Bits & Bites #241 - Testimonies: Eyes and General Health Maintenance

Wednesday, 21 May 2025

Below I share 2 testimonies related to eyes and 2 more testimonies on how to take Shuang Hor products for general health maintenance. Some people experience healing reactions but don't worry, it is temporary and indicates that you're on the road back to better health.

Testimony: Burst Blood Vessel in the Eye

Madam M from Kota Kinabalu suffered from a burst blood vessel in her eye, resulting in bleeding (as can be seen from the photo above). She takes a mix of 1 sachet YK I-Plus + 1 sachet JH Soya Protein + 1 sachet Lactoberry + 1 sachet Pollen Granular, all mixed into a Shake and drunk with water. She consumes this shake 3 times a day, before meals.
A very good recovery can be observed after only 3 days of consumption.

-------------------------------------

Testimony: Eye cataract

Madam L from Keningau, Sabah suffers from eye cataract. She often feels pain, stinging sensation, glare, and red eyes. Doctor suggested operation but she didn't want to. She started to take Yung Kien Eye (tablet form) since May 2020 but due to the pandemic, her supply was cut off when stocks ran out. She continued when YK I-Plus was launched in Malaysia.

Dosage: 1 sachet in the morning + 1 in the evening, mixed with a bit of water and drunk immediately.
The condition of her eyes continues to improve. She doesn't feel pain, glare, stinging sensation nor has red eyes. Her cataract is also improving.

--------------------------------------

Testimony: General Health Maintenance - Healing Reactions

Ms L, 42, is a business woman juggling a busy work life with 3 young children. She doesn't have major health problem. She goes for yoga and regular exercise. But over the years, she has constipation problem, difficulty sleeping due to stress and feeling very tired towards early evening. She started on a low dose of 1 capsule Yung Kien Ganoderma + 2 capsules Yung Kien Pollen each time, twice a day, for maintenance.

After just 1 day, she had a healing reaction of slight reddish discharge which increased to bleeding with slight cramps after 2 days, but light. Over the next few days, her temper was very bad, her body felt heaty, she felt very, very tired and she could sleep well without sleeping pills.

After 1 week, she had more frequent urination despite drinking similar quantity of water, sometimes getting up twice a night to go to toilet.

After 10 days, she increased her dose to 2 Yung Kien Ganoderma + 4 Yung Kien Pollen each time, twice a day. Her healing reaction was eczema in the face near the ear and cheeks area 3 days later. It was very itchy. She believes it's a cleansing reaction of past similar condition and hence continued with the dosage.

----------------------------------------

Testimony: General Health Maintenance for the Elderly

Ms J's father is 83 and has been taking Shuang Hor products since he was 75. He stays in Melaka. When Ms J took Lingzhi, she found that it helped put her blood pressure under control so she introduced it to her father. He has been on hypertension medication for several years. He maintains his dosage of 2 capsules Yung Kien Lingzhi + 5 capsules Yung Kien Pollen until today. Within the year, when he went for his medical checkup, the doctor cut his hypertension medication due to the improvement of his blood pressure.

Last year, her father's weight dropped from 55kg to 48kg. His waist measurement dropped from 31 to 28 inches. He looked skinny. He stepped up on his consumption of Jia Hor Soya Protein from 1 to 3 sachets a day. Within 3 months, he put on about 3kg and 1.5 inches. It was a good progress because the dose of the other products remained the same.

He took just 1 Lactoberry a day. After 3-4 months, he did not have intolerance when taking curry laksa - his IBS has improved.

In early June 2019, he had palpitation issue that he was quite worried about. He sounded lethargic. He increased his Lingzhi to 6 capsules/day. He felt okay after just 2 days of this dose.

Even though he took low dosage, he can maintain his quality of life (without resorting to too much medicine) and mobility. Ms J opines that as long as we take consistently everyday, regardless of dosage, we will see result.

