020

Our eyes are the windows to the world. Through them, we witness life's greatest moments and create memories that stay with us for a lifetime. But often, we take our eyes for granted. In today's world, our eyes are more vulnerable to damage. The increasing numbers of digital devices in our lives are exposing us to more screen time than ever before. Long stretches of screen time can cause the eyes to get dry or irritated easily, leading to vision problems.

According to the world report on vision by WHO, at least 2.2 billion people have vision impairment or blindness of which over 1 billion cases could have been prevented or have yet to be addressed. In fact, up to 80% of vision impairment or blindness in adults are preventable or treatable. Therefore, we need to protect our eyes starting from now, to maintain healthy vision throughout our lives.

Fight Blue Light Naturally

Blue light is the harmful light that we are exposed to everyday in the forms of sunlight, artificial light and digital electronic devices including smartphones, TVs, tablets and computers. Blue light has short wave length and is very high in energy. It is not easily filtered by our eyes and over-exposure can negatively impact our vision, causing digital eyestrain. Therefore, as the uses of these devices increase, the risk to our eyes increases as well.

This high energy blue light can penetrate deep into the back of our eyes and induce photochemical stress. This may damage the light sensitive cells in the retina, increase the risk of macular degeneration which may lead to permanent vision loss. Besides that, long term exposure to blue light also put pressure on the lens, causing the lens to become cloudy, leading to dry eye symptoms.

Roles of Free Radicals and Antioxidants

Free radicals are the natural by-products of chemical reactions in the body called oxidation. With thousands of unbalanced electrons, these electrons can cause damage to our cells. The tiny spot in the retina called macula is highly susceptible to oxidative stress because it consumes high levels of oxygen that leads to the production of high levels of free radicals.

These free radicals are very unstable and can cause damage to the cells, nerves and capillaries of the eyes. Long-term accumulation of free radicals can lead to progressive vision problems and macula degeneration.

Therefore, keeping free radicals in balance is extremely critical in the prevention of macula degeneration. Antioxidants are the natural substances whose job is to clean up these free radical wastes in the cells (like fibre which cleans up the waste products in the intestines). They are able to neutralise the destructive properties of free radicals that are harmful to the body and the eyes.

Ingredients in Yung Kien I Plus

While it is impossible to completely avoid the exposure to blue light and oxidative stress, there are ways to protect your eyes and maintain healthy vision for a lifetime. Regardless of age, supplementing with nutrients beneficial to eyes starting from today can help to protect your eyes for a lifetime.

Yung Kien I Plus is a perfect health food to protect the eyesight. It is rich in these 6 major ingredients:

  • Lutein
  • Zeaxanthin
  • Blackcurrant polyphenol
  • Bilberry extracts
  • Astaxanthin
  • Wolfberry extracts.

Uniqueness of Shuang Hor Lingzhi (Part 3 - Enhance Liver Function & Antioxidant)

Sunday, 20 October 2019

This is a continuation of the articles posted last 2 weeks on what makes Shuang Hor Lingzhi so unique, as compared to the other lingzhi and healthfood in the market.

The first 2 points are that Shuang Hor Lingzhi has the ability to:

1. Modulate immune system
2. Improve blood circulation

Now we continue with the last 2 points.

3. Enhance liver function / detoxification

Functions of liver

(a) Liver is the biggest detoxifier in the body.
All kinds of toxins, bacteria, old and dead cells will be converted by the liver to non-toxic substances and sent to the kidney / large intestines to be passed out as urine / stools. If the toxins cannot be expelled through proper channels, they will be forced out through the skin, face, ear, mouth, belly button etc thereby causing allergies, pimples, ulcers and pus discharge.

(b) Nutrient fabrication factory.
Nutrients from the food we eat need to be converted before the body can utilise them e.g. protein become amino acid, carbo become glucose, fat become fatty acid.
The small intestines absorb these nutrients, the liver will synthesise it to become components which can be utilised by the body (like glycogen, fats and protein).

(c) Storage of vitamins A, B12 and D and iron mineral.
If the liver function is bad, you will be deficient in these nutrients. For example, such a person may be anaemic because his liver cannot store iron.

(d) Clotting factor, platelet enzyme and bile manufacturing centre.
Platelet enzyme is the enzyme that produces platelets. Together with the clotting factor, they prevent internal bleeding and non-stop bleeding. Bile is produced by the liver, which is stored in the gallbladder.

(e) Control cholesterol and triglyceride.
The readings of these 2 components will be high when the liver is damaged. Food which are deep-fried, fatty and oily are bad for the liver because the liver needs a lot of energy to detox and pass them out of the body system.

