Is Your Smartphone Ageing Your Eyes? How to Spot the Signs

Saturday, 1 August 2026

One of the surest signs of ageing is when you need reading glasses. It usually starts when you're in your 40s, when you need to hold the menu further or squint while reading. This condition is called presbyopia - where as we age, the eye's crystalline lens harden, making it more difficult to adapt to near vision.

Quick Self-Check for Presbyopia

> Focus on the smallest text on a banknote.

> Look up at a distant object.

> Immediately look back at the small text on the banknote.

If your eyes cannot refocus within 1 second, it might be a sign of presbyopia.

Symptoms of presbyopia

  • Eye fatigue when reading at close distance.
  • Blurred vision when reading small print.
  • Needing stronger light when reading or working at close distances.
  • Having to extend your arm to see reading material clearly.
  • Feeling nauseous, dizzy, or experiencing headaches.
  • Unconsciously squinting often.
Beware of early onset presbyopia

Due to changes in modern lifestyles, presbyopia can occur as early as in one's 30s. It mainly affects 2 types of people:

(i) Hyperopic individuals
People with hyperopia (farsightedness, where they can see distant objects clearer) of 100 to 200 degrees are more likely to be affected.

(ii) Those who use their eyes excessively
People who habitually stare at computers and smartphones up close for extended periods of time.