The Blue-Light Blues

Sunday, 19 June 2022

Recent research indicates that many adults spend an average of more than 12 hours a day in front of our smartphones, computers and TV. Over-exposure to blue light emitted from our digital devices have negative effects on our health, such as:

(a) Sleep cycle disruption

Our sleep routine is at risk of being disrupted when we are over-exposed to blue light at night. Blue light shifts our circadian cycles. It also suppresses melatonin (a hormone that regulates our sleep cycle), making it difficult for us to fall asleep.

(b) Dry eyes and strain

Blue light tires out the retinas due to the rapidly changing glare that forces our eyes to focus harder.

Symptoms include:

  • Burning or stinging sensation, eye irritation, redness and sensitivity to light.
  • Headaches, blurred vision, neck and shoulder pain.
  • Computer vision syndrome or digital eye strain, with symptoms like headaches, blurred vision, back pain, fatigue, double vision or dizziness.
Here are some simple Preventive Methods:
  • Blink more often as it helps to moisturise and refresh your eyes.
  • Use artificial tears to lubricate your eyes.
  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule i.e. look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds every 20 minutes.
  • Cut down on glare by adjusting the lighting around you and the brightness of your screen.
  • Use blue light screen filters.
  • Wear blue light glasses.
  • Cut down on screen time.
An ophthalmologist Dr Leow Sue Ngein recommends consuming a good form of antioxidant, which prevents inflammation from exposure to blue light, as one way to maintain healthy eyes.

A study published in May 2020 in the journal Marine Drugs showed that a natural red carotenoid found in the micro algae Haematococcus pluvialis called astaxanthin has "the advantage to directly address the main pathogenic factors underlying ocular diseases, such as cumulative oxidative stress and chronic subclinical inflammation."

On top of that, Astaxanthin also has these benefits:
  • Good safety profile with no adverse events being reported in any clinical studies.
  • Improves accommodative function of the eyes by controlling the contractility of the ciliary muscles.
  • Alleviates eye fatigue by reducing cellular inflammation that emerges because of persistent eye stress and contraction of ciliary muscles.
  • Improves capillary blood flow in the retina, which helps improve the eyes' internal balance, nutrition, oxygenation and waste removal.
  • Strong antioxidant potency, being (i) 6,000 times stronger than vitamin C, (ii) 4.9 times stronger than vitamin A (beta carotene) and (iii) 2.6 times stronger than lutein.
  • Can suppress 5 inflammatory signalling pathways in the body, and thus, is able to protect against all inflammation in the eyes.

Which eye supplement should you take?

I highly recommend Yung Kien I Plus. It's an excellent health food to protect your eyesight because not only does it contain Astaxanthin, it also has Lutein, Zeaxanthin, blackcurrant, bilberry and wolf berry extracts.

Lutein and Zeaxanthin are the carotenoids naturally occurring in macular area, also known as macular pigment. They are mostly found in yellow and green vegetables. The blue light can penetrate deep into the back of the eyes. But the eyes can protect itself by filtering blue light using macular pigment. Supplementing with Lutein and Zeaxanthin is just like applying a layer of sunscreen to provide a natural defence to protect the sensitive photo-receptors of macular region from the potential hazards of blue light.

Lutein and Zeaxanthin are also powerful natural antioxidants that help resist the damage of free radicals to the eyes, delay the ageing of eyes and prevent diseases related to eyes. Recent studies have confirmed that they have a positive effect on the Macular Pigment Optical Density. MPOD is related to visual acuity. Long-term supplementation with Lutein and Zeaxanthin is able to increase and maintain the macular pigment, which is beneficial to prevent the symptoms of macular degeneration such blurred, deformed or decreased central vision.

Our body does not naturally produce Lutein and Zeaxanthin so it's important to obtain them from diet or supplements. Yung Kien I Plus features a rich content of Lutein which is extracted from marigold flowers in its purest form FloraGLO through the most advanced patented technology of the 21st century.

Given the fact that Lutein can readily become oxidised in its normal exposure, and the quality tends to be affected during normal manufacturing process, FloraGLO Lutein in Yung Kien I Plus is extracted in the crystallised form and produced through precision process, which is resistant to oxidative damage. This explains why, compared to lutein from normal source, it exhibits a much higher absorption rate by the human body.

