Effective Natural Remedy for Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Friday 30 November 2012

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a long-term disease that leads to inflammation of the intestines and damages the intestinal lining. Ulcers may form, resulting in bleeding.

The various Types of IBD include:

1. Crohn's disease (CD)
It can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, from the mouth to the anus. It is more common in men. Complications from CD can develop, including:
  • Fistulas (abnormal openings between parts of the intestine, or between the intestine and another organ, such as the bladder or skin).
  • Obstruction or rupture in the small intestine or colon
  • Skin rashes
  • Arthritis.
2. Ulcerative colitis (UC)
It affects only the colon and rectum. It affects both genders equally.

3. Allergic colitis (AC).
It occurs in infants and young children, due to allergies to cow's milk, egg, soy or wheat. It usually occurs concurrently with asthma, eczema and hay fever.

Causes of IBD

The underlying cause is still unknown despite a large amount of research into it. Experts believe IBD is caused by a combination of factors such as:

1. Genetics
Research suggests that for people with IBD, there is a gene which mutates, causing the body to react abnormally to microbes like bacteria, viruses or protein in food.

2. Immune system
Many immunological abnormalities have been described in patients with IBD, even though none have been shown to be the main causative factor.

3. Environment
Cigarette smoke or the spread of bacteria or viruses can trigger an ongoing immune system response, or aggravate the disease. These environmental factors can damage the intestinal lining directly, triggering the start of the disease or accelerate its development.

4. Diet
An unhealthy diet can worsen symptoms.

Symptoms of IBD
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Blood in stools
  • Anaemia caused by blood loss through stools
  • Loss of appetite
  • Lethargy
  • Weight loss
  • Fever
  • Recurrent mouth ulcers that are difficult to heal
  • Inflammation in the eyes or skin
IBD may stunt a child's growth, due to nutrient loss. Hence, proper treatment must be given.
