Sinusitis is an inflammation of the lining of the sinuses. It's also referred to as rhinosinusitis, because inflammation of the sinuses (pockets of air in the cavities of the face) nearly always occurs simultaneously with inflammation of the nose (rhinitis).
To complicate matters, viral or bacterial infections can set in, worsening existing symptoms. People with sinusitis often experience difficulty breathing, facial congestion, pain, headaches, ear aches and problems with sleep.
As the nose and lungs belong to "one airway", inflammatory processes occurring in the nose, if left untreated, can eventually affect the lungs.
Treatment Options
The majority of treatment options available target the relief of allergy symptoms. Medications such a antihistamines and nasal steroid sprays are commonly used. Leukotriene inhibitors such as montelukast are also popular, but patients should be aware of adverse reactions (including neuropsychiatric side effects) linked to the use of montelukast.
Although drug treatment are helpful in managing allergies, these drugs are not able to prevent an allergic reaction from happening, nor are they able to address the root cause of an oversensitive immune system.
