Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis Explained

Sunday 30 October 2011

Arthritis literally means joint inflammation. It is used to refer to diseases that cause problems within the joint capsule. There are more than 100 types of arthritis affecting people of all ages.

Osteoarthritis is the most common chronic degenerative arthritis. It most often affects the hands, knees and spine. There is a gradual loss of cartilage from the joints, causing increased stress to the bones, and the sufferers will feel pain when the joints are moving. Morning stiffness, if present, lasts less than 30 minutes. Joint swelling can occur, either as a result of fluid accumulation or due to the growth of osteophytes or bone spurs.

One of the main components of cartilage is collagen. Click here to find out what is collagen and why is it important for our health and beauty. Our body needs to build cartilage at the same rate as it's wearing down in order to maintain healthy joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease, meaning our body's immune system begins attacking the cartilage and synovial lining of the joint. This unbalanced inflammatory process causes significant destruction of healthy tissue. It starts insidiously with fatigue, muscle pain and fever and eventually affects our joints, making them painful, swollen and feel stiff. Morning stiffness is prolonged and lasts more than 1 hour.

Exercise is strongly encouraged for arthritis sufferers. Strengthening exercises help to improve joint stability and thus reduce pain. Endurance exercises improve cardiovascular fitness and help feelings of fatigue.

Low impact exercises such as swimming and riding a bicycle are recommended.
Start at a low intensity and for a short time. It is normal to feel some joint or muscle soreness after exercising. But if the pain lasts more than 1 day, the exercise was probably too long or too vigorous.

Treatment

It is important to note that the destruction of the cartilage in both of these diseases arises from oxidative stress.

The basic traditional treatment of both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis is painkillers such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and aspirin. While these drugs reduce inflammation in joints, they cause many side effects like stomach ulcers and upper-gastrointestinal bleeding

In other words, these drugs merely provide pain relief without attacking the underlying cause of the disease - oxidative stress. Antioxidants is your solution to neutralize oxidative stress. For how to increase your body's level of antioxidants, please check out this Article on The Secret Of How To Delay Aging - Antioxidants.

Cervical Cancer - Some Fantasies and Myths

Wednesday 26 October 2011

This is a very difficult form of cancer to handle emotionally. It's not something we are comfortable to talk openly about, sometimes arising out of certain misconceptions. It takes a lot of courage to seek support because it attacks the organ of our body that makes us female, our reproductive organ.

Here, we consider some widespread beliefs about cervical cancer, as sourced from consultant clinical oncologist and radiotherapist Dr Manivannan A. B., consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Liew Fah Onn, the United States National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. and the University of Michigan.

MYTH #1 : Cervical cancer cannot be prevented.
REALITY :
Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. There are HPV vaccination against the 2 most common strains of HPV virus (HPV-16 and HPV-18) to reduce your chances of getting infected. However, those who are vaccinated should still continue to go for regular Pap smears to detect infection from other strains of HPV.
Earliest signs of cervical cancer include unusual bleeding, especially in between periods or after sexual intercourse.

MYTH #2 : I do not have a family history of cervical cancer.
REALITY :
Unlike breast cancer, cervical cancer is not hereditary. Therefore, you are not at lower risk even though none of your family members has the disease.

MYTH #3 : I'm too young.
REALITY :
Even women in their 20s can develop cervical cancer.

MYTH #4 : I'm not promiscuous.
REALITY :
Even women in monogamous relationships can still develop cervical cancer.

MYTH #5 : I must have my uterus removed if I am diagnosed with cervical cancer. I won't be able to have children after treatment.
REALITY :
Treatment depends on the stage of the cancer.
If cancer is detected in early stages, cancerous growths can be removed by minor surgery.
If cancer is detected in later stages or it has spread, radiotherapy and hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) may be needed. Only women who have undergone both these procedures won't be able to conceive.

Hence, Effective Prevention is absolutely crucial.

Breast Cancer: Some Fantasies and Myths

Tuesday 25 October 2011

This is a very difficult form of cancer to handle emotionally. It takes a lot of courage to seek support because it attacks the organ of our body that makes us female. There are many awareness campaigns to educate women and their loved ones to help them cope better.

Here, we explore some common myths about breast cancer, as sourced from consultant clinical oncologist and radiotherapist Dr Manivannan A. B., consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Liew Fah Onn, the United States National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. and the University of Michigan.

