This article is sourced and translated from Ganoderma Magazine (Issue 88). It is a report of a scientific study concluding that the combined therapy of Lingzhi triterpenoids and Gefitinib (sold under the brand name Iressa) improves lung cancer and reduces toxicity.

Lung cancer ranks among the most common primary cancer worldwide and is a leading cause of deaths amongst men and second amongst women. 

There are 2 types of lung cancer:

(i) Small cell lung cancer 

(ii) Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Advances in medical discoveries and technologies have improved the therapeutic methods for lung cancer. Gefitinib (trade name: Iressa) is a targeted drug commonly used to treat late-stage metastasis NSCLC and other cancer, like breast cancer. However, after 10 to 16 months of therapy, patients normally develop resistance to the drug thereby frustrating the treatment process.

Therefore, seizing the effective curative period of Gefitinib is crucial to the control of the metastatic cancer cells. At the same time, reducing the side effects of the drugs would enable the patients to be in a better state to fight the illness and reverse the situation. A joint study by the Dept of Oncology, Yantai Hospital of TCM and School of Medicine, Tibet University, found that the combination of Lingzhi triterpenoid and Gefitinib therapy increases efficacy and reduces toxicity. The study, which was headed by Wei Liu, is titled Ganoderma Triterpenoids attenuate tumour angiogenesis in lung cancer tumour-bearing nude mice, and was published in Pharmaceutical Biology in 2020.

The Experiment

Human lung cancer cells (A549) were cultured and then injected into immune-deficient mice (BALB/c). When the tumor grew to around 6-8 mm in diameter, the mice were randomly divided into 4 groups and administered for 14 days in the following manner:

(i) Saline group (control) - intragastric injection with saline daily.

(ii) GLT group - intragastric injection with Lingzhi triterpenoids (1g/kg daily).

(iii) GEF group - intraperitoneal injection with gefitinib (15mg/kg daily).

(iv) GLT + GEF group - combination of (ii) and (iii).

The mice were sacrificed and analysed on the 15th day.

The Results

It was found that the tumor volume of GLT, GEF and GLT+GEF groups were significantly lower than the Saline (Control) group. The inhibition rates of the tumors were GLT 37%, GEF 43% and GLT+GEF 52%. This suggested that although GLT and GEF may inhibit the rate of tumor growth individually, the combined effect is higher. The inhibition was due to the accelerated apoptosis of cancer cells and at the same time inhibiting tumor angiogenesis.

What is Angiogenesis?

Angiogenesis is the process through which new blood vessels grow from existing blood vessels. In order to survive, tumors need to continuously grow new blood vessels to link to existing blood vessels for oxygen and nutrients. This also explains how cancer cells tend to spread (metastasize) to the surrounding tissues and other parts of the body. Therefore, the density of micro-vessels (microvascular) in the tumor tissues will be key to the continuous growth of tumors.

The study made a histological (immunohistochemical) analysis of the tumor tissues of the various group. Quantifying the analysis showed that GLT and GEF groups had lower microvascular density (MVD) than the control group, indicating inhibition of tumor angiogenesis. However, the efficacy was much better when GLT was combined with GEF.

The Side Effects

The mice were weighed on the 1st, 8th and 15th day of the study. The results showed, after the 8th day, the weight of:

- The GEF group dropped significantly.

- The GLT group was stable.

- The GLT+GEF group maintained closer to that of normal healthy mice.

This indicated that the combined therapy of GLT+GEF reduces the side effects of GEF as weight is normally an indicator of well being.

In their observation of the mice, the study found that:

- The GEF group showed signs of agitation and drowsiness, reduced physical activity, decreased feeding and dull skin colour. This could be due to the effects of administrating GEF.

- The GLT+GEF group showed no obvious agitation and drowsiness, accessed water and food without difficulty, and exhibited improved skin color compared to the GEF group.

The results indicated that GLT played a role in alleviating the effects caused by GEF.

Conclusion

The study showed that Lingzhi triterpenoids do not affect the efficacy of Gefitinib but enhanced it.