Free radicals, the biggest culprit in the ageing of eyes, are generated when blue light emitted from the UV rays of sunlight and electronic products enter the eyes. YKI contains multiple antioxidants that help protect the eyes from the damage of free radicals, delay the ageing of eyes and prevent eye diseases.

FAQs

Q1. Which group of consumers would YKI be suitable for?
  • People who are long-term users of computers and smartphones.
  • People with long-term exposure under the sun.
  • Patients of 3-Highs (high cholesterol, high blood pressure and high blood sugar).
  • People with high stress level.
  • People who drive a lot.
  • People who often strain their eyes for specific jobs.

  • Regular fast food consumers, those with sweet-tooth and those with low intake of vegetables and fruits.
Consumption of YKI benefits everyone including children, elderly, pregnant women and vegetarians.

Q2. Why does supplementing with Lutein and Zeaxanthin help protect the eyes?

Lutein and Zeaxanthin are 2 important components in the macula of the retina. Macula is an oval yellowish area near the centre of the retina (at the back of the eyeball). However, these components cannot be produced by the human body. Further, intake from a regular diet is still insufficient for eye health maintenance. Therefore it is recommended to supplement them.

Q3. Will consuming YKI maintain or improve myopia (short-sightedness)?

Exclusive: Yung Kien I Plus for Healthy and Beautiful Eyes

Sunday, 11 October 2020

Our eyes are the windows to the world. Through them, we witness life's greatest moments and create memories that stay with us for a lifetime. But often, we take our eyes for granted. In today's world, our eyes are more vulnerable to damage. The increasing numbers of digital devices in our lives are exposing us to more screen time than ever before. Long stretches of screen time can cause the eyes to get dry or irritated easily, leading to vision problems.

According to the world report on vision by WHO, at least 2.2 billion people have vision impairment or blindness of which over 1 billion cases could have been prevented or have yet to be addressed. In fact, up to 80% of vision impairment or blindness in adults are preventable or treatable. Therefore, we need to protect our eyes starting from now, to maintain healthy vision throughout our lives.

Fight Blue Light Naturally

Blue light is the harmful light that we are exposed to everyday in the forms of sunlight, artificial light and digital electronic devices including smartphones, TVs, tablets and computers. Blue light has short wave length and is very high in energy. It is not easily filtered by our eyes and over-exposure can negatively impact our vision, causing digital eyestrain. Therefore, as the uses of these devices increase, the risk to our eyes increases as well.

This high energy blue light can penetrate deep into the back of our eyes and induce photochemical stress. This may damage the light sensitive cells in the retina, increase the risk of macular degeneration which may lead to permanent vision loss. Besides that, long term exposure to blue light also put pressure on the lens, causing the lens to become cloudy, leading to dry eye symptoms.

Roles of Free Radicals and Antioxidants

Free radicals are the natural by-products of chemical reactions in the body called oxidation. With thousands of unbalanced electrons, these electrons can cause damage to our cells. The tiny spot in the retina called macula is highly susceptible to oxidative stress because it consumes high levels of oxygen that leads to the production of high levels of free radicals.

These free radicals are very unstable and can cause damage to the cells, nerves and capillaries of the eyes. Long-term accumulation of free radicals can lead to progressive vision problems and macula degeneration.

Therefore, keeping free radicals in balance is extremely critical in the prevention of macula degeneration. Antioxidants are the natural substances whose job is to clean up these free radical wastes in the cells (like fibre which cleans up the waste products in the intestines). They are able to neutralise the destructive properties of free radicals that are harmful to the body and the eyes.

Ingredients in Yung Kien I Plus

While it is impossible to completely avoid the exposure to blue light and oxidative stress, there are ways to protect your eyes and maintain healthy vision for a lifetime. Regardless of age, supplementing with nutrients beneficial to eyes starting from today can help to protect your eyes for a lifetime.

Yung Kien I Plus is a perfect health food to protect the eyesight. It is rich in these 6 major ingredients:

  • Lutein
  • Zeaxanthin
  • Blackcurrant polyphenol
  • Bilberry extracts
  • Astaxanthin
  • Wolfberry extracts.