MYTH #1 :
Only women with a family history of breast cancer are at risk.
REALITY :
Over 85% of women diagnosed with breast cancer do not have a family history of it.
Factors that increase your risk include:
- as you age
- your periods start before 12 years old
- your periods stop after 55 years old
- personal history of cancerous changes in your breast

MYTH #2 :
Wearing an under wire bra increases your risk of getting breast cancer.
REALITY :
There is no sufficient evidence to support this claim. The same goes for claims about deodorants and antiperspirants, and drinking from a plastic water bottle left in a hot car.

MYTH #3:
Breast cancer always comes in the form of a lump in the breast.
REALITY :
Early signs of breast cancer differs between individuals. The other signs include:
- swelling
- skin dimpling (a dimple in the breast)
- inverted nipple
- nipple discharge

MYTH #4 :
Herbal remedies and dietary supplements can help treat breast cancer.
REALITY :
Dr Manivannan is of the view there are no herbal remedies or dietary supplements that have been scientifically proven to treat breast cancer.

On the other hand, please read this article on How Does Nutritional Supplements Prevent Cancer?
Hence, Effective Prevention is absolutely crucial.

Positive Effects of Lingzhi/Ganoderma on Cancer Patients

Monday 24 October 2011

Dr. Hiroshi Kawai from Kinki University reported that taking Lingzhi/Ganoderma together with chemotherapy may have significant results for patients who have had surgery for breast cancer, colon cancer and gastric cancer. Below are some of the findings.

The experimental subjects were patients who were treated improperly after surgery, and patients who were suffering from the side effects of chemotherapy.

1) After a mastectomy (surgical removal of one or both breasts), one patient's face turned "gloomy". After taking Lingzhi for 2 months, her facial complexion improved.

2) Another patient's limbs became paralyzed and swollen after a mastectomy. After consuming Lingzhi for 1 month, the numbness significantly improved.

3) Some patients used Lingzhi together with some herbal medicines for 10 days after a colostomy (an opening from the colon to provide alternative channel for feces to leave the body). Night sweats disappeared and appetites improved.

4) Some patients who had gastric cancer operation lost their appetites. When 6 capsules of Lingzhi were taken each day, their appetites improved.

In view of the above results, we can see that Lingzhi taken with chemotherapy can be a valuable auxiliary treatment. Side effects of chemotherapy can be reduced.

8 Reasons Why We Need To Take Supplements Even Though We Eat "Natural Food"

Sunday 23 October 2011

In the days of past, if we consciously adopt a healthy diet, we could get away without taking any supplements as the natural food would be able to give us all the nutrients our body needs to perform its myriad of functions. Unfortunately, things have changed.

Here are 8 reasons why we need to take supplements even though we eat "natural food" and consider ourself healthy:

1. Soil Depletion
In agriculture, there is a responsible way to utilize the soil and plant the crops so it will not deplete the soil off all its nutrients over long-term. Unfortunately, we consumers usually do not know where our vegetables (organic or otherwise) come from and whether the farmers plan and practice a responsible planting system.

2. Use of Pesticides
Pesticides are chemical or biological substances intended for preventing, destroying or controlling any pests. Pests include insects, weeds or microbes that destroy property or spread disease. Although there are benefits to the use of pesticides, some have drawbacks, when used carelessly or excessively. They cause harm to the health of humans and other animals. According to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, 9 of the 12 most dangerous and persistent organic chemicals are pesticides.

3. Genetically Modified Food
GMO is genetically modified organism (plant or animal), which have specific changes introduced to their DNA by genetic engineering techniques. The most widely grown GMO crops include corn, soybeans and cotton seed oil. Their DNA are manipulated to make them insect resistant and herbicide tolerant. As such, they are not natural anymore. The safety of GMOs in the foodchain is still being controversially debated. Hence, we have to consider carefully whether to consume GMO foods.

4. Food Irradiation
The shelf life of meat, chicken, fruits and vegetables need to be extended to allow for export of these food to far-off countries and to last all the way until they reach our doorstep. Gamma radiation is often used to kill living organisms, in a process called irradiation. In this case, gamma rays are used to kill the decay-causing bacteria from many foods or prevent the bacteria from growing on our fruit and vegetables to maintain freshness and flavor.

