How to Interpret Your Blood Test Results

Saturday, 7 February 2026

Doing an annual blood test is an important way to keep track of your overall physical well-being. However, you may want to do it more often if you:

(a) Experience unusual, persistent symptoms eg. fatigue, abnormal weight gain or new pain.
(b) Want to optimise your health eg. knowing your blood components such as HDL and LDL cholesterol to lower the risk of heart attacks or stroke.
(c) Want to reduce the risk of contracting diseases.

Standard blood screenings usually cover tests on lipid, liver, kidney, blood sugar, bone, tumour markers and blood count. Below is a summary of the optimal readings and how Ganoderma / Lingzhi help to improve your health conditions.

1. Lipid profile

Total cholesterol (HDL + LDL) = <200 mg/dL (5.2 mmol/L)
HDL = >60 mg/dL (1.6 mmol/L)
LDL = <100 mg/dL (2.6 mmol/L)
Total / HDL Ratio = <4.0
Triglycerides (VLDL) = <150 mg/dL (1.7 mmol/L).

Ganoderma and Cholesterol

- Reduce fatty liver.
- Reduce LDL cholesterol.
- Inhibit formation and synthesis of cholesterol in liver cells.

2. Liver profile

Bilirubin (from breakdown of haemoglobin) = <26 umol/L
ALP (alkaline phosphatase enzyme) = 25-105 mu/ml
SGOT (AST) = 0-30 mu/ml
SGPT (ALT) =  0-30 mu/ml
GGT (enzyme that helps liver metabolise drugs and other toxins) = 0-50 IU/L
Albumin = 35-50 g/L
Globulin = 25-36 g/L
Total Protein (albumin + globulin) = 60-82 g/L
Albumin / Globulin Ratio = 1.2-2.5

NB: Increased ALP and GGT is commonly due to bile duct obstruction.

Ganoderma and Liver Protection (YK1)

- Protect liver from superoxide-induced damage and free radical scavenging activity.
- Inhibit replication of hepatitis B virus.
- Decrease GOT and GPT level and increase liver protein level.
- Protect liver from chemical or toxicity-induced damage eg. alcohol and fried food.

3. Kidney profile

Urea/BUN (amount of urea nitrogen) = 2.5-6.6 mmol/L
Creatinine (chemical waste product from muscle and protein metabolism) = 62-115 umol/L
eGFR (estimated GFR, based on creatinine level and age) = >90 ml
Potassium = 3.4-5.0 mmol/L
Sodium (body's water balance) = 137-149 mmol/L
Chloride = 101-108 mmol/L

NB: High BUN level may indicate kidney disease such as glomerulonephritis or kidney failure.
High creatinine level may indicate kidney problems and muscle disease.

Ganoderma and Kidney Protection (YKK/S)

- Protect from kidney disease due to hypertension and diabetes.
- Protect from kidney inflammation due to SLE.
- Protect from kidney damage due to excessive alcohol and toxicity.
- Protect kidney tubule and glomerulus from chronic and acute infections.
- Protect renal cortex from free radicals.

4. Diabetes mellitus profile

Fasting blood glucose (overnight fast) = <100 mg/dL ( 5.6 mmol/L)
Random blood glucose (non-fasting) = <200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol /L)
Glycated haemoglobin test (HbA1c) (average blood sugar level for past 3 months) = <5.7%

NB: Low glucose can occur when a diabetic person consumes too much insulin or other diabetic medications, or eats too little food while taking these medications.

Ganoderma and Diabetes (YKI)

- Prevent hyperglycaemia.
- Protect beta-cells in pancreas.
- Modulate blood glucose.
- Lower after-meal blood glucose.

5. Bone & joint profile
Calcium = 2.1-2.6 mmol/L
Phosphate = 0.77-1.42 mmol/L
Uric acid (diagnose gout) = 220-452 umol/l
RA Factor (proteins produced by immune system that attack healthy tissues, associated with autoimmune disease) = <35 IU/mL

Vitaking and Jia Hor Calcium

Regular consumption of Vitaking collagen and Jia Hor Calcium can strengthen your bones and slow down the rate of osteoporosis

6. Tumour markers

CEA (Most common: colon & rectum. Others: pancreas, stomach, breasts, lung, certain types of thyroid and ovarian cancer) = 0.0-5.0 ng/mL
Alpha Fetoprotein (Most common: liver. Others: ovaries and testicles) = 0.0-15.0 ng/mL
CA 19.9 (Most common: pancreas. Others: cirrhosis & gallstones) = 0.0-37.0 U/mL
CA 125 (ovarian cancer) = 0.0-35.0 U/mL
Total PSA (prostate cancer) = 0.0-4.0 NG/mL
EBV EA+EBNA-1 IgA (nose cancer) = <9 EU/mL

Tumour marker tests are used to:

- Monitor your treatment. If tumour marker levels go down, it usually means the treatment is working.
- Help find out if a cancer has spread to other tissues.
- Help predict the likely outcome of your disease.
- Check if the cancer has come back after successful treatment.
- Screen people at high risk for cancer (eg. family history or previous diagnosis of another type of cancer).