Note: The study did not dwell into the details of the Lingzhi triterpenoids being used and what was the effective content. The dosage of 1g/kg used in the study was high, but one should note that the study is for a short duration and the researchers would like to know the results within a short span of time. A reasonable dosage is necessary for Lingzhi to take effect in this kind of situation

In July 2022, Shuang Hor launched the most cutting-edge product of the series, YKC, which is designed for cancer diseases. 

This article focuses on the technical proof of how YKC complements conventional cancer treatments and how YKC protects the brain neurons.

Background - Process Flow of Basic Lingzhi

Prior to the launch of Target Lingzhi, Shuang Hor has in its stable a series of products called Basic Lingzhi, which are produced using Lingzhi fruit bodies. The fruit bodies are harvested and then put through these processes in the factory:

Process Flow of Target Lingzhi

Now, Target Lingzhi is even more advanced, as compared to Basic Lingzhi.

Target Lingzhi is also produced using Lingzhi fruit bodies; but the breakthrough of the process is the addition of another component done using a technique called mycelium fermentation. This gives Target Lingzhi a higher concentration and purification of Ganoderic Acid. 

In the past, only Polysaccharide could be extracted from mycelium. It is only with this fermentation technique that Shuang Hor is now able to extract a high concentration of Ganoderic Acid (a sub-constituent of Triterpenoid).

So, the processes in the factory are slightly different:

- Fruit body plus mycelium fermentation

- Drying - Extraction - Concentration

- Separation and Purification

- Rapid vacuum freeze-drying - Packaging.

In other words, Shuang Hor is able to produce this high efficacy product to be used as supplementary treatment for cancer due to:

(a) the technique of doing mycelium fermentation.

(b) the technology of obtaining high quantity of anti-cancer substances through a concentration and purification process to get Ganoderic acid T, S and Ganodermic acid S. If you refer to technical papers in PubMed, you will know these components are very important in cancer treatments.

What is the Difference in the quantity of Ganoderic Acid in Basic Lingzhi as compared to YKC?

(a) Basic Lingzhi products contain about 1% Ganoderic Acid T + 99% other active components.

(b) YKC contains 95-98% Ganoderic Acid T + up to 5% other active components.

In other words, 

(i) The high concentration and purification process results in YKC having higher quantity of active constituents targeted for cancer treatment.

(ii) Cancer patients only need to consume a smaller dose but achieve greater efficacy and better results.

Functions of YKC

1. YKC is used for cancer treatment:

> Effective against all kinds of cancer.

> Taken together with chemo treatments to ease the side effects.

2. YKC modulates and balances brain neurons which helps people to have better sleep.

3. YKC is effective for brain diseases. This is achievable because the ganoderic acid have very small molecular structure which can pass through the Blood Brain Barrier (BBB), into the brain tissues.

What is Blood Brain Barrier (BBB)?

Our body can be easily infected by bacteria or virus. But because of the importance of our brain, there is a special system called BBB that shields the brain from harmful substances in the blood. Thus, the bacteria and virus are filtered by BBB from affecting the brain cells. The is a very good function, but unfortunately, it also prevents drugs from entering the brain. That's why certain chemo treatments are not effective to treat brain cancer.

The good news is, as the molecules of YKC's ganoderic acid are very small, they are able to pass through the BBB and have a good effect on brain diseases.

How Cancer Starts, Grows and Spreads

Cancer cells are mutation of normal body cells. After mutation, our body can't control them anymore. They multiply haphazardly, up to the stage where they affect our major organs, form tumours and kill us.

Stage 1 - The growths are generally less than 1 cm.
Stage 2 - The growths are still localised. Doctors may not be able to detect them.
Stage 3 - The growths are more widespread.
Stage 4 - The cancer cells have already spread. Chemo may not be the best solution because the cancer cells have spread all over the body.

How Does Chemo Work

This article talks about the application of Shuang Hor products in addressing different kinds of diseases related to 3 main systems in our body - Immune system, Nervous system and Circulatory system.


1. Immune System 
- allergy, cancer, SLE, AIDs

(a) Immune-Regulatory Effect

Lingzhi has the ability to suppress over-active immune cells (which refers to T and B cells). The T and B cells start to act irregularly when the body is constantly under a lot of stress. They may randomly attack your platelets or blood vessels (causing stroke).

