5 Common Health Problems with Nails

Sunday, 15 January 2023

We usually don't pay much attention to our fingernails or toenails unless they give us problem. Then we start googling for help, right? In this post, I like to share 5 common problems and how you can treat them.

1. Nails that are soft, thin, brittle, and break easily - called onychoschizia.

Cause: Repeatedly wetting and drying the nails eg. if you do a lot of washing or swim regularly.

Treatment: Protect them by using moisturisers and wearing rubber gloves.

Less common cause: Iron deficiency or underlying illnesses.

Treatment: Get a blood test done and take iron supplements.

My story

I used to suffer from this problem regularly - my fingernails would crack and I would have to be very careful to not aggravate the crack until the nail grows back. I would wrap the nail with a band-aid if the break-line was deep. Very irritating and inconvenient. Much to my surprise, after taking Yung Kien Pollen for a period of time, I noticed I no longer suffer from that. Perhaps it's due to the complete range of vitamins and minerals in Yung Kien Pollen that replenishes the deficiency. Whatever it may be, I am just grateful not to be troubled by that anymore.

2. Dented nails with little pits in them. Nail colour may change to yellow or brown, some bleeding may occur under the nail or nail is separated from nail bed.

Cause: Nail psoriasis.

Treatment: Dermatologist may treat with corticosteroid cream, steroid injections, tazarotene for nail pitting an discolouration, calcipotriol for build-up of skin under the nail or laser treatment.

I highly recommend you to look at an alternative solution called Lingzhi / Ganoderma - click on this article:

3. Yellow coloured nails which are thick and break off easily.

Cause: Nail fungal infection. Higher risk for people who sweat a lot, go around barefooted in wet locker rooms, or go for manicures and pedicures.

Treatment: Doctor may prescribe anti-fungals or fully remove your nail, which will grow back.

4. Very thick and hard toenail, almost like a horn - called onychorgryphosis.

Cause: Genetics, or injury to that toenail, poor blood circulation, psoriasis or a skin condition called ichthyosis.

Treatment: A podiatrist or dermatologist can help to cut the nail. The only permanent treatment is to remove the nail bed completely. Let that be the last resort - explore other options first.

5. Ingrown toenail, which can cause pain, swelling and become infected.

Cause: Genetics or not keeping the nails trimmed neatly, wearing tight socks or shoes, or physical injury.

Treatment: Soak nails in warm water 3 to 4 times a day, wear comfortable shoes, keep feet dry. If nothing works, you may need surgery.

Wednesday, 5 August 2015

Please email askfuiping@gmail.com to buy Lingzhi / Ganoderma and Bee Pollen to handle your feet problem.

Our feet are one of the most overlooked parts of our body. We tend to brush aside many feet problems, thinking they are something minor. Do you know feet symptoms can be an indicator of serious health conditions?

Take a careful look at your feet now. Do you notice any of these abnormal signs? If yes, they could be symptoms for potentially serious diseases and you should quickly do something about them before it's too late. Here is the list..

1. Cold Feet
The constant feeling of cold in your feet that makes you wear socks day and night, regardless of weather. Do you also suffer from hair loss, fatigue, weight gain, moodiness and dry skin?

Potential condition:
Hypothyroidism, where your thyroid gland is not producing enough hormones to keep your body cells functioning normally.

2. Frequent Cramps
Pins and needles feelings, or severe muscle contractions in calves or toes.

Potential condition:
Dehydration.
Potassium, calcium and magnesium deficiencies.
Blood circulation problems.
Nerve damage caused by diabetes.

3. Painful Large Toe
Acute pain at the big toe that wakes you up at night.

Potential condition:
Gout, when there's too much uric acid in your body. Avoid high-purine foods like tomatoes and anchovies.

4. Pain at the Heel
Sharp shooting pain at your heel every time your foot touches the ground.

Potential condition:
Plantar fasciitis, where the ligament supporting your foot arch is strained and inflamed, possibly caused by excessive walking on hard surfaces and wearing worn-out shoes with poor arch support.

5. Stubborn Sores
Sores that begin as a minor cut or blister that do not heal.

Potential condition:
Diabetes.
Peripheral arterial disease, which results from poor blood circulation.

6. Numbness
When you poke your feet with something sharp, there could be no sensation.

Potential condition:
Peripheral neuropathy caused by diabetes, chemotherapy or alcoholism.

7. Burning Feet

Potential condition:
Diabetes with peripheral nerve damage.
Vitamin B deficiency.
Chronic kidney disease.
Hypothyroidism.

8. Itchy, Peeling Skin
Potential condition:
Eczema or psoriasis.
Athlete's foot caused by fungal condition.

9. Hairless Feet and Toes
Hair on your toes indicates that you are getting enough blood circulation. Bald toes could bring bad news.

Potential condition:
Insufficient blood being pumped into your extremities, which suggest heart disease.

10. Abnormally-shaped Toe Nails
Potential condition:
Whitish nails can be caused by injury, infection or psoriasis, liver disease, heart problems or diabetes.
Pitting or yellowing nails - psoriasis.
Spoon-shaped or concave nails - anaemia.
Clubbed nails (curve downwards at the ends) - lung disease, heart disease or gastrointestinal problems.

11. Swollen Feet
Potential condition:
Water retention.
Poor circulation.
Lymphatic disease.
Kidney problems.
Under active thyroid.

When you get persistent warning signals from your feet, you shouldn't ignore them. Get them checked. They are telling you stories that something is wrong, so do something before it's too late.