Ganoderma and Cancer (YKC)

- Targets cancer from initial to terminal stage.
- Works for all kinds of common cancers.
- Enhance effectiveness of medication.
- Ease side effects of chemo.
- Helps maintain remission status (5 years).

7. Complete blood count
RBC = Men: 4.32-5.72 x 10^12/L. Women: 3.90-5.03 x 10^12/L
Haemoglobin (protein in RBC that carries oxygen) = Men: 13.5-17.5 g/L. Women: 12.0-15.5 g/L
Haematocrit (% of RBC in total blood volume) = Men: 38.8-50.0%. Women: 34.9-44.5%
WBC = 3.5-10.5 x 10^9/L
Platelets = 150-450 x 10^9/L
ESR (clumping of RBC when inflammation happens) = 0-10 mm/hr.

Abnormal levels may indicate:
- Nutritional deficiencies eg. vitamins B6, B12, iron.
- Heart problems eg. bone marrow, heart condition, cancer.
- High WBC - tissue inflammation or infection.
- High ESR - inflammation.

WBC differential count should total to 100%.
- Phagocytes = Granulocytes (Neutrophil 40-75% + Eosinophil 0-6% + Basophil 0-2%) + Macrophage + Dendritic cell + Mast cell.
- Lymphocyte 20-45% = T-cells + B-cells + NKC
- Monocyte 2-12%.

If the % is out of range, it indicates infection or inflammation in the body.

Ganoderma and Blood protection (A00003 - Taiwan Healthfood Act) (YKB)

(a) Capable of promoting production of antibodies.
Animal test: mice given ganoderma orally show an increase in IgA, IgB and IgG.
IgA is existing antibody, so its proliferation will naturally strengthen immunity. IgM and IgG imply that body can produce corresponding antibodies quickly when attacked by pathogens.

(b) Capable of promoting growth of immune cells.
Animal test: mice given ganoderma orally show an increase in T-cell and B-cell.

(c) Capable of regulating functions of T-cells.
Reduce the occurrences of allergy symptoms.

(d) Capable of enhancing the vitality of NKC.
Animal test: mice given ganoderma show increased NKC activity.

(e) Capable of enhancing the vitality of phagocytes.

Conclusion

1. Blood tests offer an important snapshot of your overall health. They are also a good way to catch an illness or disease early or see how well your body responds to treatments for various conditions.

2. Get routine blood tests done at least once a year. Talk to your doctor to learn if there are any other tests you may need.

3. The improvement that's reflected in blood test results arising from consuming Ganoderma can be seen after 4-6 months of consistently consuming an appropriate dose.

Lingzhi & Kidney Protection

Saturday, 26 August 2023

The human kidneys are 2 bean-shaped organs (size about 10 - 13 cm each) located at the back of the abdomen, just below the rib cage. Each has about 1 million nephrons and each nephron includes a filter called glomerulus and a tubule. The kidneys basically produce urine which is stored in the bladder before being passed out.

Functions of Kidney

a) Filters and removes wastes from our blood, like urea and creatinine.

b) Regulates and maintains fluid and electrolytes balance in the body, like water, sodium and potassium.

c) Secretes hormones, namely:

  • Erythropoietin - for red blood cells production.
  • Renin - to control blood pressure.
  • Calcitriol - a form of vitamin D3 that helps the body absorb calcium from the stomach.
Symptoms of Kidney Failure

a) Reduced amount of urine.
b) Swelling of legs, ankles and feet from retention of fluids.
c) Unexplained shortness of breath.
d) Excessive drowsiness or fatigue.
e) Persistent nausea, confusion, pain or pressure in your chest.

Complications of Kidney Failure

a) Fluid retention - swelling.
b) Cerebral and cardiovascular disease.
c) Anaemia.