There's no medicine to treat auto-immune problems completely. Doctors can only control using steroid. No doubt steroids can suppress immunity, but there are a lot of side effects. And if the level of T and B cells are constantly low, it increases the risk of cancer.

Our body's most powerful anti-cancer cells are NKC and phagocytes. They patrol our body and swallow the cancer cells.

Young people have thousands of cancer cells in their body. These cells are unable to form into tumour because they are eaten by the NKC and phagocytes, which are active and functioning well. Those who succumb to cancer have low levels of NKC and phagocytes.

Some symptoms of poor immunity and thus face higher risks of cancer:
- White spots on the tongue or lining of mouth.
- Mouth ulcers that will not heal.
- Hardly have fever.

Old people have tens of thousands of cancer cells. One of the ways the body protects itself is to group all cancer cells together to form a tumour.
If size of tumour is less than 1 cm, it is undetectable.
If size of tumour is 3-4 cm, it can be detected. By then, it may be at stage 3, especially for colon cancer.

How Lingzhi works

For auto-immunity problems, Lingzhi suppresses the activity of T and B cells. At the same time, it boosts up the activity of NKC and phagocytes. YK2 works more effectively for those with auto-immune problem due to the higher content of triterpenoids.

Take at least 20 YK1 or 3 YK2 within an hour to suppress the activity of T cells.
If the auto-immunity problem is very severe, take the said dose 3-4 times / day.

(b) Anti-tumour Activity

Our WBC count start to deteriorate as we grow older. There is no medicine in the market that can boost up WBC. However, YK1 has the certification that it can do so.

YK1 has the ability to activate the vitality of WBC and that's how it achieves anti-tumour ability. When the WBC kill the enemies (by engulfing and swallowing them), they also die at the same time. If you have sufficient and strong WBC, they can quickly eliminate the pathogens.

This explains why some people feel feverish after taking Lingzhi. People who don't get fever could mean their WBC are not working. Because one way to destroy the virus is by increasing the body temperature. Hence fever is a good sign as it means that the body is fighting against the invaders. Such people recover quickly from their illnesses. Relying on panadols and aspirins are not good solutions in the long-term because the WBC would forget how to work.

How to take Lingzhi

Stage 4 cancer = 2 boxes YK2/day for a higher chance of survival + 10-20 sachets Pollen + JH Soya (for patients who have no appetite or cannot eat).
Stage 3 cancer = 1-2 boxes YK2/day. Take for 3-4 months, many a times the cancer cells will disappear.
Stage 2 cancer = 1 box YK2 or 10 capsules YK2 + 10 capsules YK1 (budget constraint).

A suggested ratio is 1 YK2 to match with 1 sachet YK Pollen.

(c) Reduce Side Effects of Chemo

Experienced doctors will examine a patient to check if they are strong enough to undergo chemo. Patients feel very low in energy after chemo. There are many things they cannot eat.

Chemo patients and those who are exposed to a lot of radiation (e.g. using handphones excessively) should take more YK Pollen, as it has anti-radiation properties. A lot of cancer are caused by radiation, which creates free radicals in the body, which attack the stability of our body cells and cause massive cells death. YK Pollen can protect the cells from the attacks of free radicals.


2. Nervous System
- migraine, epilepsy, sleep disorder, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer

Such diseases are closely related to the brain. Our cells are in one of these 4 stages - healthy, dead, sick and ageing. Our body has a mechanism called Apoptosis. If this apoptosis process is working well, it has the ability to eliminate the cancerous, abnormal cells and regenerate new good cells. If we abuse our body through unhealthy lifestyle, sleeping late and having a lot of stress, this apoptosis mechanism will malfunction and kill its own good cells, including brain cells.

As the brain controls the nervous system, when we lose a lot of brain cells, we also start to lose control of our bodily functions. Some problems include memory loss, stiffness of joints, loss of speech and movement, endometriosis (the body does not eliminate the abnormal cells growing outside the uterus wall when apoptosis mechanism malfunctions) and PCOS.

How Lingzhi works

Lingzhi can maintain the balance and homeostasis of the apoptosis. Lingzhi can prevent the occurrence of diseases.

(a) Lingzhi has calming and relaxing effect on nervous system
When the body is in a calm and relaxed state, the apoptosis function would be more normal.