There are more than 500 chemical reactions going on in the liver.
Some symptoms of weakening liver include fatigue, low energy, bad breath, bitter taste in the mouth, nausea / vomit, jaundice (yellowish palm / eyes), bruise /bleeding and dark colour urine.

For detailed info, click on this link:
http://www.pingofhealth.com/2018/12/exclusive-inflammation-of-liver.html

Damaged liver cells can turn into Cirrhosis, then Hardening and eventually Cancer.
- Hepatitis A, B, D, E and K are at the stage of Damaged liver.
- Hepatitis C is during the Cirrhosis stage.
- High GOT / GPT readings are generally detected just before the Cirrhosis stage.

What is fatty liver?
It is when the liver cells can no longer flush out fats from the body. The fats accumulate around the liver. It is the stage before Cirrhosis. A common symptom is the appearance of yellow patches in the eye.

Causes of liver damage include:
- Food
- Emotion
- Lifestyle e.g. sleeping late or too much alcohol
- Bacteria / virus
- Blood transfusion.

5 Causes of Low Back Pain and How to Remedy in 2 Easy Steps

Thursday, 6 December 2012

Do you know that low back pain is the second largest cause of work absence, after common cold? The majority of low back pain disappear by themselves after awhile, but be cautious as it could be something as serious as cancer or aortic aneurysm.

The intervertebral disc is a common source of pain. Genetic studies have found that deficiency of collagen and vitamin D result in degeneration of these discs. A quality collagen plays an important role to calm down the inflammation that is causing your back pain. Click on this link to discover How to Choose a Good Collagen.

Causes of Low Back Pain

1) Sciatica (pinched nerve). Usually caused by a herniated or slipped disc, which then compresses on a nerve root. Depending on the nerves that are compressed, pain can be experienced at different locations, known as dermatomal distribution.

2) A pain may be due to poor posture, prolonged sitting at a computer or other job-related tasks. Pressure in the disc increases with sitting and this can worsen back pain. You will feel better lying down as this position puts the least amount of pressure on the disc.

3) Narrowing of the nerve openings, around the spinal cord or nerve roots. It can also cause leg pain and reduce the distance a person can walk.

4) Localised pain arises when an area is stretched or its muscles overused. The cause is more difficult to pinpoint.

5) Back arthritis affects the joints, and results in stiffness and pain. Click on this link to learn more about Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Learn how to prevent destruction of your cartilage arising from oxidative stress. If you know how that works, your will manage your arthritis condition and your back pain will be significantly reduced.

Warning signs of back pain that warrant urgent medical attention:
  • Fever
  • Progressive movement of the pain from the back into the leg
  • Numbness down the leg
  • Bowel or bladder incontinence
  • Pain that is unrelieved at rest or disturbs sleep.

Most non-specific back pains ease and go away within 6 weeks. However, even though the pain has eased, it is common to have further bouts of pain from time to time in the future. The pain can persist for several months or longer.

Pain is merely a signal that something is wrong. Getting rid of the pain does not get rid of the source of the problem. Hence it is extremely important to ensure that you have solutions that can address the root cause of the pain to prevent future complications.

(Source: Pain in the Back, Dr Eugene Wong, StarFit4Life, 19 August 2012)

How Lingzhi (Ganoderma) Eliminates Free Radicals

Thursday, 23 February 2012

Most of us have heard of (or even use) the terms free radical, oxidation and antioxidant when we talk about health or ageing. If you're a bit hazy on what they all mean, I hope this post will help clear up some of your confusion.

What is Free Radical?

It is any atom or molecule that has a single unpaired electron in the outer shell and hence is not stable.

What is Oxidation?

For the free radicals to become stable, it has to "steal" an electron from our body cells to stabilize itself, resulting in the death of our cells. Oxidation is the process of robbing electrons from our cells by the free radicals. If there are many free radicals, our cells become more fragile and weaker when the free radicals attack the DNA and change the structure of our cells. So the more free radicals there are, the more easily a person will fall sick, age and die.

What is Antioxidant?
Antioxidant is the substance that may protect our cells against free radicals. It can prevent or slow the oxidative damage to our body. Antioxidants act as "free radical scavengers" and hence prevent and repair the damage done by these free radicals.

Where do Free Radicals come from?
Free radicals are molecules produced when our body breaks down food or from environmental exposures like tobacco smoke and radiation. Free radicals are also produced with each breathe we take. Each of our cell has a "generator" to produce energy, called Mitochondria. When we breath, the mitochondria takes in oxygen and releases a waste material called free radical. There are 2 types, namely, Superoxide Radical and Hydroxyl Radical

What sort of Harm will Free Radicals Cause?
If the quantum is too high, it will damage our cells, make them vulnerable and die easily. This happens to people with stroke, cancer or arteriosclerosis (hardening of arteries).