5. Commercial Processing of Food
In our fast paced lifestyle nowadays, many working families purchase and eat processed food regularly, ranging from fast foods to canned foods. Such meals are easy to prepare and do not take much time. Obviously, a lot of nutrients are lost in the processing, not to mention the introduction of harmful ingredients in the form of preservatives, flavorings and colorings.

6. Storage and Transportation
The longer the time required to store and transport the natural food, the more preservatives will be used to maintain their freshness. For example, the layer of wax applied to apples is very difficult to completely remove despite careful washing. Another example - to cater to the consumers' fondness of eating live fishes, during the process of transporting them, chemical substances are used to slow down their movement so they do not hurt themselves or die. These very chemicals are still in the fish when we eat them.

7. Home Storage of Food
Many working families can only do their marketing of "fresh foods" in the weekends. Needless to say, vegetables cooked on Mondays are of higher quality than those which have been stored in the fridge and are only cooked on Fridays. The important nutrients have been gradually depleted during the storage.

8. Cooking of Food
Heat kills a lot of nutrients. We have a tendency to overcook our food. For example, a fish that is deep fried has less nutrients than a fish that is steamed. Unfinished food are kept in the fridge and then re-heated or re-cooked for the next meal. Much nutrients are lost in the process of cooking. Hence, it is important to include raw foods in our daily diet.

Conclusion

We know how important it is to get sufficient nutrients, and preferably nutrients from natural food. But do we actually do it? Even if we want to, it is sometimes very difficult, for the reasons above.

Fortunately, there is an easy way out - boost up with a good supplement source. The most natural supplement I know is bee pollen, as it is "manufactured" by the bees and flowers. Check out this article which discusses 10 important reasons why you should choose Yung Kien bee pollen.

Probiotics: Benefits and Important Features

Sunday 16 October 2011

Do you know there are 400 to 500 types of bacteria living in our gastrointestinal (GI) tract? They all compete for the limited space and food inside our digestive system.

When there are more "good guys" than "bad guys", then all is balanced, everybody lives in harmony and we are well. But if we're sick, stressed out, eat lots of unhealthy food or take antibiotics, the balance of our GI flora will be affected. That's where good probiotics come in.

What are the Benefits of Probiotics?

Probiotics are friendly, good bacteria residing in our GI tract. They contribute many benefits, including:

1) Strengthen the immune functions in our GI system by regulating the ecological harmony of the different colonies of bacteria.
2) Put in place an environment which is conducive for the growth of beneficial bacteria. This sort of environment is acidic in nature, which discourages the growth of harmful bacteria.
3) Boost up our immune system thereby reducing the risk of colorectal cancer (as there are less bad bacteria in our system). They also improve the conditions of vaginal infections and urinary tract infections.
4) Reduce the symptoms of eczema and other allergic reactions (asthma, sinus etc).
5) Convert lactose into lactic acid which become food for the good bacteria. Hence, lactose intolerant people can now have increased tolerance on dairy products and reduce the incidences of diarrhea.
6) Prevent and improve constipation problem as it stimulates the peristalsis movement in our intestines.
7) Promote synthesis of vitamins and production of enzymes, thereby aiding in digestion.
8) Reduce cholesterol level.

Many people use probiotics to prevent diarrhea, gas and cramping caused by antibiotics. Antibiotics kill both the good and bad bacteria. A decrease in beneficial bacteria may lead to digestive problems. Taking probiotics helps replace the lost beneficial bacteria, therefore plays a role to prevent diarrhea.

Types of Probiotics in the Market

There are many types of probiotics products in the market, giving varying levels of effectiveness. Generally, a good probiotic should be able to safely pass through 2 main hurdles to reach our intestines so it can do its job:

a) our body heat of 37 degrees celsius. If it can't, it will be destroyed the moment we put it into our mouth.
b) the very acidic gastric juice in our stomach which has a pH level of 1 or 2 and the bile juice.

The secret is in "coating" the probiotics with the appropriate "protective shield" to keep them safe. Probiotics that do not undergo any coating process with be intolerant to heat and acid and have a short shelf life (as they do not have any food to eat). They are normally kept in the fridge to stay alive.

