Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to become weak and brittle. It occurs when the creation of new bone can't keep up with the loss of old bone. The risk of osteoporosis is higher in people who are frail, underweight, small in built and post-menopausal women.
Many people think losing bone density and sustaining fractures are simply a natural part of the ageing process, but this is a Myth. Statistics show that 1 in 4 people who fall and fracture the hip will not survive beyond 12 months - which is worse than some cancer diagnoses! Unfortunately, despite its devastating effects, osteoporosis remains under-diagnosed and under-treated.
Factors affecting bone health include:
In osteoporosis, you can fracture the spine without having to fall. So if you bend over to pick up a pot of flowers or your grandchild, you may get back pain. This could be a sign of a fractured spine. It is essential to prevent even the first fracture, because once you have had one fracture, you're likely to experience another. There are medicines that can be tailored to suit all sorts of patients. However, for me, I won't take medicines to prevent osteoporosis.
I would choose Vitaking collagen.
Why? Because it is safe and doesn't have side effects. I have been drinking it consistently for over 15 years for maintenance and protection. However, when I sprained my ankle or twisted my shoulder, I increased the dose to enjoy the curative benefits.

Shuang Hor launched Vitaking in 2007. Driven by a spirit of innovation to continuously improve and deliver better products, Shuang Hor launched Vitaking2 (March 2025 in Malaysia and May 2025 in Singapore), with an upgraded formula. Vitaking2 retains the essence of the original Vitaking, with the inclusion of additional nutrients for enhanced protection.
Role of Collagen and Calcium
As we age, our skin loses its elasticity and radiance, fine lines and wrinkles appear, our bone density decrease. This is due to the slow down in collagen synthesis. Calcium, which is a key component in maintaining bone density, interacts with collagen to keep bones strong and flexible.
If calcium in bones is likened to bricks, collagen acts as the cement that holds them firmly together. Collagen helps retain calcium within the bones and also increases their flexibility and resilience.
Further, collagen is vital for cartilage health, reducing friction between bones during movement.

Knee osteoarthritis is the deterioration of the cartilage in knee joints, leading to pain and difficulty walking. Injections of hyaluronic acid have been prescribed since the 1970s to treat this problem. Hyaluronic acid, a gel-like substance, is injected into the joint aiming to lubricate movement and decrease pain. The treatment is known as viscosupplementation.
A meta-analysis published in The BMJ looked at 169 previous trials that compared the injections to a placebo (no treatment). The researches then whittled that down to 24 large placebo-controlled trials involving nearly 9,000 patients, in what is the largest review of the available data so far.
These are some of the Conclusions:
> Strong conclusive evidence that viscosupplementation is associated with a clinically irrelevant reduction in pain intensity.
> The treatment is associated with a higher incidence of serious adverse events.
> It is not only ineffective compared with a placebo but might also be seriously harmful.
One of the study's authors, Bruno da Costa of the University of Toronto said that for a typical patient, it should be a last resort. Several large-scale, industry-funded studies were carried out that found negative results about the treatment. But those studies were never published, da Costa said. He added this is concerning, and perhaps mainly driven by commercial interests.
What are some countries doing
> France's social security system stopped offering reimbursements for the treatment a few years ago.
> England's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommends against viscosupplementation.
> A quarter of the money that US Medicare spent on viscosupplementation in 2018 went towards treating infections in joints following an injection, one of the most common side effects.

This post shares with you the ingredients and benefits of the 3 main building blocks our body needs - protein, collagen and calcium.
1. Protein
Proteins are essential for the development of our health across all ages. While animal proteins are considered to be the best dietary protein source, there has been a paradigm shift towards plant-based protein around the world. Studies associate it with lower risk of heart disease and obesity. Soy protein has emerged as one of the most popular plant-based options as it is considered as a complete source of essential amino acids.
Jia Hor Soya Protein:
a) Isolated soya protein - can be easily assimilated and utilised by our body.
b) Lecithin - capable of reducing the build-up of body fats. It is especially beneficial for pregnant mothers as it can promote good developmental growth of the foetus's brain functions.
c) Papain (papaya enzyme) & Bromelain (pineapple enzyme) - capable of breaking down large protein molecules to enhance their digestion and assimilation.
2. Collagen
Collagen is a structural protein that forms connective tissues in our body. Hydrolyzed collagen is collagen that has been broken down into smaller chains for easier digestion.
Vitaking is a bio-technology product containing hydrolyzed collagen, lemon verbena and D-Ribose. Lemon verbena is a herb known for its ability to relieve inflammation, and help the functions of our digestive system and liver. The benefits of Vitaking include:
a) Preserve skin radiance and healthy glow, delay and improve the signs of skin aging like wrinkles.
b) Promotes healing and growth of muscle tissues after exercise.
c) Alleviate inflammatory symptoms and relieve arthritic pains caused by physical exertion and movement.
d) Strengthen bone functions, help repair joint cartilage tissues and reduce the stiffness and pain caused by aging joints.
3. Calcium
Our bones are also storage banks for minerals, especially calcium. In the process of bone metabolism, old bone are removed and replaced by new bone tissues every day. Calcium helps to build and maintain bones and it needs vitamin D for better and more effective absorption into the body. Calcium supplements come in handy when we don't get sufficient supply of these 2 important nutrients from our diet.
Jia Hor Calcium Plus Tablets contains:
a) Purely natural concentrate of dairy calcium, which is extracted from cow's milk.
b) Vitamin D3, which is capable of catalysing the assimilation and utilisation of calcium to help preserve the normal density of the bone mass and calcification of the skeletal system.
c) Casein phosphopeptide (CPP) which is readily absorbed by the intestinal tract and minimises the precipitation of calcium in the digestive system to help facilitate the absorption.