Bits & Bites #208 - Health: TCM: Kidney (and Western Medical Tests) and Liver (and Eye Colour)

Sunday, 5 August 2018

Please email askfuiping@gmail.com if you want to buy Shuang Hor products for your health.

Atelier
Main Functions of Kidney

1. Filter the blood and remove wastes such as BUN and creatinine (refer below).
Dirty blood that goes into the kidney is cleansed by nephrons in the kidney. The fresh blood then goes back into circulation. The dialysis machines perform this function when kidneys of patients no longer have the ability to filter their blood.

2. Control body's fluid balance and regulate balance of electrolytes:

One of the symptoms of deteriorating kidney function is fluid retention, mostly in the lower part of the body. There are 2 kinds of water retention:
(i) In the area below abdomen.
(ii) Abnormal accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity (ascites). The most common cause is cirrhosis of the liver.

Minerals in our body carry electric charges. The balance of electrolytes are vital for normal functioning of the human body. Diarrhoea can cause an imbalance in the electrolytes.

(a) Calcium : Phosphorus should be in the ratio of 2 : 1.
If the presence of calcium is too high, it will cause calcification and hardening of arteries, leading to strokes or heart attacks.
If calcium depletes too much, you may get osteoporosis and your blood pressure may shoot up.

(b) Natrium (Sodium) : Potassium ratio
From TCM point of view, when kidney is damaged, one craves for salty food. By the same token, people who like to eat salty food will damage their kidneys eventually. People with high blood pressure like to eat salty food. When the level of potassium is higher, it can eliminate excessive sodium and thus keep the blood pressure down.

(c) pH value is maintained at 7.35 - 7.45.

3. Produce renin enzyme and regulate blood pressure. When you are under stress, renin level increases, and blood pressure increases.

4. Produce erythropoietin (EPO) hormones which stimulate the production of red blood cells by the bone marrow. People with anaemia have low EPO level.

---------------------------------

Causes of Kidney Damage

a) Drugs/medication, including usage of viagra.

b) Cold drinks. Drinking tap water (even though it is filtered) contributes to weakening the kidney (because it is yin in nature and depletes the kidney essence). It is better to drink boiled water. From TCM point of view, depletion of kidney essence can be seen from symptoms such as hair loss, hearing problem, tinnitus, teeth start to loosen and unable to stand for long.

c) Too much sex.

d) Salty food.

e) High blood pressure is one of the most common causes of kidney failure. That's because it can damage the arteries leading into the kidney and the glomeruli within the kidneys. Damage to either results in the kidney being unable to effectively filter waste from the blood. As a result, dangerous levels of fluids and wastes can accumulate, ultimately requiring dialysis or kidney transplant.

f) Infection or inflammation and auto-immune diseases e.g. SLE.

g) Obstruction of urinary tract due to enlarged prostate or kidney stones.

-----------------------------------

Symptoms of Weakening Kidney

Purplish coloured tongue.

Blood pressure reading is high, but the person feels normal. This is not due to hypertension disease. Rather, when the body is cold, the blood vessels constrict, hence blood pressure shoots up. ACE is the enzyme that controls our blood pressure. When you are cold, adrenal glands release ACE, which alerts your body to preserve the warmth by constricting the blood vessels, which increases blood pressure.

Needle-like pain at the sole of the feet.

- Body feels very cold or very hot. Under TCM theory, kidney is the body organ that adjusts the body temperature. When the kidney weakens, the body temperature can fluctuate out of control and you will suddenly feel too hot alternating with too cold.

- Reduced amount of urine despite drinking a lot of water, due to water retention problem - causing swelling of the legs, ankles and feet.

- Unexplained shortness of breath.

- Excessive drowsiness or fatigue.

- Persistent nausea, confusion, pain or pressure in the chest.

- Darker skin tone on the face.

- Limbs are weak - cannot stand for long.

---------------------------------

Western Medical Tests on kidney usually focus on checking:

(i) The kidney's ability to filter urea nitrogen (Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) test).

