Dr Hseu Ruey-Shyang is a Professor from the Agrochemistry Faculty at Taiwan National University. He gave a talk in Singapore on the topic of "Lingzhi and Modern Medical Science". He imparted his personal insight of what he has gained in the past 20 years through reading Lingzhi's historical articles, his participation in various Lingzhi researches, and several conclusions that he has compiled throughout the years.
I have transcripted his talk into Six Parts, which I will share with you over the next few weeks.
Dr Hseu began cultivating Lingzhi at home since 1981. He completed his doctorate thesis in 1990 and was the first Chinese to present a thesis on Lingzhi. During that process, he was exposed to different perceptions about Lingzhi and continue to learn about it anew. In 1995, he began his Lingzhi genetic research, which is also commonly known as DNA analysis. After 1995, he confined his Lingzhi research from the past macroscopic view to a microscopic view and analysis at the molecular level.
The Chinese's understanding of Lingzhi dates back to 2,000 years ago. Nonetheless, Lingzhi has a well-known scientific name, which is Ganoderma Lucidum. Strictly speaking, this scientific name made its first appearance in 1889 A.D. In other words, it was about 100 years ago when Westerners gave Lingzhi its scientific name in Latin. Looking at this time gap, the Chinese had learned about Lingzhi more than a thousand years ahead of Westerners.
If you want to find out whether a fungus is a species of Lingzhi or not, there are a few parts that we must look at. Firstly, observe its cross-section, which is very different from other ordinary mushrooms. It is formed by countless cylindrical tubes, which are closely tied up with one another, constituting what we call tubule layer.