Probiotics which are coated in capsule form are harder to dissolve and also have a short shelf life. They may be less effective as the bacteria are trapped inside the capsule and unable to do their job.

Microcapsule probiotics generally use gel to coat. They do last longer but takes as long as 6 hours to dissolve and are not so stable.

Probiotics coated using the multi-coated technique is the best. They are coated with food supply for these probiotics so they can successfully go to our GI tract and also have a longer lifespan as they have food to eat. As they can adhere to our colon, they have time to multiply and stay in our GI tract for longer period. They are more stable and are not affected by our body heat. Further, they have been trained to increase their tolerance against gastric acid and bile salt.

  • The person did not take Lingzhi regularly or he didn't follow the recommended dosage.
  • The person stopped taking when vertigo reactions occurred.
  • The diet, exercise and lifestyle of this person is not well regulated.
  • The person has suffered from an illness for a very long time or too many chemical drugs have been used. The toxins within the body need a longer time to be fully discharged.

Diabetes: Side Effects and Symptoms of Insulin Injection

Thursday 13 October 2011

It is said that once you have diabetes, your life will forever be entangled with it. Fortunately, there have been many stories on how Lingzhi has successfully cured diabetic cases. For more info, check out this article on Diabetes is No More a Dreaded Disease: The Role of Ganoderma.

Insufficient insulin secretion is one of the causes of diabetes, and this results in some serious complications. Currently, Western physicians use insulin injections as a popular treatment method. Though insulin is able to lower blood sugar level, the problem is still there. Furthermore, just like a cortisone hormone injection, it entails many side effects.

Side Effects of Insulin Injection and the Symptoms

Too much insulin can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
Symptoms: cold sweat, shaking, dizziness, sudden changes in behaviour or mood, headache, numbness around the mouth, pale skin, hunger, rapid heart rate, weakness, headache and fainting which, if untreated, may lead to slurred speech and other behaviour that resemble drunkenness.

Too little insulin can cause high blood sugar (hyperglycemia).
Symptoms: confusion, drowsiness, shortness of breathe, fruity breath odor, increased urination, extreme hunger, upset stomach and vomiting, blurred vision or extreme thirst.

Allergic reaction to insulin drugs.
Symptoms: rash, itching or swelling at injection site, changes in the feel of your skin, dizziness, trouble breathing.

Insulin is unable to recover pancreas function. Worse, it speeds up the ageing of the organ.

Solution

Over the years, Medical Research Institute of Kinki University found through experiments that Lingzhi has similar function as insulin. Accordingly, after taking Lingzhi, not only can insulin deficiency be supplemented, but it can also make the pancreas regain its original function

In addition it does not have side effects like insulin injections do. Curing diabetic condition without the need of injection is a feature that makes Lingzhi miraculous.

Diabetes is No More A Dreaded Disease: The Role of Ganoderma

Monday 10 October 2011

Human cells need sugar (glucose) as their energy source. Glucose can only enter the cells if it has a "key", which is insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by beta cells in the pancreas.

What results in high blood glucose level?
- when insulin (the key) in the blood is insufficient.
- when insulin cannot "open the doors" to the cells.
- when beta cells die, causing insufficient amount of insulin to be produced.

Diagnosis of Diabetes
- when fasting (before meal) blood glucose exceed 130 mg/dl (7 mmol/l)
- when postprandial (after meal) blood glucose exceed 180 mg/dl (10 mmol/l)

Classification of Diabetes

Type 1 - insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (congenital)
- usually takes place in childhood between ages of 10 and 14.
- possible causes - virus invasion, chemical medicine, autoimmunity.
- patients are dependent on insulin supplementation for the rest of their lives, as their beta-cells are unable to produce insulin.

Type 2 - non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (maturity-onset or acquired)
- affects 90% of diabetic patients.
- characterized by high blood glucose in the context of insulin resistance (insulin become less effective in lowering blood sugar) and relative insulin deficiency.

Gestational diabetes
- affects 2% to 3% of women during pregnancy.