Free radicals will also cause us to age faster; makes us grow old more quickly.
Further, it will make our body organs deteriorate faster.

How does our Body Eliminate Free Radicals?
Our blood has natural antioxidant enzymes, which are capable to eliminate these free radicals. It's called a Multi-Enzymatic Anti-Oxidation System, comprising of these main enzymes:
a) Glutathione
b) Superoxide dismutase (SOD)
c) Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD)
d) Catalase

How healthy is a person depends on:
a) How good is his defense system (white blood cells)
b) How good is his multi-enzymatic system. If it is working well, he will feel energetic and healthy. For instance, a person suffering from an inherited disorder called G6PD deficiency has red blood cells (RBCs) that cannot transport oxygen effectively throughout the body. Their RBCs are destroyed faster than their body can replace them.

What Foods Provide Antioxidants?
Vitamins C and E eg. from fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
Alpha lipoic acid, generally made by our body but also found in red meat.
Polyphenol from grapes.

How does Lingzhi Work to Eliminate Free Radicals?

a) Indirect method. A continuous consumption of 12 capsules of lingzhi (Yung Kien Ganoderma) per day for 6 months is proven to increase the level of the enzymes mentioned above in our bloodstream. When our body's anti-oxidant ability is increased, it can eliminate the free radicals more effectively.

b) Brain. 80% of our body's oxygen intake is used to supply our brain cells. Our brain suffers the biggest damage as it's the most exposed to free radicals. As we grow older and our brain cells die, it is not able to regenerate. Hence, people become forgetful and have poorer memory. Most of the enzymes are used in our brain. When we are older, the enzymes reduce, our anti-oxidation ability also reduce, hence the free radicals increase.

The good news is, according to a research report by Professor Lin from Beijing University, the findings suggest that lingzhi has the ability to increase the SOD enzyme in our brain so that the oxidation process in our brain is slowed down.

c) Triterpenoid. There are more than 200 types of ganoderic acid in the triterpenoid component of a lingzhi. In the world, only Shuang Hor has the technology to extract the most number of ganoderic acid. Even then, it can only extract up to 9 types. It is found that Ganoderic Acid A, B, C and D have the ability to directly eliminate the free radicals.

d) Protects macrophage. Macrophage is a component of our blood that eats up cancer cells thus reducing our chance of contracting cancer. However, macrophage is easily oxidized. Lingzhi has the ability to protect our macrophage from being oxidised, and therefore strengthening our immune system.

I hope you found my post helpful in your understanding of why antioxidants are so important to our body and how lingzhi works to eliminate the free radicals to keep us youthful, energetic and disease-free.

Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis Explained

Sunday, 30 October 2011

Arthritis literally means joint inflammation. It is used to refer to diseases that cause problems within the joint capsule. There are more than 100 types of arthritis affecting people of all ages.

Osteoarthritis is the most common chronic degenerative arthritis. It most often affects the hands, knees and spine. There is a gradual loss of cartilage from the joints, causing increased stress to the bones, and the sufferers will feel pain when the joints are moving. Morning stiffness, if present, lasts less than 30 minutes. Joint swelling can occur, either as a result of fluid accumulation or due to the growth of osteophytes or bone spurs.

One of the main components of cartilage is collagen. Click here to find out what is collagen and why is it important for our health and beauty. Our body needs to build cartilage at the same rate as it's wearing down in order to maintain healthy joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease, meaning our body's immune system begins attacking the cartilage and synovial lining of the joint. This unbalanced inflammatory process causes significant destruction of healthy tissue. It starts insidiously with fatigue, muscle pain and fever and eventually affects our joints, making them painful, swollen and feel stiff. Morning stiffness is prolonged and lasts more than 1 hour.

Exercise is strongly encouraged for arthritis sufferers. Strengthening exercises help to improve joint stability and thus reduce pain. Endurance exercises improve cardiovascular fitness and help feelings of fatigue.

Low impact exercises such as swimming and riding a bicycle are recommended.
Start at a low intensity and for a short time. It is normal to feel some joint or muscle soreness after exercising. But if the pain lasts more than 1 day, the exercise was probably too long or too vigorous.

Treatment

It is important to note that the destruction of the cartilage in both of these diseases arises from oxidative stress.

The basic traditional treatment of both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis is painkillers such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and aspirin. While these drugs reduce inflammation in joints, they cause many side effects like stomach ulcers and upper-gastrointestinal bleeding

In other words, these drugs merely provide pain relief without attacking the underlying cause of the disease - oxidative stress. Antioxidants is your solution to neutralize oxidative stress. How Does Nutritional Supplements Prevent Cancer?