Causes of Kidney Failure

a) High blood pressure.
b) Diabetes.
c) Infection or inflammation.
d) Auto-immune disease eg. SLE.
e) Obstruction of urinary tract due to enlarged prostate or kidney stones.
f) Drugs or toxins.

Tests and Diagnosis

1. Urinalysis - abnormal protein, sugar, red or white blood cells and high levels of bacteria.

2. Blood samples (normal levels)
  • Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) : 7 to 20 mg/dL (2.5 to 7.1 mmol/L).
  • Creatinine (Cr) : 0.7 to 1.3 mg/dL for men and 0.6 to 1.1 mg/dL for women.
  • Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) : >60 mL/min/1.73m2.
3. Ultrasounds, MRI and CT scans for kidney.

Treatments

1. Medicines to control the causes / symptoms, reduce complications and slow the progression:
  • High blood pressure.
  • High cholesterol level.
  • Anaemia.
  • Relieve swelling.
  • Protect the bones.
2. Dialysis for end-stage kidney failure:
  • When eGFR is <15.
  • There are 2 types of dialysis : (i) Hemodialysis (artificial kidney machine) and (ii) Peritoneal dialysis (belly lining acts as a natural filter).
3. Kidney transplant for end-stage kidney failure.

There is a relatively high failure of transplanted kidney : 4% of cases within 1 year after transplant and 21% of cases within 5 years after transplant.

How to Prevent Kidney Failure?

1. Choose a healthy diet - less salt, sugar and potassium in food.

2. Maintain normal body weight (BMI < 25).

3. Be physically active.

4. Maintain healthy lifestyle - reduce smoking and alcohol, manage stress, have sufficient rest.

5. Take medications under doctor supervision.

6. TCM : eat more "black food" to protect the kidney.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

1. According to TCM knowledge, kidney stores essence and governs qi, and is involved in:
  • growth & development.
  • reproduction (infertility / impotence).
  • water metabolism (fluid balance in the body).
  • bone and marrow.
  • brain development.
  • hair growth.
  • nourishes and moistens skin.
2. Weaknesses in the kidney show up in:
  • weak bones, muscles and tendons.
  • loose teeth.
  • impotency and infertility (sperm lack vitality, weak uterus and irregular menstruation).
  • water retention and urination problems.
  • pain in the waist and knees.
  • loss or thinning of hair and baldness.
  • weak hearing (ringing).
  • forgetfulness.
  • insomnia.
  • dry and dark complexion.
  • difficulty in breathing.
  • cold limbs.
  • abnormal growth and development in children.
3. These are some ways to protect the kidney:
  • Avoid drinking cold water.
  • Avoid excessive activities during kidney's detox period (5 - 7 pm).
  • Avoid excessive sex.
  • Emotions - great fright can impair kidney energy (to overcome it, try to do activities which involve thinking).
  • Eat natural black food like black fungus, mushrooms, seaweed, black sesame, dried longan and purple grapes.
Why Choose Ganoderma / Lingzhi to Protect your Kidney

Lingzhi is a type of mushroom / fungus that has healing properties. It has more than 2,000 years of history and 50 years of modern scientific research. Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing states that consistent and long-term consumption of Lingzhi helps to regulate and rejuvenate your bodily functions, slow down the speed of ageing, prolong one's life and improve the quality of life.

There are more than 1,000 search results for keywords "lingzhi", "ganoderma" or "reishi" in Pubmed publications, U.S. National Library of Medicine and National Institute of Health.

Why Choose Shuang Hor Ganoderma / Lingzhi

1) Shuang Hor has been in the business of farming, production and distribution of Lingzhi for more than 35 years.
2) Shuang Hor has dedicated many years in the R&D of Lingzhi.
3) Shuang Hor owns all the greenhouses and factories for its Lingzhi production.
4) Shuang Hor's ganoderma products are rich with Triterpenoid and Macromolecular Polysaccharides content.

4. Remove free radicals and anti-oxidation
  • Reduce attacks by free radicals to the kidney.

Evidence of Lingzhi and Kidney Protection

There are numerous scientific researches and evidence-based reports done in this field. Here are a few:

1. Dudhgaonkar, 2009, International Immunopharmacology
Ganoderma suppresses inflammation - the study shows the anti-inflammatory effects of triterpenes isolated from Ganoderma lucidum.

2. Zhong, et al., 2008, Clinical and Investigation Medicine Journal
Glomerulonephritis is the inflammation of glomeruli, resulting in poor filtration rate and eventually leading to chronic kidney failure. The study shows Ganoderma has a protective effect on renal damage in rats with chronic glomerulonephritis.

