Be mindful of your emotions. When you feel anger, count to 10 before you get angry. Because "fire" from your anger will burn all your merits. Meaning uncontrolled anger will eliminate all the good deeds you have done in the past.

Don't do unto others what you don't want done unto yourself.
Don't lie if you don't want to be lied to.
Be kind if you want kindness from others.

When you don't achieve what you desire, don't be quick to put the blame on others. Reflect on yourself first. What have you done wrongly or didn't do enough of?

Is having materialistic goals good or bad?
It's ok to have Desires / Goals so long as they inspire / challenge you.
If the process of pursuing your goals turns you into a "bad" person, then this particular desire becomes unhealthy and you should drop it.
However, if you give up your goals because you're too lazy to pursue them, then you're doing it for the wrong reason.

Don't feel upset or defeated just because something doesn't manifest the way you want it to be. What you want may not necessarily be what is best for you.

If you harm others for personal benefit - you will eventually bring misfortune upon yourself.

If you neglect the elderly and pamper the young - you will cause misfortune in your family.

If the wise ones are unwilling to teach; and the young ones are unwilling to learn - it will result in a downfall in society.

If you stay away from the capable people but engage only with people who flatter you - you will cause misfortune to your country.

If you banish people with ethics and talent; and put into power people with no ethics - there will be a worldwide misfortune.