(b) Improve the condition of Alzheimer disease
There's no drug to treat this disease at the moment. They can only relieve the symptoms.

3. Circulatory System
- HBP, LBP, stroke, cardiac infarction (heart attack), arteriosclerosis (thickening and hardening of walls of artery)

Lingzhi has the ability to clear blockages, as well as regulate HBP and LBP. Some people found that 2 capsules Lingzhi + CEO Coffee work wonderfully on these circulatory problems.

Circulatory problems can also be caused by auto-immunity problem. The malfunctioning macrophage immune cells can trigger the over-growth of endothelial cells, leading to blockages of arteries.

We can say that the lungs has the first contact with the external environment. It is the first doorway for pathogens to enter our body because as we breath in, the air goes straight to the lungs.

Common diseases related to respiratory system:

(a) Asthma, where the airways narrow and swell, making breathing difficult, and trigger coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. Common asthma attack triggers include inhaling smoke, cold air, GERD and stress. It's a type of auto-immune disorder where the Th2 becomes hyperactive.

(b) Pneumonia, which is lung inflammation caused by bacterial or viral infection. The air sacs in the lungs (alveoli) are filled with fluid or pus. X-rays show affected area as white spots (called pulmonary infiltrates).

Pulmonary edema occurs when alveoli fill up with excess fluid (often caused by congestive heart failure).

(c) Bronchitis, which is inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes, caused by viral or bacterial infection, or breathing in things that irritate the lungs.

When you experience breathing difficulty, deep breathing exercise help. Especially when you travel to cold countries, you may experience constrictions to your lungs if you are not used to the temperature change. The inhalation of such cold air may cause your WBC activity (immune system) to suddenly drop (as they function optimally at 37'C). Hence if there's germs in the air, you can easily get infected.

A suggestion for pneumonia cases:

(i) Take at least 15 YK1 or 4 YK2, open up the capsules, pour the powder into warm water and sip slowly. Let the Lingzhi powder stick on the oesophagus.
After 2-3 minutes, drink down the residual from the cup.

(ii) Calmly sit down and take deep breaths for 10 mins.

(iii) If still not able to breath well, put 3 Lactoberry into the throat without drinking any water.
After 3-5 mins, drink room temp water.

(iv) Heat therapy - use the hairdryer to blow at the meridian points between nipples and just below the neck for 5-10 mins. It raises your body temp back to 37'C, and your immune system is able to perform again.

Testimony:
Ms J had severe pounding headache when she visited Kunming because the weather was too cold. She put 2-3 YK1 (after removing capsules) under her tongue. Within 5 mins, she vomited and felt relief from her headache.

A suggestion for bronchitis cases:
It's better to take YK2 because many a times, it could be due to autoimmune system disorder. The high content of triterpenoid of YK2 is better (at least 4 YK2), unless you swallow at least 20 YK1, where the triterpenoid level would then be sufficient.

TCM Perspective

The colon and lung meridian points are inter-related. If you experience constipation continuously for 3-5 days and the quality of your stools is poor, this indicates there is a drop in the health of your respiratory system. This is because the meridian points of large intestines and lungs are linked.

Other Symptoms of unhealthy respiratory system:
- phlegm, throat irritation, itchy throat, runny nose
- negative emotion (sadness)
- difficulty perspiring
- rough skin condition
- blisters all over body.

Colon meridian point: outer side of index finger.
Lung meridian point: outer side of thumb.
Meeting point is between between these 2 fingers on the back of the hand and further up on the wrist.
People with weak lungs will feel sharp pain when these points are massaged. There may even be appearance of water blisters.

Solutions

For people with lung problem, allergy and asthma, taking Lactoberry helps as it improves the quality of the bacteria in the intestines, and eventually improves quality of lungs. When the digestive system health improves, your bowel movement is smoother and the quality of your breathing also improves.

Take care of your diet - reduce the consumption of spicy food and take more white colour food to nourish the lungs (white fungus, white lily bulb, barley, almond powder drink). Take pollen in capsule form, rather than granular form.

Take care of your emotions.

Why do some  people wake up with runny nose and sneezing in the morning?

- Aircond is too cold.
- Aircond filter is dirty.
- Bedroom has a lot of allergens and dust.
- Bedsheet has a lot of dust mites.