Lingzhi improves chronic glomerulonephritis and maintain the structure of healthy glomerulus.

3. Journal of Clinical Hemorheology & Microcirculation, 2004
Protenuria is a condition when too much protein is passed out in the urine, which is a sign of kidney damage. Protein is required in the blood to build muscle, repair tissue and fight infection. Ganoderma suppresses endothelial cell cytotoxicity and reduces proteinuria of patients with glomerulosclerosis nephrosis.

4. Journal of Asian Natural Products Resources, Dec 2006
Lingzhi lowers serum glucose, creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) - the study found positive effect of polysaccharides from Ganoderma on diabetic nephropathy (deterioration of kidney) in mice.

How to Consume

Dosage for Yung Kien Ganoderma
  • Prevention : 4-8 capsules / day.
  • Pre-illness : >12 capsules / day.
  • Disease : >30 capsules / day for kidney failure and kidney cancer.
Dosage for YKK and YKS Ganoderma
  • Dialysis patients : 2 sachets YKK / day or 12 tablets YKS / day. Avoid taking 1-2 hours before kidney dialysis.

Testimonies

1. Atrophic kidney (Ganoderma Magazine, Issue 44)

A lady used to consume a lot of painkillers to the stage where her kidney function was affected whereby the size of her kidney shrunk. After consuming Lingzhi, her kidney function improved. Due to the condition being detected at early stage, Lingzhi was able to help her condition improve back to normal.

2. Rhabdomyolysis and renal failure

Mr Lin Zhi Feng, a Taiwanese, aged 49, took a combination of Western and Chinese drugs to treat his diabetic condition, leading to rhabdomyolysis and kidney failure. Due to the high urea reading, he needed dialysis. The initial result of dialysis was not promising due to the side effects of edema etc.

He decided to take 2 tablets YKK each time, before breakfast, lunch, dinner and before sleep, totalling 8 tablets each day. He also took 2 sachets of YKi Ganoderma/day, morning and evening.

After taking for 1 week, he showed clinical improvement.

After taking for 1 month, his blood test results improved.

After taking for 2 months, the side effects of treatment eg. anaemia, tiredness and spasms reduced.

After taking YKK for 4 months, there are significant improvements in all his blood parameters.

Exclusive: Benefits of Lingzhi on 3-Highs, Heart and Brain Diseases

Sunday, 11 June 2023

In May 2023, Ms Pei-Chin Chung conducted a seminar on the benefits of Lingzhi for people with health problems relating to the "3-Highs" (high blood pressure, blood lipid and blood sugar), and how they impact your cardiovascular and cerebrovascular systems if you don't control them properly.

Below are the credentials of this esteemed speaker, Ms Pei-Chin Chung, a Dietitian with Double Crane Group in Taiwan:

  • Bachelor of Science, Taipei Medical University, School of Nutrition and Health Sciences.
  • Master of Science, Taipei Medical University, School of Nutrition and Health Sciences.
  • Specialist Dietitian of Renal Nutrition, Obesity and Sports Nutrition.
  • Professional Health Food Engineer.
  • Senior Professional and Technical Certified Dietitian.
  • Zumba instructor.
Please find below her talk.
__________________________

Ms Chung says this topic on 3-Highs is particularly important because of 2 reasons:

(a) No noticeable symptoms at early stage

The most worrying situation about the 3-Highs is that it does not cause any discomfort or noticeable symptoms in the early stage. As a consequence, it's easy for people with 3-Highs to ignore or underestimate the severity of the warning signs until it's too late.

Unless you have no friends, all of you know someone who suffer from 3-Highs, or perhaps you yourself are a patient. But you don't flip out or feel too scared, because it's so common nowadays, right?

However, do you know the mortality rate is frighteningly high if left untreated?

According to the statistics on the Top 10 Causes of Death in Malaysia in 2021:

> Two of the Top 10 causes of death are directly related to the 3-Highs, namely diabetes (no. 6) and hypertension (no. 8).
> Two of the Top 10 causes of death are indirectly related to the 3-Highs, namely ischaemic heart disease (no. 2) and cerebrovascular diseases (no. 4).
> Four of the Top 10 causes of death are lung-related - covid-19 (no. 1), pneumonia (no. 3), lung cancer (no. 7) and chronic lower respiratory disease (no. 9).
A study in Taiwan has found that nearly 80% of people who died from covid-19 (no. 1) also have high blood sugar
Apart from smoking, it has been clinically demonstrated that people with long-term high blood sugar are more vulnerable to pneumonia (no. 3).