The Role of Ganoderma

Controlling diabetes requires great patience and persistence. Dietary restraint is the most important step to control diabetes. Regardless, Lingzhi/Ganoderma plays an important role. Here are some supporting scientific research results:

Animal Testing

Prof. Zhi-Bin Lin of Beijing Medical University found evidence on the ability of ganoderma to:
- protect pancreatic function of mice.
- prolong the lifespan of beta-cells, as it is effective in eliminating free radicals.
Hence, ganoderma is potent in diabetes prevention and treatment. A general rule derived from past experience is that, the lower the dosage being used, the longer time it takes to see the effects.

A diabetic patient is unable to control his blood glucose levels and hence constantly feels hungry. However, if he eats too much, his blood glucose will rise. Therefore, blood glucose modulation is essential for diabetic patients. Japanese researchers, Kimura et al, has found that ganoderma is effective in reducing excessive blood sugar. It is observed that low dosage of ganoderma is not effective in critical situations such as "acute blood glucose toxicity".

Clinical Trials (on humans)

A clinical trial conducted in the Department of Metabolism at Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Taiwan indicated that ganoderma acts to improve:
(a) postprandial (after meals) blood glucose. The majority of Type 2 diabetic patients are able to control their fasting blood glucose after taking western medicines, but postprandial blood glucose is often difficult to control.
(b) life quality of diabetic patients.

In conclusion, ganoderma has been proven by scientific research as effective both in prevention and as a supplementary treatment as it can lower our blood glucose level and maintain our insulin levels. Continuous high dose administration of over 3-month period is recommended to see truly effective results.

Unique Ingredients and Benefits of Lactoberry Probiotics

Sunday 9 October 2011

Probiotics are the friendly bacteria residing in our gastrointestinal (GI) tract. They give immense benefits to us ranging from helping to subdue the allergic symptoms of some people, prevent constipation, improve our immune system to preventing colorectal cancer. This is because they improve the microbial balance in our intestines and promote the healthy growth of our GI flora.

Shuang Hor's bio-tech product called Lactoberry is a formulation comprising specially selected strains of good probiotics (mainly lactic acid bacteria) from Europe together with 3 types of berries. There are at least 2 billion probiotics per sachet of Lactoberry.

Special feature - it is formulated using the unique multi-coated technology to protect the probiotics. As such, the probiotics are able to survive the strongly acidic gastric and bile juice in our stomach and our body heat. This makes Lactoberry high in quality and stands out from many probiotics products in the market.

Lactoberry probiotics have a long shelf life, as the coatings are food for them. This guarantees the intactness and viability of these probiotics, so that they can be carried all the way to our GI tract alive and able to perform their jobs.

Main Ingredients and Benefits of Lactoberry

Bifidobacterium Lactis (L-form)
- Improves the acidity in the GI tract, thereby curbing the proliferation of harmful bacteria.
- Encourages digestion and absorption of dairy products.
- Breaks down fibre and difficult-to-digest oligosaccharides.

Bifidobacterium Longum (L-form)
- Prevents constipation and diarrhea.
- Produces the B-group vitamins and other enzymes that aid in digestion (dissolves, digests and absorbs nutrients).
- Prevents diarrhea caused by antibiotics and medicines.
- Resists infections and adjusts irregularities in our GI system.
- Reduces the risk of cancer.
- Maintains the flora balance of friendly colonies in our GI tract because they multiply very fast.

Isomalt
- A sugar substitute safe for consumption even by diabetics.
- Prevents constipation as it excites the GI activities to further soften our stools.
- Encourages the faster and greater growth of Bifidobacterium to improve the well-being of our GI tract.

Cranberry Powder
- The anthocyanidin found in cranberry can prevent E.Coli from adhering onto our urinary tract, hence warding off urinary tract infections caused by E.Coli. 80% to 90% of urinary tract infections are attributed to E.Coli.

Raspberry Powder
- Prevents constipation as it increases the content of fibre, thereby adding bulk to our stools.

Blueberry Powder
- Removes free radicals, hence is a natural anti-aging food supplement. It is able to maintain the youthfulness of our GI tract cells.
- Promotes elimination of our metabolic wastes.

Who Needs Lactoberry?

In a word - everybody!
  • Pregnant ladies - it gives a stronger immune system to babies, hence reducing the chance of them getting allergic reactions when they grow up.
  • Babies who are not breastfed, to help them digest food better and boost up their immune system.
  • Adults with or without illness.
  • People who encounter daily stress.
  • Patients after medical treatment, as it helps reduce the side effects of medication.

