3 Ways to Take Care of Digestive Health Naturally

Wednesday, 20 November 2013

Your body's gastrointestinal system does far more than just digest your food. It also converts food into energy, absorbs essential nutrients and fights off bacteria to keep you healthy and strong.
Your digestive system is home to 70-80% of your body's immune system. So if you fill your guts with friendly bacteria, you can prevent all sorts of diseases, including cancer.

What can friendly/good bacteria do for you:
  • Help digest food and absorb nutrients.
  • Produce folic acid and vitamin B12 for healthy blood cells.
  • Stimulate production of immune cells on the intestinal walls.
  • Activate white blood cells that kill bad bacteria.
How to take care of your digestive health:
  • Stay hydrated. This ensures that your body can eliminate waste efficiently and prevent constipation.
  • Eat right. Consume more Fibre. Chew your food properly. Consider eating smaller portions so you don't overeat.
  • Stay physically active. Exercise may help with many minor digestive problems including bloating and constipation, and assist your body's digestive system to function more efficiently.
  • Eat probiotic-rich foods. Research has proven their efficacy in helping with diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease.
What to avoid:
  • Smoking. Smokers are at higher risk of developing acid reflux, heartburn, gastrointestinal cancers, peptic ulcers and Crohn's disease.
  • Drinking alcohol. Too much alcohol will aggravate your heartburn or diarrhea and may even cause liver problem.
  • Eating quickly or gulping food. This causes you to swallow excessive air into your tummy.
  • Eating too much fatty foods. High-fat foods take longer to digest and thus cause your stomach to produce more acid and irritate your digestive system.

Guest Blog: Top 10 Foods to Eat to Avoid Indigestion or Heartburn Problems

Wednesday, 14 August 2013

The previous night I had overindulged in a delicious buffet. At night, I experienced excruciating pain in my stomach. I was curled up like a snail in its shell. As tempting as it was, that session of overeating had given me an upset stomach and a very bad heartburn. In my effort to find a cure to my agony, I recalled the saying: Prevention is Better than Cure.  Through my research, I learnt how bigger meals require more acid to digest the food which in turn increases one’s chances of getting heartburn or indigestion.

That wasn't the first time I experienced such pain. I have very bad eating habits. Eating late in the day, eating on the run, overeating, drinking not enough water and skipping meals are regular occurrences. Consequently, I am troubled with indigestion and heartburn. I can easily blame my busy lifestyle for developing such habits, But then, I believe the type of food consumed plays an important role as well. For instance, eating plenty of fibre every day is considered extremely important to keep indigestion at bay.

There are various other habits and "foods" that one should consume to keep their digestive system healthy. I realize how common indigestion and heartburn problems are, and as such, share below an infographic to help you inculcate a healthier eating habit..

How 1 Simple Problem Blows Out of Proportion

Monday, 5 November 2012

Here is an all-too-real horror story of how a simple complaint ends up with 7 medications.

A lady in her 80s is still very healthy. She has never taken regular medication. One year ago, she had trouble sleeping, so she went to see a doctor. That visit changed her life, so to speak.

The doctor prescribed amitriptyline to help her sleep. It has a sedative effect. Unfortunately, the side-effects are many, including urinary incontinence, blurred vision, dry mouth and constipation.

Because of the side effects, she visited the doctor many times over the next few months complaining of these symptoms. What did the doctor do? Gave her medications. The doctor prescribed her a drug to help her urinary problem, some drops for her eyes and 2 types of laxative.

One morning, while over-sedated from the initial sleeping pill, she fell and fractured her hip. She had to undergo a hip operation. After her hip was fixed, the surgeons gave her medication to strengthen her bones. It caused her heartburn. Guess what? The doctor gave her more medications to treat that.

And to think that it all started because she had trouble sleeping.

What's the moral of the story?

Stop the increasing reliance on drugs to address lifestyle factors. Because eventually, taking one medication can lead to another and another. Instead, look for alternatives. Choose something which is not only Effective, but also very Safe for long-term consumption. And has No Side Effects.

Choose Shuang Hor products, because we ensure our products meet all these 3 criteria before we bring them to you. Therefore, you can consume them with peace of mind. Email me at laifuiping@gmail.com if you know of friends whom you like to help.

Heartburn: Causes and How to Prevent It

Thursday, 5 January 2012

Heartburn is a burning sensation that is felt in the chest and throat, which occurs when the acid from our stomach travels back into the esophagus. The person suffering from heartburn may also experience a sour and acidic taste in the mouth.

If you suffer from heartburn / acid reflux more than 2 times a week, this is known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).

Causes of Acid Reflux

1) Many pregnant women experience acid reflux symptoms due to some of these reasons:-
  • In their 3rd trimester of pregnancy, due to increased levels of hormones that "soften" the ligaments that normally keep the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) tight thereby causing the acid to flow up.
  • The larger uterus during pregnancy causes the organs in the abdomen to be pushed up against the diaphragm, resulting in acid reflux, as the physical integrity of the LES is affected.
  • The extra weight gained during pregnancy around the waist often presses on the abdomen and increases the pressure inside. This pressure may force food up into the esophagus.
2) Hiatus hernia condition, which pushes part of the stomach up through the diaphragmatic hiatus.

3) People who overeat, or consume spicy and oily food, as well as acidic food. Food that may aggravate acid reflux symptoms include peppermint, chocolate, tomatoes, onions, fatty foods, coffee, tea and citrus fruit juices.

4) People who consume alcohol in large amounts.

5) People who consume certain medications.

How to Prevent Heartburn
  • Eat smaller but more frequent meals.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Wear loose and less restrictive clothes.
  • Elevate the head of your bed and sleep on your left side.
  • Reduce intake of alcohol.
  • Stop smoking.