That's why it's so important to take precautions to prevent getting the 3-Highs because there are no symptoms in the early stage. The illness is usually detected when it has progressed to a severe stage.

Ms Chung shares various scientific studies demonstrating:

(a) The effectiveness of Lingzhi against diabetes.

(b) Lingzhi's protective effect on kidney.

(c) Lingzhi protects blood vessels and improve atherosclerosis.

(d) Lingzhi protects blood vessels from inflammation.

(e) Lingzhi protects the heart.

(f) Lingzhi protects the brain.

Ms Chung also shares 2 amazing testimonies, one of a lady with high triglycerides and diabetes problem, another of a man who suffered from a stroke, and the dosage and duration of their consumption of Lingzhi to help with their speedy recovery.

Endocrine System Diseases: Application of SH Products

Sunday, 6 February 2022

When we talk about the metabolic and endocrine system, we need to touch on hormones, as they are related. Diseases in this system may not be fatal, but they can make you feel very uncomfortable.

The endocrine / hormonal system has various glands which produce and release hormones into the bloodstream, including pituitary gland, thyroid gland etc. Hormones control our daily activities, including our heartbeat, digestion, sugar level, stress level etc.

Kidney secretes a variety of hormones including erythropoietin, calcitriol and renin. People with kidney diseases will also have hormone imbalance. Because of that, people with kidney problem are more prone to have diabetes and vice versa, people with diabetes will have poor kidney function, as both are inter-related.

Liver also secretes many hormones (e.g. hormones that promote cell growth) and has many key functions associated with hormones in the body (e.g. regulating blood pressure or eliminating unneeded hormones). Liver malfunction affects hormone production. One of the raw materials of hormone is amino acid. Liver plays a function in converting protein into amino acid. If it's not functioning properly, it affects the conversion process.

Diseases are the end result. They are the manifestations of poor organ functions. Let's talk about the 3 main endocrine-related diseases, namely diabetes, ageing and kidney lesion.

1. Diabetes

What do the measurements of sugar level in blood (on empty stomach) mean?

- Less than 5.6 mmol/L (healthy)
- Between 5.6 - 6.9 mmol/L (pre-diabetic)
- More than 7.0 mmol/L (diabetic)

The conventional method of measuring one's sugar level is less accurate as it reflects reading at a particular point in time.

A more accurate measurement is HbA1c (in %), which is something that’s made when glucose (sugar) in your body enters RBC and binds to hemoglobin. Blood HbA1c levels are reflective of how well diabetes is controlled. It’s reflective of blood glucose levels over past 3 months and not daily ups and downs of blood glucose. However, note that the test may give misleading results in certain situations.

How do you interpret the readings?
- 4 - 5.6% (normal)
- 5.7 - 6.4% (pre-diabetic - higher chance of getting diabetes)
- More than 6.5% (diabetic)

RBC flow in our bloodstream. Carbo that is consumed will be converted into glucose, which also enters and moves in our bloodstream. Glucose (being a source of energy) needs to enter RBC so they can be carried into every cell in the body as nutrients for them.

(i) For glucose to enter RBC, it requires insulin. Pancreas is a gland that secretes insulin hormones to control blood sugar level in the body. Insulin acts like a key to bring glucose into RBC. If one does not have sufficient insulin, glucose is unable to go into RBC. Diabetes is a disease that happens when glucose cannot enter RBC i.e. excessive glucose is flowing in the bloodstream.

There are 3 types of diabetes. If you like to learn more, click on this link..
http://www.pingofhealth.com/2012/02/effects-of-ganoderma-lingzhi-on.html

(ii) RBC receptors (which receive insulin) is defective or less sensitive. In such cases, although you have sufficient insulin, but due to poor receptor function, RBC is unable to allow insulin to enter.

Being diabetic is not fatal. It is the complications arising from diabetes that make it life-threatening, such as:
- heart failure or heart attack
- kidney failure
- stroke
- blindness

There are 5 common types of anti-diabetic drugs. Click here to find out how they work and the long-term side effects:
http://www.pingofhealth.com/2019/06/exclusive-anti-diabetic-drugs-how-they.html

In general, the mechanisms of the drugs either:
(i) Stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin. The side effect is the pancreas may be destroyed in the long-term.
(ii) Stimulate the sensitivity of the receptors so that RBC can receive more glucose.
(iii) Stop the function of liver to convert carbo to glucose. The carbo which cannot be converted ends up in the intestines. Side effects include diarrhoea and bloating.