Recommended Consumption of Lactoberry Probiotics

Advisable to consume daily as these friendly bacteria do not stay for long in our GI tract, hence they need to be replenished every day to ensure our GI tract environment is always filled with good probiotics.
Consume after each meal.
Do not mix with hot water or carbonated drinks as they will destroy the probiotics.

I take it everyday. It's my constant companion everywhere I travel.

Heart Disease - The Malaysian Experience

    Friday 7 October 2011

Heart disease is still the No. 1 killer in Malaysia, and has been for over 30 years.

Risk factors for heart disease (atherosclerotic) include:
    - increasing age
    - smoking
    - high blood pressure, high cholesterol level and diabetes
    - obesity
    - sedentary lifestyle
    - stress

Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) treats 8,000 new heart patients annually. Since its inception in 1992, IJN has performed 13,961 closed heart surgeries, 33,850 open heart surgeries and 114,025 invasive cardiology procedures. The average age of a Malaysian patient admitted with acute coronary syndrome is 59 years old (compared to 66 years old globally).

Since 1999, cardiovascular disease accounts for about 25% deaths among women in Malaysia. This is 2.5 times that of deaths due to all cancers combined.

The main symptom of coronary heart disease and heart attack is chest pain or discomfort (usually central or left side of the chest) that may radiate to the jaw or inner left arm. Women, diabetics and the elderly may have atypical symptoms, including:
    - Difficulty in breathing
    - Unexplained sweating, nausea, vomiting, fatigue and epigastric discomfort

A heart attack (myocardial infarction) occurs if the flow of oxygen-rich blood to a section of the heart muscle suddenly becomes blocked. If blood flow isn't restored quickly, that section of heart muscle begins to die.

Mr Uebara Kioshi of Kinki University reported that taking Lingzhi / Ganoderma can reduce the serious symptoms of heart attack. Lingzhi can also improve the conditions of insomnia and infarction (tissue death caused by a lack of oxygen) in cardiac patients. In fact, taking Lingzhi together with other drugs can give better results, which is evident in Mr Uebara Kioshi's clinical experiments with patients who were seriously ill. It is noted that taking lingzhi on a long-term basis can prevent the onset of such diseases.

How I Attain Beautiful and Glowing Skin

    Wednesday 5 October 2011

Our skin is like a mirror that reflects our body's internal health. If our internal organs are diseased, even the best skin-care products will not give us beautiful skin. This is because unhealthy internal organs will affect the skin's ability in absorbing nutrients, reduces the rate of our metabolism and eventually resulting in the loss of our skin's elasticity and radiance.

With this in mind, I have tried and tested 2 products for over 2 years. Much to my pleasure, I have received numerous positive comments about my glowing, radiant complexion (which I feel is quite an achievement with each tick of the clock).

The first product is Jia Hor Soya ProteinEvery single cell in our body needs protein to perform optimally. In particular, protein plays a key role in the skin's metabolic activities, as well as the cell and tissue repair mechanism. Hence it is important to replenish our skin with quality protein to help slow down its aging process.

Jia Hor Soya Protein is the purest form of plant-based protein extracted from soybean and is reputed to be the best of all plant-based proteins. Each sachet provides an amount of protein equivalent to that of an egg or a glass of full-cream milk, but minus the fat and cholesterol. Its unique formulation can give our skin all of these:
    • Restores the moisture content in the skin and softens dehydrated skin.
    • Helps improve skin problems like eczema, dry elbows, scaly skin etc.
    • Helps reduce excessive fats in the blood vessels and soften the fatty deposits in the skin, especially around the eye area.
    • Delays premature aging of the skin.
For more information on the functions and benefits of Jia Hor Soya Protein, please take a look at this article.

The second product is Yung Kien Pollen. Natural bee pollen has been consumed as a nutritional food for more than 2,000 years. It is universally recognized to be very rich in more than 200 types of vitamins (the B group vitamins in Yung Kien Pollen are many times more than those found in other pollen products), minerals, amino acids and active enzymes (which helps to increase the digestion and absorption of nutrients).