When we eat protein, it will be digested into amino acid, and converted to other usable materials by the liver. A process converts nitrogen from amino acid into ammonia, which is converted by the liver into urea (a chemical waste product). The urea travels from the liver to kidney to be passed out through urine. A healthy kidney can filter the urea and remove it from the blood and pass out through urine.

A BUN test normal range is 7 - 20 mg/dL (2.5 - 7.1 mmol/L). A person has kidney problem if his BUN reading is high. It means his kidney can no longer filter the waste of protein. You would notice that when the doctor finds you have kidney problem, he will stop you from taking too much protein.

But you cannot not take protein as 30% of your body is made up of protein, which is the basic building material to produce blood cells, hormones etc. Consider taking Jia Hor Soya Protein, as it gives no burden to your kidney.

(ii) Creatinine is a waste product from protein in your diet and normal breakdown of muscles in your body. People with kidney disease will have a higher level of creatinine in the blood. If creatinine is not eliminated, you will start to feel muscle aches. Normal range is 0.7 - 1.3 mg/dL (men) and 0.6 - 1.1 mg.dL (women).

(iii) GFR (glomerular filtration rate) test estimates how well the kidney is filtering blood (through glomerulus) to remove wastes and extra water. If the filtration capability is good, your kidney function is considered good. A GFR over 60 mL/min/1.73m2 is adequate. Normal GFR is above 90 and GFR below15 indicates kidney failure.

Consumption of too much drugs can cause GFR reading to fall very fast as the kidney has more burden to remove a lot of wastes such as the binders, fillers and colourings that form the drugs.

(iv) Uric acid test. People with weak kidney should not eat too much high uric acid food such as anchovies, peanuts, beans and internal organs. Normal range is 3.4-7 mg/dL for men and 2.4-6 mg/dL for women.

------------------------------------

Your health from your Eyes:

a) Clear demarkation between the black and white of eye - liver is healthy.

b) Bluish rim around black of eye - arteriosclerosis (hardening of arteries).

c) Lines all along iris - stress.

d) Yellowish layer on top of black of eye - high cholesterol. Feel heat on top of scalp when under the sun. Tend to doze off easily.

e) Blood stains on white of eye - liver heat and cannot sleep well.

f) Yellowish on white of eye - liver not healthy as cannot metabolise bilirubin. Also indication of fatty liver problem (liver is losing its function to eliminate oil).

--------------------------------------

The liver plays a critical role in metabolising uric acid, calcium etc before the kidney can pass them out through urine. If the functions of either the kidney or liver deteriorate and they have problem processing these chemicals, the uric acid will build up inside the body causing gout whereas calcium build-up in the blood will cause stones. Hence it is critical to maintain the detox ability of the liver and kidney.

----------------------------------------

If the liver is damaged, it is easier for Lingzhi to help repair the damage and generate new liver cells. Yung Kien Ganoderma has been accredited with liver protection ability by the Taiwan's Ministry of Health.
However, if the kidney is damaged, it is more difficult to rescue. It is harder for Lingzhi to help regrow new kidney cells.

Complications from Diabetes - Artherosclerosis, Eyes and Kidney Disease

Wednesday, 19 March 2014

Email askfuiping@gmail.com to purchase Lingzhi / Ganoderma for prevention or supplementary treatment of diabetes.

Diabetes is a disease that affects you for long term (chronic). The high sugar in your blood stream (hyperglycemia) is extremely dangerous to your body's tissues and organs and will lead to all sorts of complications, broadly classified as:-

1) Macrovascular complications
- involve larger arteries in the body, such as the heart, brain and limb vessels.

When you have uncontrolled high blood sugar, hardening of the arteries (artherosclerosis) is hastened. It causes major blood vessel walls to be inflamed and thicken over time, forming plaques. The opening of the vessel walls becomes narrower, making it very difficult for blood to pass through the affected blood vessel.

If any of these plaques rupture, they can travel downstream and further lodge themselves in another part of a narrowed vessel. The sudden blockage of blood flow can cause strokes or heart attacks. Diabetic patients have a 150-400% higher risk of stroke than a normal person.

2) Microvascular complications
- involve smaller blood vessels, such as the eyes, nerves and kidneys.