Insulin is produced by pancreas.  What cause pancreas to malfunction?
(i) Bacterial / viral infections, causing pancreas cells to die.
(ii) Free radicals oxidise pancreas cells, thereby leading to malfunction of pancreas cells.

Western drugs are not able to revive or protect pancreas cells.

How SH Products Work

(a) Lingzhi

How does Lingzhi work?
(i) Lingzhi is effective in strengthening immunity, therefore prevent pancreas from bacterial / viral infections.
Lingzhi being an anti-oxidant has powerful anti-free radical effect.
In other words, Lingzhi has the ability to protect the functions of pancreas and prevent the above-mentioned harm.
(ii) Lingzhi stimulates pancreas to regenerate more new cells.
(iii) Long-term consumption of Lingzhi helps produce healthier bone marrow, which produce better quality RBC, which reduce the problem of insulin resistance etc.

(b) Fiber

Jia Hor Fiber contains Digestion Resistant Maltodextrin. It has been awarded with 4 accreditations.
Click here for details of its benefits..
http://www.pingofhealth.com/2011/12/what-makes-new-generation-jia-hor-fibre.html

Combining Lingzhi with Jia Hor Fiber have the ability to delay conversion of starch to glucose and reduce the burden on the pancreas (as it is not being pressured to suddenly produce more insulin to handle the glucose). The glucose is converted gradually.

For patients with blood sugar reading of persistently above 10 mmol/L, it is recommended to take 2 sachets Fiber before each meal. This can help control the blood sugar level very well.

(c) Pollen

Even though Yung Kien Pollen is sweet, do not be concerned as it is the natural sweetness and not an added ingredient which would increase your blood sugar level. Pollen is good for the spleen. From TCM perspective, spleen helps to regulate the endocrine system and thus is good for your hormones, which help manage your diabetes.

Long-term injection of insulin is not good. The dose would get higher over time. Further, the insulin is sourced from pigs or cows and there's a risk of patients developing a reaction towards it.

Bottom line is, Western drugs do not cleanse our blood; the viscosity still remains high and full of toxins. Because of that, the kidneys have to work harder to filter the blood and the liver has to work harder to detoxify the body, thereby damaging both these organs in the long run. This explains why Lingzhi is so popular today because of its unique ability to do both the above functions.

2. Ageing

Ageing is due to free radicals (FR). Every metabolic activity in our body, including breathing, creates free radicals. The more FR you have, the older you look. The reason is FR oxidise body cells and kill them, and so make you look older. FR is an unstable molecule. In order to stabilise itself, it needs to rob an electron from a body cell. The more FR there are, the more injuries to body cells.

Lingzhi is a powerful anti-oxidant and thus is able to address the FR issue. Experiments have shown that taking Yung Kien Lingzhi for long-term keeps you youthful i.e. delays ageing.

To find out more on the 4 ways how Lingzhi eliminates free radicals, click on this link..
http://www.pingofhealth.com/2012/02/how-lingzhi-ganoderma-eliminates-free.html

3. Kidney Lesion

Kidney cells are easily affected by virus, bacteria and free radicals. We are born with approximately 1 million glomeruli in each kidney. It's not easy to regenerate new glomeruli if the damage is too severe. Kidney failure destroy patients' self-esteem and results in them having a low quality of life. That's why it's important to know how to take care of our kidney.

Lingzhi has the ability to prevent inflammation and death of glomeruli. Lingzhi also helps to regenerate more new kidney cells and has anti-free radical effect.

Exclusive: Target Lingzhi - YKK (Kidney)

Sunday, 10 May 2020

This article is from a talk by Taiwan nutritionist Ms Yu-Chi Cheng, in conjunction with the launch of YKK ("Shen Ji" Lingzhi) in Malaysia on 6 April 2020.

In our body, there are 3 main elimination channels - the wastes are expelled out through our sweat, urine and stools. In this detox process, our kidney plays a very important role as it's one of the main detox pipeline. It may seem like it's not a big deal as going to toilet is something we do everyday. But if the kidneys don't function properly, we will feel a lot of discomfort. Toxins which are stuck in the body will start to poison it.

YKK's main function is to take care of our kidney. If the kidney is healthy and it can flush out all the toxins, the rest of our body organs will also benefit and be healthy.

YKK is the first product derived from antelope Lingzhi. The main ingredient in YKK is lucidenic acid (one of the 200 types of ganoderic acid). The molecule size of lucidenic acid is extremely small and therefore, is able to easily penetrate into every body cell.