Here are some of the conditions that Yung Kien Pollen can address to maintain our physical beauty:
    • Dull complexion. When ladies diet excessively, they tend to have pale faces and dull complexion which are susceptible to wrinkles and pigmentation spots. The rutin and iron in pollen are capable of increasing the number of red blood cells, making our face look radiant, soft and moist.
    • Dermatitis. Pollen is therapeutic against many types of inflammation of the skin. In particular, it can rapidly heal allergic dermatitis common among children.
    • Dandruff, allergies to cosmetics and rough lips are skin problems caused by deficiencies of riboflavin, vitamin B6 and pyridoxin. These people will normally suffer from nervousness, insomnia, constipation and degeneration of the liver functions, all of which can be improved through the consumption of pollen.
    • Grey hair. Pollen contains sulphur, a natural substance that is essential for reducing the formation of grey hair and promoting healthy hair growth.
    • Brown spots, pigmentation, freckles and wrinkles. Pollen helps promote skin renewal by enabling the skin to efficiently get the oxygen supply and nutrients from other organs, thereby delaying the premature aging of the skin.

Causes and Symptoms of Gastric Ulcer - What is the Solution?

    Monday 3 October 2011

A peptic ulcer is erosion in the lining of the stomach or the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). If the peptic ulcer is located in the stomach, it is called a gastric ulcer.

Normally, the lining of the stomach and small intestines are protected against the corrosive acids produced in our stomach by a natural mucus defense barrier. If this protective lining stops working correctly, and breaks down, it results in inflammation (gastritis) or an ulcer.

    What Causes Gastric Ulcers?

The most common cause is infection of the stomach by a bacteria called Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori). Once infected, the infection usually stays with the person for the rest of his life, unless it's treated.  Doctors think H.pylori may be spread through unclean food or water, or by mouth-to-mouth contact such as kissing.

In many people, H.pylori doesn't cause any problem and they just live harmlessly in the lining of the stomach and duodenum. However, in some people this bacterium causes an inflammation in the lining of the stomach or duodenum. This causes the defence mucus barrier to be disrupted (and in some cases the amount of acid to be increased) which allows the acid to cause inflammation and ulcers.

Use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is the second most common cause of peptic ulcers. NSAIDs include aspirin, ibuprofen, diclofenac and naproxen which are used to treat arthritis and other inflammatory conditions in our body. But not everyone who takes NSAIDs gets a peptic ulcer. Ulcers caused by NSAIDs are more often found in people who:
    • are age 60 or older
    • are female
    • have taken NSAIDs for a long time
    • have had an ulcer before

Other causes of peptic ulcers are rare. One rare cause is Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
. Persons with this disease have a tumor in the pancreas that releases high levels of a hormone, which causes an increase in stomach acid.

Stress or spicy food do not cause peptic ulcers, but like alcohol and smoking, they can make ulcer symptoms worse.
What are the Symptoms of Gastric Ulcers?

Burning pain is the most common symptom. The pain is caused by the ulcer and aggravated by stomach acid coming in contact with the ulcerated area. The pain typically may:
    - Be felt anywhere from your navel up to your breastbone
    - Be worse when your stomach is empty
    - Flare up at night
    - Often be temporarily relieved by eating certain foods that buffer stomach acid or by taking acid-reducing medication
    - Disappear and then return for a few days or weeks

Less often, ulcers may cause severe signs or symptoms such as:
    - The vomiting of blood - which may appear red or black
    - Dark blood in stools or stools that are black or tarry
    - Nausea or vomiting
    - Unexplained weight loss
    - Appetite changes - feeling of fullness, or hunger 1 to 3 hours after a meal
    - Fatigue

Can Antacids or Milk Help Gastric Ulcers Heal?

Not really. While antacids may make ulcer pain go away for awhile, they won't kill the H.pylori bacteria. Likewise, doctors now know that while milk may make ulcers feel better briefly, it also increases stomach acid. Too much stomach acid makes ulcers worse.

How Do I Prevent Gastric Ulcer?

Tips to prevent ulcers caused by H.pylori infection include:
    - Wash your hands after using the bathroom and before eating
    - Eat properly prepared food
    - Drink water from a clean, safe source

Tips to prevent ulcers caused by NSAIDs include:
    - stopping NSAIDs, if possible
    - take NSAIDs with a meal
    - use a lower dose of NSAIDs
    - consult a doctor about medicines to protect your stomach and duodenum while taking NSAIDs or switch to a medicine that won't cause ulcers