Sunday, 25 September 2011

Dr. Ray D. Strand is an American who graduated from the University of Colorado Medical School. He has been actively practicing as a doctor for the past 30 years.

He is the author of a book titled "What Your Doctor Doesn't Know About Nutritional Medicine May Be Killing You". His rather unconventional view is - the best defense against developing any degenerative diseases and pre-mature aging is the body's natural defense system, not the drugs he prescribes.

Please spend 2 minutes to read this excerpt from his book:

"Nutritional science offers us the greatest hope in our fight against cancer and several other degenerative diseases. They not only help prevent cancer but may actually enhance the traditional chemo- and radiation therapy. How can the process of building up the body's natural defense be bad? Shouldn't physicians want their patients to be as healthy as possible, since cancer treatments are going to put patients under the greatest stress they have had to endure in their lives?

Natural antioxidants and their supporting nutrients are the ideal chemo-preventive agents for many reasons. They
  • limit and even prevent the free-radical damage to the DNA nucleus of the cell.
  • provide the proper nutrients needed for the body to repair any damage that has been done already.
  • are safe and may be taken over a lifetime. (Pharmaceutical drugs do not share this advantage. Tamoxifen, which has been shown to decrease the risk of breast cancer, has very serious side effects.)
  • are relatively inexpensive.
  • provide the best defense against further advancement of cancer.
  • protect the body against oxidative stress that chemotherapy and radiation create.
  • embellish the cancer-fighting ability of chemotherapy and radiation.
  • inhibit the replication and growth of the cancer.
  • have been shown to cause tumor regression in some instances.

We cannot deny that the effectiveness of traditional cancer treatments has reached a plateau. Oncologists and radiation therapists must become more open-minded about antioxidant use in their patients. As researchers seriously consider the use of multiple antioxidants at optimal levels, cancer prevention and treatment may well be revolutionized. In the meantime the research that is presently available supports the use of antioxidants in all stages of chemo-prevention and cancer therapy."

What Your Doctor Doesn't Know About Nutritional Medicine May Be Killing You

Tuesday, 20 September 2011

Have you heard of Dr. Ray D. Strand, M.D.? Neither have I.
Until my good friend lent me this book.
It's truly an eye-opening piece of work for me.
According to Dr. Ray Strand, America's doctors are trained to treat disease with drugs. But they are not trained in the most powerful tool for our health, which are nutritional supplementsDrawing on extensive research culled from over 1,300 clinical studies in well-known medical journals, Dr. Strand revealed the critical role that nutritional medicine plays in slowing the aging process and reclaiming health, even after the devastation of illnesses such as:

Allow me to quote some of the key points from this book:-

Page 8, "After reviewing medical research studies, I have absolutely no doubt that my patients who take high-quality nutritional supplements have a health benefit over those who don't."

Page 13, "...physicians routinely perform pap smears, mammograms, blood work, and the physical exam primarily to see if any silent diseases already exist in their patients. What has been prevented?
...If we are going to label something preventive, then I believe it should actually prevent something. I strongly suggest that true preventive medicine involves encouraging and supporting patients to take a threefold approach: eating healthily, practicing a consistent exercise program, and consuming high-quality nutritional supplements."

Page 29, "Every medication I prescribe causes increased oxidative stress in the body. Chemotherapeutic drugs and radiation therapy primarily work by creating oxidative stress damage to the cancer cells, which kills them. ... The increased oxidative stress also causes collateral damage to normal cells."

Page 37, " In the chapters that follow, I will lay out the medical evidence that shows how you as an individual can improve your antioxidant defense system by eating a healthy diet, exercising moderately, and taking high-quality nutritional supplements."

Page 50, "Physicians want to know beyond any shadow of doubt that an particular nutrient will help before they will go on record to recommend any form of nutritional supplementation. But they are missing the all-important synergistic effects of nutritional medicine.
...This refers to the way antioxidants work together. To halt oxidative stress, the body needs enough antioxidants to handle all the free radicals, and the antioxidants need all of the supporting nutrients to do their job well."

Page 79, "The good news lies in the fact that medical research is beginning to support the idea of supplementation with a mixture of antioxidants and supporting nutrients. This mix can actually enhance traditional chemo and radiation therapy while at the same time protecting normal cells from toxic effects."

Check out his book for the full details. Or if 204 pages of fine words put you to sleep, Dr. Ray Strand's website gives a great summary on his Concept of Nutritional Medicine: http://www.raystrand.com/nutritional-medicine.asp