This lucidenic acid composition in YKK has received many patents and endorsements, including from China, Taiwan, EU, USA, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Functions and Benefits of YKK

1. Enhance kidney function

Our kidney is like a water purifier. On average, we drink about 2 litres of water a day. But our kidney has to filter about 200 litres of blood daily. After the age of 40, kidney function deteriorates by about 1% every year. Hence early kidney protection is very important, even when they are still healthy.

Experiment: 2 groups of healthy mice (simulating healthy humans) are (i) injected with stevia (sweetener) and (ii) injected with stevia and fed with YKK. The objective is to determine if YKK can increase the kidney's filtration capability (GFR) to excrete out the stevia.

Experiment result:
Top row: Even for mice with healthy kidney, the stevia still stays in the kidney after 60 mins (blue fluorescent colour is still bright).
Bottom row: For mice fed with YKK, the blue fluorescent colour has dimmed tremendously by 60 mins, indicating a faster renal metabolism rate, or better kidney function.
Bar graph: This experiment demonstrates that YKK effectively improves kidney's GFR function by 5 times.

Exclusive: Inflammation of the Kidney

Sunday, 6 January 2019

How well your kidney functions depends on the ability of the glomeruli. The glomeruli is part of a filtration system that can filter out excess albumin, creatinine, urea etc from your body. There are about 1 million glomeruli in each kidney.

What are the basic functions of a kidney?

1) Filter blood and remove waste.
2) Control body fluid balance and balance of electrolytes.
3) Produce renin and regulate blood pressure.
4) Produce erythropoietin hormones.

What are the usual tests for kidney?

a) Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) test.
b) Creatinine.
c) GFR (glomerular filtration rate).
d) Uric acid.

Please click on this link for details..
http://www.pingofhealth.com/2018/08/bits-bites-208-health-tcm-kidney-and.html

What cause chronic inflammation of the kidney?

a) 3-Highs (hypertension, high cholesterol and high blood glucose)
b) Auto-immune diseases such as lupus
c) Diet e.g. salty food
d) Medicines such as NSAIDs
e) Genetics
f) Stress.

If you don't address these causes, they will lead to inflammation that damage your kidney, causing them to shrink and finally chronic kidney failure.

Main Functions of Kidney

1. Filter the blood and remove wastes such as BUN and creatinine (refer below).
Dirty blood that goes into the kidney is cleansed by nephrons in the kidney. The fresh blood then goes back into circulation. The dialysis machines perform this function when kidneys of patients no longer have the ability to filter their blood.

2. Control body's fluid balance and regulate balance of electrolytes:

One of the symptoms of deteriorating kidney function is fluid retention, mostly in the lower part of the body. There are 2 kinds of water retention:
(i) In the area below abdomen.
(ii) Abnormal accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity (ascites). The most common cause is cirrhosis of the liver.

Minerals in our body carry electric charges. The balance of electrolytes are vital for normal functioning of the human body. Diarrhoea can cause an imbalance in the electrolytes.

(a) Calcium : Phosphorus should be in the ratio of 2 : 1.
If the presence of calcium is too high, it will cause calcification and hardening of arteries, leading to strokes or heart attacks.
If calcium depletes too much, you may get osteoporosis and your blood pressure may shoot up.

(b) Natrium (Sodium) : Potassium ratio
From TCM point of view, when kidney is damaged, one craves for salty food. By the same token, people who like to eat salty food will damage their kidneys eventually. People with high blood pressure like to eat salty food. When the level of potassium is higher, it can eliminate excessive sodium and thus keep the blood pressure down.

(c) pH value is maintained at 7.35 - 7.45.

3. Produce renin enzyme and regulate blood pressure. When you are under stress, renin level increases, and blood pressure increases.

4. Produce erythropoietin (EPO) hormones which stimulate the production of red blood cells by the bone marrow. People with anaemia have low EPO level.

---------------------------------

Causes of Kidney Damage

a) Drugs/medication, including usage of viagra.

b) Cold drinks. Drinking tap water (even though it is filtered) contributes to weakening the kidney (because it is yin in nature and depletes the kidney essence). It is better to drink boiled water. From TCM point of view, depletion of kidney essence can be seen from symptoms such as hair loss, hearing problem, tinnitus, teeth start to loosen and unable to stand for long.

c) Too much sex.

d) Salty food.

e) High blood pressure is one of the most common causes of kidney failure. That's because it can damage the arteries leading into the kidney and the glomeruli within the kidneys. Damage to either results in the kidney being unable to effectively filter waste from the blood. As a result, dangerous levels of fluids and wastes can accumulate, ultimately requiring dialysis or kidney transplant.

f) Infection or inflammation and auto-immune diseases e.g. SLE.

g) Obstruction of urinary tract due to enlarged prostate or kidney stones.