Bone fractures in the elderly are almost always caused by weak bones from osteoporosis or a fall. It is common that hip bones are the ones that are fractured. If someone has a hip fracture and wants to be pain-free, he would have to be bed-ridden for 3-6 months. The bone may heal but it could be in a displaced position and he would be unable to walk properly and fall again. Also, staying for prolonged duration in a lying position can cause lung complications, pneumonia, blood clots, bed sores, etc.
For that reason, doctors prefer hip fractures in elderly to be operated on. Unfortunately, surgery has many risks due to their age. Putting them under anaesthesia is also risky. Further, the elderly may be unfit for surgery if they have blocks in the arteries and their cardiovascular risk for hip replacement is very high.
In such cases, doctors can only pump them with painkillers and blood thinners to prevent strokes or deep vein thrombosis. They would likely need nursing care. It is a financial and emotional strain to their family.
Those who can undergo surgery would have to sit up within 3-4 days and undergo chest rehabilitation to enable them to breath well. By day 5, they have to be transferred to a wheelchair. It would be a very painful process during these 3 months.
I have something that can help reduce inflammation and speed up recovery - Vitaking collagen. What is it? Check out this 40-second video..

Osteoporosis is inevitable
Women have a 5 to 1 ratio of suffering fractures, as compared to men. The risk is even higher after menopause as the decline in oestrogen makes the bones thinner. The worst hit areas are the hip joint, end of wrist and spine. Women are advised to build their bone mass to a high level when they are in their 20s to 40s, so that when they reach menopause, the bone mass does not drop to a critical stage.
How can you do that?
Again, I recommend Vitaking. Its main ingredient is Collagen. Click on this article to find out how it functions and why it's a better solution than taking Glucosamine..

Bone renewal is a slow process and has to be combined with proper diet and exercise to work. There's a 40-50% risk of another hip fracture occurring within a year. The anti-osteoporotic drugs take at least 1 year to work. So if your hips are not strong and you are not changing your lifestyle or not doing physiotherapy, then it is going to happen again. Work on building muscles to prevent loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength.

Some ways to prevent falls
> Have a potty in the bedroom for night-time urination.
> Don't get up from lying to standing position too quickly as it will cause a drop in blood pressure, making you dizzy and fall.
> Install a dim floor light or keep the toilet light on.
> Keep the bedroom free from obstacles so you can move unobstructed.
> Get anti-slip floor mats.
> Remember to take your medications.

Sprains and strains have similar symptoms but they affect different tissues in the body.
What are the difference?
Sprain - stretching or tearing of the ligaments (tissues that connect 2 bones). Common joints sprained are ankles, wrists, knees, hips or fingers.
Strain - injury to muscles or tendons (tissues that attach muscles to bones). Mostly occur in lower back and thigh muscles or hamstrings. Sometimes called pulled muscles.
What are the symptoms?
Sprain - pain, swelling, bruising and movement limitations. A "popping"sensation when you injured it.
Strain - pain, tenderness, redness, bruising, limited movement, muscle spasms and weakness.
As the symptoms are similar, the best guide is the location of injury.
Causes
Sprain - walk on uneven or slippery surface, land awkwardly after jumping (eg while playing basketball), during exercise, stopping a fall with your hands. More likely to sprain your joints when you are feeling tired or if you keep using old sports shoes which don't offer adequate protection.
Strain - lift something heavy without taking necessary precautions, repetitive movements eg typing on the keyboard or playing computer games using the mouse, playing contact sports like football and hockey, playing sports with a lot of quick starts, stops and jumps eg basketball, having higher risk of muscles strains in hand grip sports like golfing, straining the elbow in racquet sports like tennis or dart throwing.
Do you need to see a doctor?
Mild sprains - use ice pack several times a day to reduce swelling, elevate and rest the joint.
See a doctor if you cannot bear weight on the affected joint, have pain directly over the bones of that joint (it may mean a fracture) or have numbness in any part of that area.

Another Solution
I have sprained my ankles twice from falling down steps when walking and also while looking at my phone (I know, I know, I should have known better). My ankles were horribly swollen and bruised and I could barely put any weight on them.
Instead of seeing an orthopaedic doctor or a sinseh or applying any cream, this is what I did.
I took Vitaking collagen, averaging 5-6 sachets on day 1, slowly reducing to 4 sachets a day then 2 sachets a day. Amazingly, I was able to go shopping on day 3. And went for my holidays in Australia after 10 days.
I have also woken up with a strained neck and shoulder which made even small movements extremely painful. A sudden turn would send a sharp searing pain which made me wince. No doctors. Similar formula. Same good results.
