What Everyone Should Know About Allergic Reactions Caused by Hives/Urticaria and the Best Way to Avoid It

Wednesday 19 June 2013

Hives / Urticaria look like pale red bumps and patches on your skin. They are itchy and can cause burning sensations. They can appear anywhere on your body, including your tongue, ears and lips. They can last for days or weeks.

What Causes Hives?

Hives / Urticaria are caused by allergic reactions that your body has to certain foods, dyes, chemicals, insect bites, medicines or infections. These substances are called allergens. When you are allergic to any of these, your body releases histamine. Histamine causes your blood plasma to leak out of the small blood vessels on your skin, leading to these raised bumps.

Most common foods that can cause hives are:
  • Nuts (including almonds and peanuts)
  • Seafood (fish, prawns)
  • Eggs and milk
  • Wheat
  • Medicines (aspirin, NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines)).
Types of Hives

1. Acute urticaria
Last for less than 6 weeks. Usually caused by foods, medicines and insect bites.

2. Chronic urticaria
Last for more than 6 weeks. Caused by autoimmune diseases, infections and cancer.

3. Physical urticaria
Caused by direct stimulation of your skin, e.g. extreme heat or cold, sun exposure, sweating, certain types of clothes material, exercise etc.

4. Dermatographism
Occur after you firmly stroke or scratch your skin.

Can Hives be Treated?

Yes. If you know what allergen has caused it, you can avoid them:
  • If you can't eat nuts, avoid all foods with nuts in them.
  • If you can't wear certain jewellery or watches because of the nickel in them, then don't wear anything containing nickel.
  • Take antihistamines to combat the histamine that's being released in your skin.
  • Bathe in lukewarm water. Use gentle soap that's hypoallergenic.
  • Apply a cool wet compress to the affected area.
  • Keep cool at all times.