(a) There are several ways your eyes can be affected in diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy, which is divided into:
  • Background retinopathy - small bleeding patches appear on your retina, which can be seen as "dots". Later, protein exudates start to appear, resulting in swelling of your retina. All this can cause blurring of vision.
  • Proliferative retinopathy - small new blood vessels start to form on your retina, which can tear and lead to bleeding. Blindness can then occur.
(b) Diabetic nephropathy (kidney disease) is the leading cause of kidney failure in Malaysia. Diabetic kidney disease can range from just having mild protein in your urine to end stage kidney failure needing lifelong dialysis or a kidney transplant.

Some symptoms include:
  • losing sensation in your hands and feet
  • getting ulcers easily on your feet.

8 Common Eye Problems and How Lingzhi Helps

Wednesday, 12 February 2014

Email me at askfuiping@gmail.com to buy Lingzhi / Ganoderma and other supplementary products to protect your Eyes.

As the saying goes, "The eyes are the windows to the soul." If you look deep within, you can see whether the person is telling the truth or not. We are all extremely reliant on our sense of sight for our pleasure (like seeing delicious food and beautiful sceneries) and also to save our lives (like walking around a pothole or running away from an attacking bee). So it's crucial to know what are the common eye problems and how to take care of your eyes.

Common Eye Problems

1. Presbyopia
It's a farsightedness caused by loss of elasticity of the lens of your eyes.
It occurs due to ageing.

2. Cataract
A condition where your lens lost its ability and becomes increasingly cloudy, thicken and harden, resulting in blurred vision.
It is caused by ageing, genetics, eye injury, long-term steroid consumption, diabetes and thyroid problems.

3. Glaucoma
It is a condition of increased pressure within the eyeball, causing gradual loss of sight.
It is caused by genetics, diabetes, consumption of steroid, myopia, eye injury or if you're a smoker.

4. Dry Eyes
This is caused by lack of sufficient lubrication and moisture on the surface of your eyes. It happens when you're exposed to constant irritants e.g. driving a car that has been parked under the sun, or being in aircon room or in front of the computer over prolonged periods.
It is caused by ageing, side effects of medicines such as antihistamines, antidepressants, blood pressure pills, Parkinson medicines and birth control pills or living in environment that is dry, dusty or has a windy climate.

5. Diabetic Retinopathy (Floaters)
It is a complication of diabetes that affects your eyes.
It is caused by damage to the blood vessels of the retina.
90% of floaters (as seen in the image above) is caused by ageing of the eye.

6. Age Related Macular Degeneration
It's a chronic eye disease that causes vision loss in the centre of your field of vision.
It is caused by ageing, genetics or frequent exposure to sunlight and blue light.

7. Eye Stroke
It occurs when blockages within your arteries cause decreased or distorted vision. It happens when your retina or optic nerves are cut off from nutrients or oxygen that are flowing through your blood.
It may be caused by high blood pressure or heart problems.

8. Iritis
It is an inflammation that affects your iris.
It is caused by genetic factor, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, injury to the eyes or certain medications like antibiotics.

How Lingzhi Helps Your Eye Problems

1. Lingzhi is able to prevent Eye Stroke and address Diabetic Retinopathy problems because it can:

a) regulate your blood glucose level.
b) reduce your blood pressure and cholesterol level.
c) improve your blood circulation.
d) increase the elasticity of your blood vessels.

Diabetes is a chronic condition that you may have to carry through the rest of your life. Lingzhi cannot cure diabetes, but long-term consumption of the right dosage of Yung Kien Ganoderma, together with Jia Hor Fiber, addresses these conditions which are usually associated with diabetes:

(i) you will not go blind.
(ii) you will not have gangrene problem.
(iii) you will not have to undergo kidney dialysis.
(iv) you will not have heart and liver problems.

2. Iritis problem - Lingzhi can regulate your immune system, including T cells, B cells, natural killer cells and phagocytes.

