Exclusive: Seminar by Dr Hseu Ruey-Shyang: Part 6 - Lingzhi and Liver Protection Function

Wednesday, 11 January 2017

This is the final part of Dr Hseu's lecture on "Lingzhi and Modern Medical Science"..

When we eat and drink and breath as part of our metabolic activities, we inevitably introduce into our inner system some substances that are undesirable, something that we call "rubbish metabolites".

Where are these metabolites processed?
They are processed in the liver. Being one of the largest organs in our body, liver is also the most important detoxification plant. Almost everything that cannot be further broken down is eventually processed in the liver. When this ultimate detoxification centre  takes in something that it cannot deal with and causes havoc in it, it becomes ill, which is generally manifested as hepatitis.

Hepatitis takes on one of 3 forms:

1) Virus hepatitis
This is infection by hepatitis A, B, C, D or E virus. Each of these infects the body in a different mode. While some are transmitted through the mouth, others through blood transfusion etc. Whatever the mode of infection, they invariably lead to inflammation of the liver.

Exclusive: Seminar by Dr Hseu Ruey-Shyang: Part 5 - Lingzhi for Immune Modulation

Sunday, 8 January 2017

This is a continuation of Dr Hseu's lecture on "Lingzhi and Modern Medical Science"..

Everyone longs to be healthy and remain healthy.
What is the first line of defence of our health?
It is the immune system in us. This is the system that protects our body and guards our inner environment against the invasion of external threats. It helps us to fight against contagious diseases and reduce the population of variant cells, or cancerous cells. At times, however, our immune system can also over react and trigger allergic responses.

We are able to continue with our daily activities because we have this immune system to constantly ward off the attacks of pathogenic bacteria from an external source. Such being the case, learning how to fortify our immune system or to strengthen our immunity is the first option towards alternative approaches of attaining optimal health.

Our immune system is made up of specific and non-specific immune cells which are circulating in our bloodstream and in other body fluids, on the look out for foreign bodies or abnormal cells. Complement or addiment protein is a unique kind of protein present in our blood serum. It is commissioned with the special task of "labelling". Whenever it stumbles across bacteria of external source or abnormal cells it will imprint labels on them indicating that they are undesirable or harmful elements. These labels will attract the phagocytes, natural killer cells (NKC), neutrophils and other immune cells to gobble up, confront, attack and destroy those undesirable or harmful elements hence preventing further damage done to the body.

Exclusive: Seminar by Dr Hseu Ruey-Shyang: Part 4 - Government Definition of Lingzhi

Wednesday, 4 January 2017

This is a continuation of Dr Hseu's lecture on "Lingzhi and Modern Medical Science"..

What is the precise definition of Lingzhi? What exactly does Lingzhi mean?

Dr Hseu had the opportunity to attend the 7th National Medicinal Fungus Convention held in Xiamen, China in 1998. It was called Medicinal Fungus, which was referring to fungus that have medicinal functions. This would include Lingzhi, cordyceps sinensis, Yun Zhi etc. However, three quarters of the thesis that were discussed during the convention were mainly focused on Lingzhi. Therefore, it can be seen that the level of importance attached to Lingzhi has not fallen since 1960s on applications to human body even until to-date. At the end of the convention, the final concrete conclusions drawn were announced by the Chairman - Lingzhi possess the following practical medicinal effects:

1) For cancer patients with tumour growth in their bodies when undergoing radiotherapy or chemotherapy, it can work as an auxiliary remedy. In other words, the incorporation of Lingzhi in radio or chemotherapy can help achieve better therapeutic results, more stable conditions of the patients, and even an increased chance of recovery and survival.

Exclusive: Seminar by Dr Hseu Ruey-Shyang: Part 3 - 10 Therapeutic Effects of Lingzhi

Sunday, 1 January 2017

This is a continuation of Dr Hseu's lecture on "Lingzhi and Modern Medical Science"..

From what Dr Hseu has shown us about the 4 main active-ingredients of Lingzhi in Part 2 - Major Constituents of Lingzhi, he has compiled the top 10 therapeutic effects of the representatives of Red Ganoderma - G.Tsugae and Reishi.

