This article talks about how Lingzhi helps reduce cerebral ischemic injury (CII), as extracted from page 11 of the presentation by Ms Yu-Chi Cheng in 2018. A study was published in 2014 in the online Journal of Ethnopharmacology by Zhou, et al.. In the study, Ganoderma lucidum is shown to reduce the impact of ischemic brain damage by reducing brain cell apoptosis and reducing inflammatory response.
An inflammatory response occurs when tissues are injured by bacteria, trauma, toxins, heat, or any other cause. The damaged cells release chemicals including histamine and prostaglandins. These chemicals cause blood vessels to leak fluid into the tissues, causing swelling.
The conclusion of the study states, "Our findings indicate that Ganoderma Lucidum Polysaccharides protects against cerebral ischemic injury by inhibiting apoptosis by downregulating caspase-3 activation and modulating Bcl-2 / Bax ratio."
Let's seek to understand what this finding means:
1. Cerebral ischemic injury causes a condition of insufficient blood flow to the brain. When the brain doesn't have sufficient blood, brain cells will die due to lack of oxygen. Massive death of brain cells can cause stroke.
2. Apoptosis is the death of cells which occurs as a normal and controlled part of an organism's growth or development. In other words, apoptosis is a form of cell death in which a programmed sequence of events leads to the elimination of cells without releasing harmful substances into the surrounding area. Apoptosis plays a crucial role in developing and maintaining the health of the body by eliminating old cells, unnecessary cells, and unhealthy cells.
