Liver - How to Take Care of This Silent Workhorse

Sunday 11 September 2011

There is a saying - "A good liver means a colorful life, while a poor liver leaves a life black and white."

Our liver is the largest internal organ in the human body. It performs many, many functions including:-

  • Metabolism of food
  • Conversion and storage of food
  • Transportation of medicine
  • Detoxification and excretion of toxic substances ingested or inhaled
  • Protein synthesis
  • Involvement in food digestion (conversion of hemoglobin into bilirubin to aid digestion)

Damage to liver cells may result in liver inflammation, hepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis or cancer.

The 3 main causes of liver disease are:-
  1. viral infection, where the most prevalent are hepatitis B and C (AST/ALT ratio less than 1).
  2. alcoholic damage (AST/ALT ratio more than 2).
  3. chemical damage including ingestion or inhalation of toxic substances.
Generally, a liver that sustains damage shows a higher reading of GPT (ALT) and GOT (AST) enzymes. Normal readings only imply initial normal liver function. For example, more tests are required for serious liver cirrhosis to be detected.

What's the Solution?

Scientific researches have shown that Lingzhi provides “all-round” liver protection because:-
  1. Lingzhi has the effect of reducing hepatic injury/inflammation i.e. protects our liver from diseases (hepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis or cancer).
  2. When injured, lingzhi enhances regeneration of new liver cells (by increasing the quantity of protein in the liver) and repair liver cells so that it can keep on performing its many functions.
  3. Lingzhi arrests virus invasion of liver, assists liver to form antibodies against viruses and kills liver cancer (hepatoma) cells.