He has only listed 10 main therapeutic effects because the medicinal properties of Lingzhi are wide-ranging and not yet exhaustive.

1) Lingzhi imparts analgesic (pain relieving) and calmative (mind relaxing) benefits to the central nervous system. This function is derived from Adenosine.
What is the basis of this finding?

Through experiments conducted on mice. Mice are always hyperactive. However, having been administered with Lingzhi, they would sleep quietly. This is even better than sleeping pills as it could calm the mind in a beneficial way.

Exclusive: Seminar by Dr Hseu Ruey-Shyang: Part 2 - Major Constituents of Lingzhi

Wednesday, 28 December 2016

This is a continuation of Dr Hseu's lecture on "Lingzhi and Modern Medical Science".

How the Active Constituents in Lingzhi were Discovered

During the 1950s and 1960s, the Chinese had made use of various Lingzhi formulations, which were prepared either by liquefying Lingzhi or by concocting it with alcohol. The local folks used these preparations as healing remedy for all kinds of ailments. This was a common medicinal practice that was adopted by the China folks during 1950s and 1960s, which was later recorded and reported in articles or documentary records. When scientists from other countries subsequently read such records, they were impressed by the various therapeutic functions of Lingzhi, and fascinated by its miraculous effects in treating cardiovascular diseases, respiratory illnesses, disorders in liver functions etc. They recognise that Lingzhi possesses unique features that are exclusive to its own and therefore began to engage in systematic study on Lingzhi.

The first constituent of Lingzhi, polysaccharide, was found and extracted from G.Applanatum by Japanese scholars in 1971. Why was it from G.Applanatum and not Reishi? The reason is that in 1971, artificial cultivation technology of Lingzhi was not fully developed yet, therefore extraction of Lingzhi was mainly done from wild-grown Lingzhi. G.Applanatum were more easily found in the wilderness in comparison to Reishi, therefore it was widely used in Lingzhi researches.

In 1979, Chinese scholars have successfully discovered macromolecular polysaccharide in Lingzhi.

Subsequently in 1982, Japanese scholars had successfully extracted triterpenoids. or ganoderic acids from Lingzhi. There is an interesting story behind the discovery of triterpenoids. Japanese like to eat sweet stuff, while Lingzhi is bitter in taste. Therefore, they racked their brains trying to get rid of the bitterness. When the bitter taste was successfully precipitated, the residue structure was brought to the attention of researchers specialising in cellular structure. This was how they hit the jackpot of triterpenoids discovery.

Exclusive: Seminar by Dr Hseu Ruey-Shyang: Part 1 - Lingzhi History and Background

Sunday, 25 December 2016

Dr Hseu Ruey-Shyang is a Professor from the Agrochemistry Faculty at Taiwan National University. He gave a talk in Singapore on the topic of "Lingzhi and Modern Medical Science". He imparted his personal insight of what he has gained in the past 20 years through reading Lingzhi's historical articles, his participation in various Lingzhi researches, and several conclusions that he has compiled throughout the years.

I have transcripted his talk into Six Parts, which I will share with you over the next few weeks.

Dr Hseu began cultivating Lingzhi at home since 1981. He completed his doctorate thesis in 1990 and was the first Chinese to present a thesis on Lingzhi. During that process, he was exposed to different perceptions about Lingzhi and continue to learn about it anew. In 1995, he began his Lingzhi genetic research, which is also commonly known as DNA analysis. After 1995, he confined his Lingzhi research from the past macroscopic view to a microscopic view and analysis at the molecular level.

The Chinese's understanding of Lingzhi dates back to 2,000 years ago. Nonetheless, Lingzhi has a well-known scientific name, which is Ganoderma Lucidum. Strictly speaking, this scientific name made its first appearance in 1889 A.D. In other words, it was about 100 years ago when Westerners gave Lingzhi its scientific name in Latin. Looking at this time gap, the Chinese had learned about Lingzhi more than a thousand years ahead of Westerners.

If you want to find out whether a fungus is a species of Lingzhi or not, there are a few parts that we must look at. Firstly, observe its cross-section, which is very different from other ordinary mushrooms. It is formed by countless cylindrical tubes, which are closely tied up with one another, constituting what we call tubule layer.