Quick fix: Slice a big red onion in half and leave it on a plate in the room. However, it's only temporary fix and doesn't address the root cause of the problem. This is because onions can kill bacteria.

Testimony:
Two children suffer from severe asthma. After taking Lingzhi and Pollen, the healing reaction is their cough becomes worse. One coughed out an excess amount of phlegm; the other was sent to hospital to draw out the phlegm. After that, they don't have the attacks anymore. In other words, do not panic, Lingzhi and Pollen are safe, but the consumers need to have faith and patience to go through the episode.

Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is one of the top 10 causes of death. It doesn't happen overnight. It is discovered that 20-30 years prior to being diagnosed with lung cancer, these people had dry cough. They would see the doctor, take cough syrup, the symptoms disappear. When the cough recurs 2-3 months later, they repeated the cycle of seeing doctor. This could continue for 20-30 years. Suddenly they have a severe bout of cough and when they go for checkup, the doctor would pronounce them as stage 4 lung cancer patient.

When particles stick to the wall of the alveoli, the exchange of air can't function properly, and that's why people experience dry cough. Another way of looking at it is that when one experiences dry cough, it's a sign that the immune system is working, and is trying to cough out the toxins from body. But if the lungs is weak, nothing would come out. Cough syrup contains steroids and suppress the activities of immune cells, making it appear that the irritations have gone. However, toxins are actually reabsorbed back into the body. Accumulation of toxins over a period of time increases the severity.

To manufacture Basic Lingzhi, the entire fruiting body is used, and the processes it goes through are Drying, Coarse crushing, Extraction, Concentration and Quick drying/freezing, before the final product is obtained.

For Target Lingzhi, the raw material is Liquid Fermentation Mycelium (not fruiting body). It is put through the processes of Drying, Extraction (specific high efficiency ingredient drying), Separation, Purification and Quick drying/freezing to arrive at the final product. This process increases the effectiveness of Lingzhi, where the higher concentration and purity level of ganoderic acid will give results that are more effective and quicker.

Uses of Target Lingzhi v. Basic Lingzhi

Basic Lingzhi - as the whole fruit body is used, the effective components are many but in smaller quantity. It is better for general use, especially for people who don't know exactly which body organ is unwell or what diseases they may have. In other words, it's for general health maintenance, protection and prevention purpose. The duration will be longer and dosage will be higher.
Eg. liver cancer patients need to take 1 bottle/day to start seeing results.

Target Lingzhi - if a specific health problem is identified, then it's better to take Target Lingzhi as the speed of recovery is faster (quickly solves the problem) and improvement effect is much better. In other words, because of its specific functions, Target Lingzhi is a better option as it achieves faster and more effective results in a shorter span of time.

Special Features of Target Lingzhi

1. Contains key ingredients with higher concentration and higher purity.
Hence it's faster to see effective results.

Case 1 - Stage 2 Pancreatic Cancer

A 64 year old lady, Singaporean, was diagnosed with Stage 2 Pancreatic Cancer in Nov 2018. She went through an operation to remove her pancreas, gallbladder and part of her intestine. She was feeling weak and also had acites (build-up of fluid) in the liver.

She took 10 capsules YK Ganoderma2 daily together with chemotherapy. She went through a stable chemo cycle as she could maintain stable white blood cell count when undergoing treatment. She encountered minimum nausea side effects.

As per CT Scan report on 25 Feb 2019 (about 3 months later), there was no more new cancer cells reported. There was no reoccurrence and spreading of cancer cells.

Her cancer marker CEA reading reduced from the initial 20.8 to 7.57 and CA19.8 from 1,935 to 124. This is a very good result as pancreatic cancer is not easy to treat, and 5 years remission rate is very low.


Case 2 - Stage 4 Nose Cancer

Testimony: Leukemia Cancer

Ms Y's father was diagnosed with leukaemia 2 years ago, at a very serious stage. He underwent 4 sessions of chemo treatment. He also had blood transfusion twice a week, every week. Testimony: Stage 3 Nose Cancer

Ms A found out from her ex-customer that his boss is suffering from Stage 3 nose cancer. He was first diagnosed on 2014.
