Gout is a type of arthritis where small crystals form inside and around the joints, causing sudden attacks of severe pain and swelling. The condition is more common in men over 30 and women after menopause.
A study examined whether there's a link between gout flares and heart attacks / strokes. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, examined electronic health records of more than 62,000 patients with gout in England. 10,475 of these patients had a heart-related problem not long after.
Patients who suffered a heart attack / stroke were:
> Almost 2 times as likely to have had a gout flare-up in the 60 days prior.
> 1.5 times more likely to have had a gout flare-up in the 61-120 days before.
The results show that gout patients who have a flare-up have a higher risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke.
Thus, people with recurrent gout flares should consider treatments to remove urate crystal deposits. Allopurinol drugs is used to lower high uric acid level but educate yourself on the multiple side effects. Patients would also need to be concurrently treated with Colchicine for the first few months, as Allopurinol may trigger gout flares in the short term.