3. Cataract - there is scientific evidence to show that Lingzhi helps delay the clouding of your eyes.

4. Lingzhi can cleanse the blockage on the micro-blood vessels, promote faster recovery process and repair injured cells. Hence it can repair your optic nerves and lens, especially if consumed together with Vitaking and Jia Hor Soya Protein.

5. Lingzhi can remove free radicals, even better if taken together with Luchun Lingzhi Tea. It slows down your ageing process and thus delays the onset of eye problems.

Why Diabetes Cause Blindness and Safe Remedies to Prevent Diabetes

Thursday, 1 November 2012

Diabetes occurs when:-

(i) Type 1 - our body is unable to produce insulin (hormone that stimulates our cells to take in and store glucose from our bloodstream)

(ii) Type 2 - our body's cells start to fail to respond to insulin.

Can diabetes result in blindness? Yes. There are 2 ways.

1. Diabetic macular edema

It's the more common condition amongst the working population. High levels of blood glucose in our body can eventually result in the weakening of our blood vessel walls. The weakened blood vessel walls cause leakage of proteins and fluids into our eye, particularly the macula. This causes the macula to swell up, resulting in blurred vision.

Diabetic macular edema can develop without symptoms.

2. Proliferative diabetic retinopathy

The small blood vessels become leaky and there is lack of oxygen to our eye (hypoxia). This hypoxia leads to increased VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor), which is a critical factor that leads to the growth of new blood vessels. Unfortunately, these new blood vessels are quite fragile, and can become leaky easily, thus triggering the whole cycle again. This process eventually leads to loss of vision.

Diabetic retinopathy can develop without symptoms. However, it usually occurs in patients already on dialysis. Even though there are treatments available, most Malaysians get it detected too late, inevitably resulting in blindness.

Over 60% of patients with Type 2 diabetes have some degree of diabetic retinopathy 20 years later. The only way to delay it is to control your diet and take medications.

Some ways to control your dietary habit include:

1) Carbohydrate intake should be limited to small amounts in each meal.  This will even out the blood sugar levels throughout the day. So, don't skip a meal then gorge on buffet later.

2) Fibre intake should be increased, as it will help slow down the absorption of sugars during metabolism. Click on this link to discover How to Choose a Quality Dietary Fibre.

What is Glaucoma - Risk Factors and Types

Saturday, 25 August 2012

Glaucoma is a condition afflicting the optic nerve, which is the "wires" that connect our eyes with our brain. When glaucoma sets in, it means that the optic nerves have been damaged, which may lead to blindness. This condition is irreversible. The World Health Organization estimates that 4.5 million persons globally are blind due to glaucoma, and this number is expected to rise to 11.2 million by 2020.

Unfortunately, there is a very low awareness of what is glaucoma and that it leads to blindness. It was found that 70% of Malaysians surveyed do not know what glaucoma is. As a result, many patients only see their eye doctors or specialists when their vision is already significantly impaired, making it too late to save the sight that has been lost.

Risk Factors of Glaucoma
  • Age
  • Existing short-sightedness (myopia) or long-sightedness (hyperopia)
  • History of steroid use eg. self-medication by purchasing steroid eyedrops from pharmacies
  • Diabetes. Please click on this link to find out how to prevent diabetes.
  • Hereditary factor.

Types of Glaucoma

1) Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), which is the loss in peripheral vision of one eye.
The pressure within the eye is called intraocular pressure (IOP). Pressure can build up due to blockage in the drainage channels (trabecular meshwork) that drains the aqueous fluid within the eye. If the aqueous fluid is blocked from flowing out of the eye, the IOP will increase and cause damage to the optic nerve. It occurs gradually that it may be years before a person notices any change to his field of vision.

2) Angle-closure glaucoma, where the iris (colored part of the eye) obstructs the drainage angle of the aqueous fluid. It occurs suddenly and is an emergency situation. Symptoms include:
  • Splitting headache
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Seeing halos or rings around lights
  • Intense pain in the affected eye.
It is more common in women, among Asians, and older people.

3) Normal tension glaucoma, where the optic nerve still ends up damaged even though there is nothing abnormal with the IOP readings. This form of glaucoma is still not well understood.

4) Congenital open-angle glaucoma, which afflicts newly-borns.