-----------------------------------

Symptoms of Weakening Kidney

Purplish coloured tongue.

Blood pressure reading is high, but the person feels normal. This is not due to hypertension disease. Rather, when the body is cold, the blood vessels constrict, hence blood pressure shoots up. ACE is the enzyme that controls our blood pressure. When you are cold, adrenal glands release ACE, which alerts your body to preserve the warmth by constricting the blood vessels, which increases blood pressure.

Needle-like pain at the sole of the feet.

- Body feels very cold or very hot. Under TCM theory, kidney is the body organ that adjusts the body temperature. When the kidney weakens, the body temperature can fluctuate out of control and you will suddenly feel too hot alternating with too cold.

- Reduced amount of urine despite drinking a lot of water, due to water retention problem - causing swelling of the legs, ankles and feet.

- Unexplained shortness of breath.

- Excessive drowsiness or fatigue.

- Persistent nausea, confusion, pain or pressure in the chest.

- Darker skin tone on the face.

- Limbs are weak - cannot stand for long.

---------------------------------

Western Medical Tests on kidney usually focus on checking:

(i) The kidney's ability to filter urea nitrogen (Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) test).

When we eat protein, it will be digested into amino acid, and converted to other usable materials by the liver. A process converts nitrogen from amino acid into ammonia, which is converted by the liver into urea (a chemical waste product). The urea travels from the liver to kidney to be passed out through urine. A healthy kidney can filter the urea and remove it from the blood and pass out through urine.

A BUN test normal range is 7 - 20 mg/dL (2.5 - 7.1 mmol/L). A person has kidney problem if his BUN reading is high. It means his kidney can no longer filter the waste of protein. You would notice that when the doctor finds you have kidney problem, he will stop you from taking too much protein.

But you cannot not take protein as 30% of your body is made up of protein, which is the basic building material to produce blood cells, hormones etc. Consider taking Jia Hor Soya Protein, as it gives no burden to your kidney.

(ii) Creatinine is a waste product from protein in your diet and normal breakdown of muscles in your body. People with kidney disease will have a higher level of creatinine in the blood. If creatinine is not eliminated, you will start to feel muscle aches. Normal range is 0.7 - 1.3 mg/dL (men) and 0.6 - 1.1 mg.dL (women).

(iii) GFR (glomerular filtration rate) test estimates how well the kidney is filtering blood (through glomerulus) to remove wastes and extra water. If the filtration capability is good, your kidney function is considered good. A GFR over 60 mL/min/1.73m2 is adequate. Normal GFR is above 90 and GFR below15 indicates kidney failure.

Consumption of too much drugs can cause GFR reading to fall very fast as the kidney has more burden to remove a lot of wastes such as the binders, fillers and colourings that form the drugs.

(iv) Uric acid test. People with weak kidney should not eat too much high uric acid food such as anchovies, peanuts, beans and internal organs. Normal range is 3.4-7 mg/dL for men and 2.4-6 mg/dL for women.

------------------------------------

Your health from your Eyes:

a) Clear demarkation between the black and white of eye - liver is healthy.

b) Bluish rim around black of eye - arteriosclerosis (hardening of arteries).

c) Lines all along iris - stress.

d) Yellowish layer on top of black of eye - high cholesterol. Feel heat on top of scalp when under the sun. Tend to doze off easily.

e) Blood stains on white of eye - liver heat and cannot sleep well.

f) Yellowish on white of eye - liver not healthy as cannot metabolise bilirubin. Also indication of fatty liver problem (liver is losing its function to eliminate oil).

--------------------------------------

The liver plays a critical role in metabolising uric acid, calcium etc before the kidney can pass them out through urine. If the functions of either the kidney or liver deteriorate and they have problem processing these chemicals, the uric acid will build up inside the body causing gout whereas calcium build-up in the blood will cause stones. Hence it is critical to maintain the detox ability of the liver and kidney.

----------------------------------------

If the liver is damaged, it is easier for Lingzhi to help repair the damage and generate new liver cells. Yung Kien Ganoderma has been accredited with liver protection ability by the Taiwan's Ministry of Health.
However, if the kidney is damaged, it is more difficult to rescue. It is harder for Lingzhi to help regrow new kidney cells.
