What Everybody Should Know About the Role of Hormones in Our Body

Tuesday 5 February 2013

Hormones are not something that only applies to women. Do you know they play many important functions that affect all aspects of our physical and mental health? Hormone imbalance can cause many negative health conditions.

Some of our major hormones are..

1. Estrogen
Function: relates to reproduction and sexual activities.
During menopause, the levels of estrogen decrease. However, external synthetic hormones (called xenoestrogens) can cause havoc when they are absorbed into our body. They trick our body into thinking they are normal estrogens. We are exposed to xenoestrogens when we use pesticides, detergents, petroleum products, plastic products and cosmetics. We may end up with excess estrogens.

2. Progesterone
A woman's progesterone levels drop by up to 90% when she nears menopause, compared to 40% estrogen drop. This causes a marked difference between estrogen and progesterone levels, leading to estrogen dominance, which is what causes menopausal symptoms.

Estrogen dominance is thought to increase the risk of endometriosis, uterine fibroids, polycystic ovaries, breast cancer, uterine cancer and thyroid imbalances. It can also affect our brain function, emotional balance, energy levels, libido and sleep.

3. Testosterone
It is produced at a much lower level than in men.
Function: maintains sexual desire, muscle and bone strength; reduces risk of heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer's disease.

4. Thyroid
Function: regulates metabolism in our body cells.
Low thyroid level causes fatigue, chills, low libido, dry skin and hair, hair loss, memory loss, irritability, depression and constipation.

Causes of Hormone Imbalance
There are many conditions that cause the production and functions of our hormones to become disrupted, including:

1. External stress
  • Work or personal problems
  • Lack of sleep
  • Traumatic incidents
leading to mental and emotional stress, manifesting as anger, fear, worry, guilt, anxiety and depression.

2. Internal or physiological stress
  • Nutrient deficiencies
  • Dietary imbalances
  • Pain
  • Chronic infections
  • Inflammation
leading to medical symptoms and problems.

How can we reduce these stress factors in our lives?
  • Resolve the problems causing us emotional and mental stress
  • Address nutrient deficiencies
  • Treat chronic infections and pain disorders.
Another vital reason to maintain optimal hormone balance - it is believed that it could delay premature effects of aging

An Easier Solution

We are under stress all the time, due to the types of lifestyle we lead and environmental factors we are exposed to. It is not easy to modify our lifestyle. We have certain habits or indulgences which we know are bad but we still continue to indulge in. We know exercise is crucial but we have many excuses not to incorporate it into our daily routine.
